Empowering Students with 21st Century Skills

The term 21st century skills states to a comprehensive set of knowledge, skills, work habits, and
character traits that are believed—by educators, school reformers, college professors, employers,
and others—to be critically significant to success in today’s world, predominantly in collegiate
programs and contemporary careers and workplaces. Largely, 21st century skills can be applied
in all academic subject areas, and in all educational, career, and civic settings throughout a
student’s life.

With the guiding vision of Indore Institute of Management and Research, every student will
graduate ready for corporate association, and prepared to be a globally engaged and productive
citizen. To that end, the Indore Institute of Management and Research adopted policy to bring
the infusion of 21st century skills to scale across the state. The following information captures
the 21st century mandates that our students will acquire on their path to graduation.

1. Learning Skills: The 21st century learning skills are often called the 4 C’s: critical thinking,
creative thinking, communicating, and collaborating. These skills help students learn, and so they
are vital to success in school and beyond.

 Critical thinking: Finding solutions to problems


 Creativity: Thinking outside the box
 Collaboration: Working with others
 Communication: Talking to others

2. Literacy Skills: Literacy skills help students gain knowledge through reading as well as using
media and technology. These skills also help students create knowledge through writing as well
as developing media and technology.

 Information literacy: Understanding facts, figures, statistics, and data


 Media literacy: Understanding the methods and outlets in which information is published
 Technology literacy: Understanding the machines that make the Information Age
possible

3. Life Skills: Life skills equip students to thrive in the classroom and in the world beyond. The
21st century life skills are flexibility, initiative, social skills, productivity, and leadership.

 Flexibility: Deviating from plans as needed


 Leadership: Motivating a team to accomplish a goal
 Initiative: Starting projects, strategies, and plans on one’s own
 Productivity: Maintaining efficiency in an age of distractions
 Social skills: Meeting and networking with others for mutual benefit
21st Century Skills not only provide a framework for successful learning in the classroom, but
ensure students can thrive in a world where change is constant and learning never stops. And
they are also tremendously important for our nation’s well-being. Our business community
demands a workforce with these skills to ensure our competitiveness in a global economy.The
21st century is not in the distant future – it is today. We do not have a moment to lose in
preparing our students, and our nation, to compete and to succeed.
