Then with a convulsive shudder the
serpentine body stopped moving,
and the fiery light of its great eyes
and hundred feet darkened to a dull
glare like the sunset of a stormy day,
and then went out in blackness.
A great darkness now overspread the
heavens, the thunder rolled and the
lightning flashed, and the wind
roared in fury, and it seemed as if the
world was coming to an end.
The Dragon King and his children
and retainers all crouched in
different parts of the palace,
frightened to death, for the building
was shaken to its foundation. At last
the dreadful night was over. Day
dawned beautiful and clear. The
centipede was gone from the
mountain.
Then Hidesato called to the Dragon
King to come out with him on the
balcony, for the centipede was dead
and he had nothing more to fear.

glittered like a liquid diamond, and
the palace was a thousand times
more beautiful by day than by night.
His host tried to persuade the
warrior to stay a few days, but
Hidesato insisted on going home,
saying that he had now finished
what he had come to do, and must
return.

coral e louças de cristal, foram
colocados perante ele, e o vinho era o
melhor que Hidesato tinha (jamais)
provado em sua vida.
Para adicionar à beleza de tudo o sol
resplandecia brilhantemente, o lago
cintilava como um diamante líquido,
e o palácio era mil vezes mais lindo
durante o dia do que durante a noite.
Seu anfitrião tentou persuadir o
guerreiro a ficar alguns dias, porém
Hidesato insistiu em ir para casa,
dizendo que ele tinha agora
terminado o que ele tinha vindo
fazer, e precisava retornar.

“Went out” é o passado do termo “go out”. No texto, o sentido de “went out” é

pode ter diversos outros sentidos. Observe abaixo alguns exemplos:

She goes out a lot.

Ela sai muito.
(sentido de sair de casa para eventos sociais)

He goes out drinking most evenings.

Ele sai para beber na maioria das noites.
(sentido de sair de casa para eventos sociais)

The message went out by e-mail to all members of the staff.

A mensagem foi enviada por e-mail para todos os membros da equipe.
(sentido de “ser enviado”)

3. the thunder rolled and the lightning flashed,

o trovão estrondou e os raios brilharam,

Na expressão “the thunder rolled” (o trovão estrondou) é interessante

destacarmos o uso do verbo “roll”. “Roll”, que normalmente é entendido como
“rolar”, tem muitos sentidos diferentes, sendo um deles o de “estrondo,
grande barulho, etc.”. Observe abaixo dois exemplos de uso:

Rolling drums.
Tambores estrondosos/barulhentos (tambores que fazem muito barulho).

The thunder rolls.

O trovão ribomba/estrondeia.

4. frightened to death, for the building was shaken…

morrendo de medo, pois o prédio tremeu…

A expressão “frightened to death” quer dizer “morrendo de medo”. Observe

abaixo mais alguns exemplos:

This poor animal is frightened to death.

Este pobre animal está morrendo de medo.

I don't want to go to the dentist today. I'm frightened to death.

Eu não quero ir ao dentista hoje. Eu estou morrendo de medo.

I'm frightened to death of spiders.

Eu morro de medo de aranhas.

5. At last the dreadful night was over.

Finalmente a espantosa noite tinha acabado.

“At last” significa “finalmente”. Observe dois exemplos abaixo:

At last we're home!

Finalmente nós estamos em casa!

We're finished at last.

Nós terminamos, finalmente.

6. The centipede was gone from the mountain.

A centopeia tinha desaparecido da montanha.

“Was gone” é o passado da estrutura “to be gone” (literalmente “estar ido”), que
é usada para dizer que algo sumiu, desapareceu, etc. Observe os exemplos
abaixo:

To my astonishment, my money was gone.

Para minha surpresa, meu dinheiro tinha desaparecido.

My bicycle was gone when I returned.

Minha bicicleta tinha desaparecido quando eu retornei.

All the food was gone.

Toda a comida tinha acabado.

7. Then all the inhabitants of the palace came out with joy…
Então todos os moradores do palácio apareceram com alegria…

O destaque na frase acima é a expressão “came out” (passado de “come out”),

que significa literalmente “sair de algum lugar / aparecer”. Veja mais alguns
exemplos de uso de “come out”:

The rain stopped and the sun came out.

A chuva parou e o sol apareceu.

I tried to say ‘I love you,’ but the words wouldn't come out.
Eu tentei dizer “Eu te amo”, mas as palavras não saiam.

The truth finally came out.

A verdade finalmente apareceu.

The movie comes out next month.

O filme sai [será lançado] mês que vem.

8. the wine was the best that Hidesato had ever tasted in his life
o vinho era o melhor que Hidesato tinha jamais provado em sua
vida
[tradução mais fluente: “o vinho era o melhor que Hidesato tinha
provado em toda sua vida”]

O destaque na frase acima é a expressão “had ever…”, usada para dizer que
algo jamais foi feito ou mesmo que algo é o melhor já feito ou o melhor que já
ocorreu. Observe abaixo alguns exemplos:

Ninguém tinha jamais pensado em vender gelo antes.

That was the most interesting film that we had ever seen.
Aquele foi o filme mais interessante que nós tínhamos jamais visto.
[tradução mais fluente: “Aquele foi o filme mais interessante que nós já vimos.”]

The earthquake was the biggest one that we had ever experienced.
O terremoto foi o maior que nós tínhamos jamais experimentado.
[tradução mais fluente: “Foi o maior terremoto pelo qual já passamos.”]
