BATTERIES
Each DL is powered by an internal rechargeable NiMh battery.
If properly used, the NiMH batteries are rated for at least 500 discharge cycles.
An effect known as the "memory effect", which degrades the readout performances during the
use, may occur if the batteries are left under charge for some days or if they are repeatedly/
partially discharged. In order to prevent this, it is recommended to use exclusively the battery
charger supplied with the DL and to cycle (charge and fully discharge) the batteries at least once
every two/three weeks.
The batteries should be charged only when they are completely discharged and
not before. You could charge it before they are completely discharged only when
you have to use the DL.
Furthermore, if you don’t need to use the DL for an extended period, it is better to store it with the
batteries fully charged.
If you don’t use the DL for a long time, the batteries lose their capacity due to
the auto-discharge. The first time a battery charger is connected, this could
signal “green” also if the batteries are not fully charged. SISGEO suggests to
repeat the charge cycle twice.
Using a good battery, a full battery charge allows a non-stop use of at least 8 hours: this means
that with a full charge it is possible to work on site for more than a day.
BATTERY CHARGER
The supplied battery charger is controlled by a microprocessor which manages a rapid charge in
less than 3 hours.
The input voltage range is universal (90-264 V ).
This battery charger uses a method called “–dv detection”. This method is based on the fact that
the voltage drops over the NiMH cells when the batteries are fully charged. This voltage drop is
detected when the voltage has dropped of a certain percentage from the highest value and the
charge is automatically completed. If this voltage drop does not occur, the battery charger has a
safety timer that allows to configure the end of the charging after a given period of time to avoid
batteries overcharging.
For battery cells which have been idle for a long period of time, the voltage could drop in the first
part of the charge cycle. For this reason, a start-timer is built into the battery charger to prevent
”–dv detection” in the first minutes of the charge cycle.
Don’t take instrument readings with battery charger connected to the DL.
Rev.4 -04.07.2016- 13 | P a g e
Portable Dataloggers User Manual
Don’t use a different type of battery charger. It is necessary to use only the
supplied battery charger (0ECAB12VNMB)
INTERNAL TEMPERATURE
If, for any reason, the internal temperature in the DL is more than 70°C there is a
safety system that disconnects the battery until the temperature decrease under
70°C. So, if after the battery charge the DL doesn’t switch on, wait until the
battery returns within an adequate temperature range.
To start the battery charger, it is necessary to connect the jack cable to the readout. Then, connect
the battery charger to the power supply network.
NOTE: To avoid damages, always insert the jack of the battery charger in the DL
before connecting the battery charger at the power supply network. Likewise,
before disconnecting the battery charger jack from the readout, disconnect the
battery charger from the power supply network.
The LED on the battery charger are yellow before the start of the fast charge. Then the LED
changes to orange.
When the batteries are fully charged the LED is green.
Do not leave the battery charger connected to the DL for more than 24 hours.
If the battery voltage is less than the normal one, the LED indicates "error" by flickering green and
orange light.

Connecting the battery charger to the voltage, the LED becomes orange for the first 5-7 seconds,
then it turns to yellow when the initialisation and the analysis starts. If the battery is connected,
the actual charging starts a few seconds later when the LED changes to orange.
When the battery is charged the LED turns to green in approx. 4 seconds. This is only a signal to
test the service. When –dv has been detected, the start of the top-off charge is indicated with a
green LED with intermittent yellow flashes. The LED is green during trickle charge.

USER INTERFACE
To switch the DL on, press the ON/OFF key while keeping the INFO key pressed.
After a few seconds the DL switches on and on the display is shown a start-up page.
This page displays the type of DL and the version of the firmware. At the bottom of the display the
name of the DL shows up: this is an user assigned name that can be used to distinguish between
different DLs.
It is important to keep the name of different DLs distinct when importing data to
a PC, so that the source of the data can be traced.

