EC 307: COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A fundamental level professional course on electromagnetics and radiating
systemElectronics and Communication Engineering. Students will learn about
EM wave propagation in dielectric and lossy media, theory of transmission
lines, analysis of rectangular and cylindrical waveguides and basic antennas and
radiating systems. This course is a prerequisites for the eighth semester course
on “RF and Microwave engineering”.

COURSE SYLLABUS: LECTURES


EM WAVES:
[12L]
Maxwell’s equations, Boundary conditions, Propagation of
uniform plain waves in perfect dielectric and in lossy
medium, Wave velocity and impedance, Reflection and
refraction.

TRANSMISSION LINES: [08L]


LCR ladder model for transmission lines, The transmission
line equation, Solution for lossless lines, Reflection and
Transmission coefficients at junctions, VSWR,
Introduction to Smith Chart.

WAVEGUIDES: [12L]
Solution of Wave Equations in Rectangular and Cylindrical
waveguides, Modes and their cut offs, Power Transmission
and losses.

ANTENNA AND RADIATION: [10L]

Radiation fundamentals, the half-wave dipole antenna.


Antenna performance parameters, two element array, linear
arrays, multiplication of patterns, antennas for various
applications, Propagation of radio waves (introduction).

EVALUATION METHOD:
Assignments*: -- Problems will be recommended, solutions will be posted.
Quiz test I: 15 %
Midsem:30%
Quiz test II: 15%
Final Exam:40%

*Assignments don’t carry any marks but will be helpful in quizzes and exams.
