Detailed Lesson Plan in Respiratory System

Grade 9- Einstein ( 1st Quarter)

I. At the end of 60 minutes, the students are expected to achieve 75% level of
proficiency of the following:
1. explain how respiratory system works;
2. describe the parts and functions of respiratory system where air passes during
inhalation and exhalation;
3. demonstrate appreciation on the importance of taking good care of the lungs; and
4. use a model to demonstrate inhalation and exhalation

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Human Respiratory System

B. References: Science 9 learner’s module, pp 19-22.

Science Spectrum Textbook. pp. 25-30
Today and Tomorrow: Biology for Non-Science Majors. (n.d.).pp 236-237

C. Materials: Word Puzzle, Projector, reading materials or handouts, Illustration of the

Respiratory System, lung model, torsomodel, pen marker, manila paper

D. Teaching Methods: Inductive Method, KWL Chart, Group Work Strategy (The Path of
Air
in my Body, How do I Breathe

E. Science Concept: Respiratory System is a biological system that involves in the

exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between organisms and the
environment. It
consists of seven main parts: nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi,
bronchioles, and alveoli. Air enters through the nasal cavity down to the pharynx
and
to the trachea until it reaches the lungs and it is carried by blood to the different
parts
of the body.

III. Learning Activities

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings Good morning Teacher Jane
Good morning class. None teacher.
3. Checking of Attendance
Is anyone absent today?
4. Setting of Classroom
standards Listen when somebody is talking.

5. Review
What are the 3 major parts p of Heart
Circulatory System? Blood
Very Good! Blood Vessels

What is the fuction of the heart? It pumps the blood throughout the body
Very Good!

What is the fuction of blood? It carries the materials like waste product,
Good! oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.

What is the function of blood It carries the blood throughout the body

What are the 3 kinds of blood Veins, arteries and capillaries

vessels?
Very Good! Veins carries
deoxygenated blood, arteries
caries oxygenated blood while
capillaries is a site of gases and
nutrients are exchange.

6. Motivation:
Go to your respective group.
(Give the activity folder to each
group)

Everybody stand up, take a

deep breath..inhale
exhale….inhale exhale…have
a sit
What parts/ organs of our body
responsible during inhaling and
exhaling?

Group Work (Word Puzzle)

Directions:
 Open the folder and get the
white folder inside and 1
manila paper.
 Assemble the word/words
that is related to
parts/organs of our
respiratory system
 Stick the assembled words
on a sheet of manila paper.
 You are given 5 minutes to
do the task.
 Display your outputs on the
board. Say something about
it.
 I will giving a reward to the
group who give all the main
parts of respiratory system.

B. Presentation of the Objectives:

The teacher present the lesson objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students must be
able to:
 explain how respiratory system works; The students read the lesson objectives
 describe the parts and functions of
respiratory system where air passes
during inhalation and exhalation;
 demonstrate appreciation on the
importance of taking good care of the
lungs; and
 use a model to demonstrate inhalation
and exhalation

C. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation (KWL Chart)
 Everybody look at the model Students will tell their idea about the model
of the respiratory system.
What is your idea about it?

Very Good! This is your reward

Activity 1: “I Want to Know

about...”
Directions:
 Fill out the first and second
column of the KWL Chart.
 Write what you know and
what
you wanted to know about
the
topic.
 Leave blank the last column
because you will fill it out
after
the lesson is done.
 You are given 5 minutes to
think and share with your
group.
2. Comparison and Abstraction
- Where do you think the air first
enters the body?
I have a short video clip here
and watch closely to it. Observe
where the air travels inside the
body.

Differentiated Activity: Give the

activity for each group
Group 1: Labeling each part and
giving its functions in the box
corresponding to the part.
Group 2: Write the path of oxygen
from outside of the body to the
blood stream.
Group 3: Bottled Balloons
Group 4: Breathing and exercise
Group 5: Tobacco and the body

 You are given 20 minutes to

finish
the task. Select one from
your
group to share your work
with the class .
 I will giving a reward to the
1st group who finish the
activity

 *Presentation of outputs

*Lecturette

between the organism and environment.

 What are the different parts of The different parts of respiratory system are:
respiratory system? Give its function.  Nose/Mouth - The organ through which the
Good! air enters and is filtered
 Nasal Passages- Serve as channel for
airflow through the nose in which the air is
warmed, cleaned, and moistened.
 Trachea – also called windpipe; a hollow
tube that serves as passageway of air into
the lungs
 Bronchi - also called bronchial tubes; two
branching tubes that connect the trachea
to the lungs
 Bronchioles – very small branches of the
bronchi.
 Alveoli – groups of thousands of tiny air
sacs at the end of the bronchioles.

- What gas is exhaled?  The gas inhaled is oxygen.

- Where does gas exchange The gas exhaled is carbon dioxide

happen?
It happens in the alveoli.
- Why do we need to provide
the body with oxygen?
- The cells of the body need oxygen to break
- How do respiratory system down and to release energy in food.
remove carbon dioxide from
the body?
- During the breathing process, carbon
Generalization dioxide forms a gaseous waste product.
- The air we breathe goes
through the nose, nasal
passages, and then through
trachea or windpipe, which
separates into two branches,
called bronchial tubes or
bronchi, one entering each
lung. The bronchi subdivide
many times inside the lungs,
analogous to the branching
pattern of grapes, finally
becoming hairlike tubes
called bronchioles. In the
last part of the terminal
bronchioles are tiny bubble-
like bunch of structures
called alveoli or airsacs.
- Carbon dioxide on the other
hand is produced from all
parts
of the body and is collected
by
the blood that exits in the
opposite way.

3. Value infusion
- Is respiratory system Yes, Maam

- We should love our body by practicing

staying free from stress and feel happy.

- What do you think will If we will not take care of it, many respiratory

if we will not take care of our cancer, pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis,

Closure Activity
- Let us review the W column
and find out if all queries had
been addressed.
- Do we have some more
clarifications or doubts?
- If none, fill in the third
column
on what have you learned
about the respiratory
system.
- You are given 3 minutes to
write.

IV. Evaluation
Multiple Choice: Read the questions carefully. Choose the letter of the best answer.
Write it on your paper.
1. Which of the following organs is/are responsible for the exchange of gases inside
our body?
a. Ovary b. bones and muscles
b. c. lungs d. alveoli
2. It is where the exchange of gases takes place.
a. trachea b. bronchi
b. c. nasal cavity d. alveoli