EDIT BOXES
An edit box is used to display and edit text; when the user has to enter a number, either an integer
or a number with decimals, the numeric keys and the decimal point are used to directly type the
digits and decimals separator.
The +/- key is used to enter a + or – sign, instead the “e” for the exponent
part.
Just press the +/- key: the DL shows a list of characters. Press the +/- key
repeatedly until the character you wish to insert is selected, then wait until the
list of characters disappears and the selected character is inserted in the edit
box.
When you need to enter a text, you have to press repeatedly the numeric keys, the +/- and the .
keys to enter the desired character.
Press the DEL key to delete the character on the left of the cursor.
If you keep the DEL key pressed for about a second, the content of the edit box is deleted (quick

BUTTONS
Buttons are used to select an action, which frequently means navigating to a new screen. Just
move focus to the desired button and click the ENTER key.
Generally no BACK or ABORT button is on the screen, therefore to return to the previous screen or
to abort the current operation just press the ESC key on the keyboard.
When no button is selected, the ENTER key is normally used to confirm the most obvious
operation: for example when a list is selected, clicking the ENTER key usually brings you to the next
screen with the currently selected item.
LISTS
Lists are used to select one of several items; when a list is selected, you may change the selection
clicking the UP or DOWN keys.
The LEFT key moves to the beginning of the list and the RIGHT key moves to the end.
By clicking ENTER, the current item is selected.
You could delete an item pressing the DEL key when this item is selected, but only if you are in one
of the configuration menus and when a list box is displaying items defined by the user (for example
sites or instruments). The DL requires a confirmation to avoid accidental deleting; this doesn’t
happen if the item has no data inside.

CONFIGURING SITES
DLs have a permanent memory used to store configuration data (such as Instruments and
Multiplexers), as well as acquired data (as Readings).
Despite the memory maximum capacity is remarkable (2GB), DL export and synchronization speed
with the PC depends on the data quantity.
We advise to not charge too much the DL memory and to use it only to save the
DL files.
All data in a DL are divided in sites: the sites are defined by the user but generally
they are named as the physical sites where readings are performed.
To view the sites list, select Configuration in the main menu, then select Sites. The list of sites is
initially empty. To add a new site, make sure that the edit box at the bottom of the screen is active
(you should see a blinking cursor in it) and type the name for the new site, then press ENTER.

CONFIGURING MULTIPLEXER (STANDARD), CHAINS OF DIGITAL INSTRUMENTS, SWITCH PANEL and WORKLISTS
MUTATORI E LISTE DI LAVORO
Before doing the configuration of Multiplexers, Switch Panels and Work Lists (from now on we call
theme Selectors, when the differences are not relevant), you must define the instruments that you
wish to read through these Selectors in the same site in which you wish to add a new Selector. The
single SISGEO digital instruments from a digital chain must NOT be configured. Refer to the
Configuring Instruments chapter for details about configuring instruments.
To configure any of these Selectors (considering Work Lists as a sort of virtual device), select
Configuration and then click the appropriate button for the type of Selector you wish to configure.
The process is very similar for all of them, except that to identify the position on the Selector of a
given instrument, are used different data.
First the DL displays a screen to select the site in which the Selector should be added. Then a list of
Selectors of the chosen type, that have been already defined in the site, is displayed.

After the creation of a new SISGEO digital instruments chain, press ENTER. After having selected a
chain for the current site, the display shows the settings used to read the chain.
The parameters configured here are used from the DL to read the chains of digital instruments,
therefore they have to match exactly those configured on board for the digital instruments. If the
user changes the parameters in this screen, those configured on board in the digital instruments
don’t change. Refer to the documentation supplied from SISGEO in order to know the
configuration for every digital instrument.
Typically, the chain instruments are configured with consecutive RS-485 addresses, starting from
one up to the maximum number of instruments. The maximum number of instruments have to be
inserted in field Max addr (Maximum RS-485 Address).
The DL has a limited power supply to supply digital instruments chains, so it is possible to supply a
limited number of instruments simultaneously. To allow to read a high number of instruments,
those have to be configured in order to turn on the instruments of the chain at different moments
(not simultaneously). This function is managed through two parameters: warming and delay. If the
energy-saving has been configured for the digital chain, check the option Energy saving and fill the
fields warming and delay according to the parameters configured for the digital instruments chain.

