Joints and Fittings
Joints (1)

 Sample joints that work with the new steel profiles


are provided in a new Joints and Fittings Catalogue.
 The sample joints not only show different techniques
for creating joints, including catalogue and template
joints but may provide a useful start for small clients.
 A joint specification is applied to an existing FIXING
element, automatically created when connecting
GENSECs, using the Joint button in the Modify group
of the SECTIONS tab.

Joints (2)

 At the Select gensecs prompt owning GENSECs are


selected.
 Pressing the Return key ends the selection and
displays spherical markers at the FIXING positions
with a Select joints prompt.

Joints (3)

 Joints are selected by selecting the spherical markers


which highlights them in red.

 Pressing the Return key ends the selection and


displays the Modify Joint Specification form.

 The number of joints selected is


displayed at the top of the form
and the user prompted to select a
Specification from the options list.

 Clicking the Apply button applies the Specification


Reference to all selected joints.

 Clicking the Detail button


on the form displays an
image of the joint giving all
parameters and design
parameters, indicated by
the icon.

Joints (7)

 Design Parameters may also be modified from the


Properties grid.

 When a joint is placed at either end of a member, the


FIXING is automatically modified to ensure the joint
is orientated correctly at both ends.

End Datums (1)

 If a joint is required at the an unconnected end of a


GENSEC, e.g. a baseplate joint, an End Datum
(ENDATU) is created at a selected end of the GENSEC
and a selectable joint applied.
 Clicking the End Datum button in the Connections
group of the SECTIONS tab displays the prompt Pick
sections end(s).

 Either or both ends of the GENSEC may be selected.

End Datums (2)

 After selecting the required end(s), pressing the


Return key creates the ENDATU and FIXING
elements, displays a yellow spherical marker and
displays the End Datum form.

 The joints are restricted to suitable


joints.
 Selecting a Joint Group and Joint
and modifying Design Parameters,
are similar to Modifying Joint
Specification functionality.
 Clicking the Apply button creates
the joint on the selected end of the
GENSEC.

End Datums (4)

 Note: A GENSEC can only own two ENDATUs, one


at each end.

Section Fittings (1)

for creating section fittings but may provide a useful
start for small clients.
 Section fittings are created on a single GENSEC using
the Fitting button in the Create group of the
SECTIONS tab.

 At the Select section prompt an


owning GENSEC is selected.
 Once selected the Section Fitting
form is displayed. This form
operates in the same way as the
Modify Joint Specification form
described earlier.
 Selecting a Fitting Group and a
Fitting displays the Design
Parameters, if any, at the bottom of
the form.

 Clicking the Apply button displays the prompt Select


P-line. The Plines are displayed in white on the
highlighted GENSEC and moving the cursor over a
Pline highlights and labels it.

– Note: Plines visibility is dependant on the P-line filters


settings on the Object Snapping Settings form.

Section Fittings (4)

 Once the Pline has been selected, a ‘ghost’ of the


fitting is placed at the GENSEC start, identified by a
cube marker, and a prompt Specify distance
displayed.

 A distance along the GENSEC may be entered in the


prompt textbox.

 or the distance may be specified graphically by
dragging the fitting along the Pline.

 Section fittings may be modified using the Properties


Grid or by clicking the Fitting button in the Modify
group and following the prompt sequence to display
the Modify Fixing form, which is similar to the
Create Fixing form.

Panel Fittings (1)

 Sample panel fittings are provided in a new Joints


and Fittings Catalogue.
 Panel fittings are created using the Fitting button in
the Create group of the PLATES tab.

 At the Pick panel prompt a


PANEL is selected.

 Once selected the Create Fitting


form is displayed. This form
operates in the same way as the
Create Fixing form described
earlier.
 Selecting a Fitting Group and a
Fitting displays the Design
Parameters, if any, at the bottom of
the form.

Panel Fittings (3)

 Clicking the Apply button displays a ‘ghost’ of the


fitting on the panel with distance and angle feedback
from the panel origin.
 A position may be
specified graphically
or values entered into
the U: (N wrt panel)
and V: (E wrt panel)
textboxes.
 Command options enable the angle and justification
of the fitting to be modified.
