A Child in the Garden

When to the garden of untroubled thought

I came of late, and saw the open door,
And wished again to enter, and explore
The sweet, wild ways with stainless bloom
inwrought,
And bowers of innocence with beauty fraught,
It seemed some purer voice must speak before
I dared to tread that garden loved of yore,
That Eden lost unknown and found unsought.

Then just within the gate I saw a child, --

A stranger-child, yet to my heart most dear;
He held his hands to me, and softly smiled
With eyes that knew no shade of sin or fear:
"Come in," he said, "and play awhile with me;"
"I am the little child you used to be."

Children’s day is a special day for the children.

Universally, Children’s Day is celebrated on
20th November, every year. Children’s Day
was first celebrated in the year 1954, as
decided by the UN General Assembly. Till 1959
it was celebrated in the month of October. But
after 1959, 20th November was chosen for the
celebration of Children’s Day, as this date
marks the anniversary of the day in 1959,
when the Declaration of the Rights of the Child
was adopted by the U.N. General Assembly

But in India it is celebrated on 14th November,

because the date marks the birth anniversary
of legendary freedom fighter and independent
India’s first Prime Minister –Pundit Jawaharlal
Nehru. Children's day in India is celebrated on
Pundit Nehruji's birthday as a tribute to
Nehruji's love for children.

For the children it is a day of joy and freedom.

In this day all over the country, various
cultural, social, and even corporate, institutions
conduct competitions for children. Many Non-
Governmental-Organizations (NGOs) also
organise various programmes for the children.
Various competitions like quizzes, fancy dress
competitions, and elocutions are organised on
this day. Most schools have cultural
programmes for the day. Children celebrate
the day with singing, dancing and storytelling
in schools and colleges

The occasion of children’s Day is not only an

opportunity to celebrate and enjoy, but it
reminds us of the mission and message of
Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru. This day reminds to
each and every one of us, to renew our
commitment to the welfare of children and
teach them to live by Chacha Nehru’s quality
and dream. He always wanted children all over
the world to grow, prosper, get education and
prosper in life. Celebrating Children’s Day is
about giving children the right to enjoy and
grow into healthy and educated citizens of the
country
Nehru’s life
Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14th November,
1889 to Motilal Nehru and his wife Swaroop
Rani. From the beginning he was an
exceptional and brilliant child. After his early
education his father sent him abroad to pursue
higher education. Nehru completed his higher
education in England at Cambridge University.
After his return to India, Nehru practiced law
before joining into politics. After quitting the
legal profession, he joined the Congress and
Gandhi in the Freedom Struggle of India.

He was an extremely outspoken, honest,

practical and courageous politician. Pt. Nehru
was not only a great leader, statesman but also
a great philosopher and think-tact of all time.
He perfectly blended the western scientific
thinking with eastern philosophical values. And
when India gained its independence; he was
unanimously selected by the Congress to lead
the country as first Prime Minister of the
independent India.

He started to wear a rose on his jacket after a

child pinned one rose on his jacket. He often
stated that children were like the flowers in a
garden and they should be carefully nurtured.
He said that children are the future and
foundation of a nation. For him children’s were
little adults in the making. Nehru’s empathy
toward children is well-known. He once said,
“Our one goal, our bounden duty, is to gift the
future of India - our children - a country filled
with peace and tranquillity.”