When the option “energy saving” is enabled, every digital instrument of the chain will turn on after
a different delay, according to its RS-485 address. During the reading, the datalogger waits for the
best moment before reading the instrument and go through to the next one.
Each digital instrument will be turned off after the reading.
When the option “energy saving” is NOT enabled all the digital instruments of the chain will be
supplied and turned on simultaneously. The digital instruments will be turned off after the reading.
The (theoretical) maximum number of digital instruments that can be read in sequence from the
DL (option energy saving enabled) is 254 (addresses RS485 from 1 to 254).

Connect the flying cable (1MIL connector and alligator clips) to the DL.
Never force a connector into the port. Check for possible obstructions in the
port. If the connector and port do not connect easily, they probably do not
match. Make sure the connector matches the port.
To avoid damage to the DL or to the instrument take care to not make short-
circuit with clips of the flying cable.
Check that the cable is connected correctly and that the instrument type is
compatible with the one selected on the DL (description in the upper part of
the screen): a wrong connection may damage the DL or the instrument.

In case some instruments have been configured with an earlier version of the firmware, any
changes is not applied to the instruments already configured. To apply the changes introduced by a
new firmware, you should remove the instrument from the datalogger and re-insert it.
If, for example it has been changed the power supply of an instrument (thanks to a new firmware),
the instrument is powered with the power supply set in the old firmware. If you want to use the
new power supply it is necessary to remove the instrument from the datalogger and re-insert it.

EXTERNAL MULTIPLEXER BOX

Portable Dataloggers User Manual
It is possible to use the SISGEO External Multiplexer Boxes as Switch Panels and read them
manually using the SISGEO portable dataloggers (New Leonardo). Once you have installed the
OMNIAlog datalogger and you have done all the opportune connections between the different
unities, it will be possible to manage the External Multiplexer Boxes automatically.
If the user wants to connect the External Multiplexer Boxes to OMNIAlog, the instruments have to
be connected to 24ch multiplexer following obligatorily this order:
- firstly, all the 6 wires instruments
- secondly, all the 4 wires instruments
- thirdly, the 2 wires instruments
Indeed, OMNIAlog assigns automatically the instruments order: following this logics (6-wires
instruments, 4-wires instruments and 2-wires instruments), once the External Multiplexer Boxes
have been connected to OMNIAlog for the automatic reading it will not be necessary to re-wire the
instruments.
OMNIAlog webpages do not permit to configure manually the order of the instruments connected
to the 24ch multiplexer. For example, it is not possible to connect a 4-wires instrument to a
channel preceding that of a 6-wire instrument. The configuration procedure of the multiplexer
channels on OMNIAlog is completely automatic to guarantee the optimal configuration according
to the number of instruments to connect.
Here follows an example of the right order of 6,4 and 2-wires instruments connection.

& 4-WIRES
& 2-WIRES

ADDITION OF A CHANNEL
In the previous example, if you need to add a 4-wires instrument afterwards, you have to follow
the same above-mentioned order. This means that you have to connect the new instrument after
all the 4-wires instruments already connected. The addition of this new instrument causes the re-
wiring of all the 2-wires instruments.
& 6-WIRES
& & 4-WIRES
& 2-WIRES
In the above example, it was added the instrument (Ch. 11A-11B-12A-12B) in succession to
the other two 4-wires instruments already cabled.
As a consequence, the 2-wires instruments were shifted of two channels (Ch. 13A-13B e 14A-
14B).

PLANT DIAGRAM
Here follows an example of a definitive plant with External Multiplexer Boxes and cabinet with
OMNIAlog:

Max.
Termination resistor
The communication line, according to RS-485 standards, ends with a “termination resistor” at both
extremities.
For every External Multiplexer Boxes chain, it is necessary to configure at factory the right
termination resistor on the last node. Therefore, it is essential to give to SISGEO the plant diagram
before production.
As you could see from the schema, the 3 Multiplexer Boxes compose two “RS-485 lines”. For both
sides, the last multiplexer board has a termination resistor to balance the communication. A third
“RS-485 lines” is composed by the internal multiplexer, that has its own termination resistor.
RS-485 address
Every multiplexer board in the system must have its univocal RS-485 address (from 1 to 16) to
allow the correct addressing from the master unit (that means from OMNIAlog or from the
portable datalogger New Leonardo). Once the plant has been realized, it is possible to read any
24ch multiplexer on bus 485 from any point.

