“Analyzing Movie: Journey into Islamic South East Asia”

Synopsis:
The movie was telling about the journey of Islam in South East Asia in detail. It tells about the
journey since the first time it came to Southeast Asia which was introduced by the traders
from India and Arab that socialized with the people in South East Asia. Moreover, the movie
also tells about the reasons of the speed of the distribution of Islam that used to experience
a decrease in speed during the came of western countries in the purpose to colonialized South
East Asia countries.

Moral:
We can see that Islam has come to our land long time ago and it has experienced many things,
the ups and downs especially in the era of colonialism by the western countries when Islam
was prohibited in some countries in South East Asia. However, with those struggles, our
ancestors can still survive and even make Islam a big religion recognized in the South East
Asia. As the evident, we can see there are lots of heritage such as mosque and cultures that
contain Islamic meanings. That shows how obedient our ancestors ware because they could
maintain Islam until today.

Analysis:
Islam was introduced decades ago by the traders from India and Arab. They affect the belief
of people they socialized with. Sumatra for instance, in Indonesia, the trade was started from
Sumatera Island which then became the center of the trade such as Palembang. Besides
trading. the presence of the traders to South East Asia were also purposed to introduce
Islamic religion in 7th century. However, Islamic religion spreads more in especially Sumatra
island when the trade brings prosperity to the the region. The traders also maintain the
relationships of the local leaders as well as brought a development towards the region.
Therefore, they influenced the leaders to have an Islamic leading style such as a Sultan to be
the leader which also influences the belief (Islam) of the citizens. However, the spread of Islam
was slowing down since the presence of the western people to colonialize some parts of
South East Asia. Somehow they prohibit the practices of Islamic religion however there were
still people that believes in Islam. The first Malay kingdom was made in Palembang which
speed up again the spread of Islam throughout the region. However, the spread of Islam was
not optimal due to unsupported geographical condition. Thankfully, Islamic kingdom from
Demak spread the Islamic influence to Sumatera, a lot of Masjid were built as well as the
teaching styles such as “Pesantren” that introduced by Wali Songo. Islamic religion was also
tried to remove some customs that contradict with the Islamic law such as “Adat Perpatih”
which is the Minangkabau customs that gives authority to the women to own the land.
