Answer all questions

1. Find the values of I and V in the circuit shown below. (2 marks) CO03

2. When the common-emitter amplifier circuit shown below is biased with a certain VBE, the CO02

8. Design the transistor inverter shown below to operate with a saturation current of 8 mA. CO01

10. In the circuit shown below, the voltage at the emitter was found to be -0.7 V. If β = 50, find CO01

IE = IC + IB => IC = 0.93 mA – 18.2 µA = 0.91 mA (1 mark)

11. Determine the Q point for the transistor with a current gain of 120 shown in the circuit. CO01

12. The transistor in the circuit below is specified to have β in the range of 50 to 150. Find the CO01
value of RB that results in saturation with an overdrive factor of at least 10. (4 marks)

ICsat = (10 – 0.2) / 1 = 9.8 mA (1 mark)
IB(EOS) = ICsat/βmin = 9.8/50 = 0.196 mA (1 mark)
IB = Overdrive factor x 0.196 = 1.96 mA (1 mark)
RB = = 2.19 kΩ ≈ 2.2 kΩ (1 mark)

13. Find the value of R of the circuit below to provide Vo = 2.4 V given that the diode has 0.7V CO03
drop at 1mA. (5 marks)

Diode has 0.7 V drop at 1 mA
From diode equation, IS = 0.691 x 10-15 A (1 mark)
Drop across each diode is 2.4/3 = 0.8 V
I =54.6 mA (2 marks)
R = (10 - 2.4)/54.6 = 139.19 Ω (2 marks)

14. Derive the input resistance, output resistance, voltage gain and overall voltage gain for the CO02
CE amplifier with emitter resistance? Also, comment on the advantages of the inclusion of

Overall voltage gain, GV = (1 mark)

When the collector current increases due to unavoidable reasons, the emitter current
increases leading to increase in emitter voltage in turn decreasing the base-emitter voltage.
This eventually decreases the collector current. Hence, the emitter resistance provides
negative feedback and stabilizes the operation of the circuit. (2 marks)