Portable Dataloggers User Manual
The connection between two Multiplexer Boxes and between a Multiplexer Box and a additional
wiring board (this is within the OMNIAlog cabinet) occurs through a 10-conductors multipolar
cable.
The cable WE610MUXZH, supplied by SISGEO, is a 10-conductors halogen free cable: 4 pairs
(2x0.35mmq) singularly twisted and shielded and 2x1.5mmq singularly shielded. The cable is
composed of 2 conductors of greater section red and black colored; these two conductors are used
for the power supply of Multiplexer cards and are connected as follows:
RED conductor: +V clamp
BLACK conductor: GND clamp
For the other conductors within the cable there isn’t any colors-diagram to be followed. It is
important only that the connections are “PIN to PIN”. Therefore, it is necessary to respect the
following schema:

B B
C C
D D

10 POLES CONNECTOR
ATTENTION: To avoid damages both to the instruments and to the dataloggers, it is necessary to
ensure that during the manual readings done through the portable datalogger, OMNIAlog is not
in acquisition mode. SISGEO suggests to physically disconnect the clamps “CH8” and “RS-485#2”
of OMNIAlog to avoid conflicts.
ATTENTION: Insert the jack of the external 12Vdc battery pack only after having connected the
supplied cable to the portable datalogger and to the 24ch multiplexer. This to cause a potential
difference on connectors’ pins and the creation of short-circuits.

RS-485 ADDRESS
Pins from 1 to 5 of DIP-switch are used to configure the RS-485 address. For this configuration the binary logics
is used: a PIN set up in ON is equivalent to 1 and a PIN set up in OFF is equivalent to 0.
PIN5 is equivalent to the most significant PIN. Here follows the configuration of the 16 addresses that could be
set up:

ENERGY-SAVING MODE
PIN 6 of the DIP-switch allows to configure the energy-saving mode of the multiplexer board.
24ch multiplexers have to be configured in SLEEP mode if the user wants to have only a single 24ch
multiplexer in operation on bus 485. Multiplexers in SLEEP mode are operative (turned on) only when they
are addressed from the master unit. Therefore, the master unit has to remove and restore the power supply
every time that it has to address a new 24ch multiplexer (for example, to pass from multiplexer “1” to
multiplexer “2”).
OMNIAlog does this operation automatically, while with portable dataloggers the operator should remove
and restore manually the power supply when it is necessary to change the multiplexer to be read.
When PIN 6 is configured as “ALWAYS ON”, the 24ch multiplexer doesn’t go in sleep mode if it is not
addressed from the master unit. If it is configured in “SLEEP” mode, the 24ch multiplexer goes in sleep if it
is not addressed.
If the user configures the 24ch multiplexers in ALWAYS ON mode, the global consumption is greater, since all
24ch multiplexers on bus 485 are turned on. Therefore, it is necessary to consider it in case of a power
supply from solar panel.
Here follows the configuration of PIN6:
LEGENDA
PIN position

PINS 7 and 8 of the DIP-switchare used to configure the speed of communication of bus RS-485. The speed
selected on 24ch multiplexer boards has to be the same of that selected on master unit (OMNIAlog or New
Leonardo) to allow the communication. Different speeds of communication block the communication of
network RS-485.
SISGEO configures 9600bps as a standard. This speed is not configurable from the user on dataloggers,
therefore all 24ch multiplexer cards have to be configured at 9600bps.
Here follows the configuration of PIN 7 and 8:
LEGENDA
Selector Position
1200bps 2400bps
4800bps 9600bps

NOTE: PINS from 1 to 5 will be configured according to the assigned RS-485 address.
The standard configuration considers the turning off of multiplexer boards after their reading (SLEEP MODE)
and a communication baud rate configured at 9600bps.
NOTE: PINS from 1 to 5 will be configured according to the assigned RS-485 address.
With the portable datalogger for the reading of the instruments connected to the multiplexer boards, the
configuration considers the multiplexer boards always turned on (ALWAYS ON) and a communication baud
rate configured at 9600bps.
