Australian Racism

The racism in Australia is making controversy, some statistics give a high result in racism,

while “1 in 5 school students experience racism every day, 1 in 5 people experience racism at

sports events, 1 in 3 people experience racism in the workplace, 1 in 3 people take a stand

against racism.” (All together now, s.f.), taking this statistics into account, we could affirm

that the thoughts of Australian people are in favor and tried to affect people by racism.

“Australia is not the land of the fair go, it is a nation where cruelty, ignorance,

discrimination and racism are not only common place but rewarded, respected and justified ”

(Cromb, 2015). Australian people deny this when it comes to racism, “One in ten have racist

attitudes. One in seven people living in Australia are against the concept of

multiculturalism and one in three believe there are some cultural groups that do not belong in

Australia” (All together now, s.f.). Australian population deny these attitudes, this makes

these phenomena more crowded to allow in another level of discrimination.

In 2015, a group of Australian students that were afro descendants, were forced to leave an

Apple store because the personal argument was to catalogue them as “robbers”, the video was

loaded by the kids in Facebook platform that form polemic among the anti-racist users which

wrote bad commentaries against the store brand and led the administrative head to make an

apology. This is a case in which is evidenced racism is experienced in every corner of

Australia, even in a renowned brand.

Other evidence of racism but in sports area demonstrated with Adam Goodes, number 37

of Sydney Swans players. He is being booed in his matches because of an indigenous dance

he did when he scored a goal. "A 13-year-old girl called me an ape." (Goodes, 2014), he was
not surprised but he stands up against racism to call out for people to stop this type of

commentaries. And he is right, Australian people need to finish with racism, if it happens with a

renowned person, how would be normal and further cases?

“I remember working as a dental assistant and one day, some dental students came in to see if

the dentist on duty could do a survey. One of the students was Aboriginal, and the receptionist

said that she couldn’t believe it. I asked her why and she said ‘because Aboriginals aren’t that

smart’.” (Morelli, 2017), this last exposed case makes all person question how by the color of the

person is evaluated its intelligence.

By last, when you talk about racism, you known is a worldwide problem but in case of

Australia, their problem is they don’t evaluate their actions and think they are doing all well, but

we need more persons like Adam Goodes, who encourage people to take advantage of racist

individuals and stand against them. Australian racism would not end until they understand their

mistakes and attack it from its origins.
