IDS PROJECT PROPOSAL:

THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR DESIGNING, AND URBAN DESIGNING

BY: SUKHMANI BHINDER

IDS 2019-20
MS. INK
NOV. 6TH, 2019
OVERVIEW

The independent directed studies allow students to free themselves from control and
explore their interests. This year I will be stepping outside of my comfort zone and trying my
best to urban design a city. The goals that will allow me to structure this project will be, teaching
myself how to work without having resources handed to me and being able to learn how to plan
efficiently enough that work gets done on time without it being a burden. Essentially, I want to
make this year’s independent studies project a fun experience that will allow me to learn and
grow. Although I am interested in pursuing a career in the medical field I want to be able to use
this project to learn about other jobs.
On the daily, we are exposed to different systems and tools that have been designed to
help us live a more simple lifestyle. As the population increases different layouts and designs
have been created to meet the needs of individuals. Over time, each plan is evolved in different
ways and each step has a significant impact on societies all over the world. We often never
really think about the importance of planning a city. The question that will help guide my project
will be: Can I construct a city that fits each individual’s needs in a healthy way?
I want to be able to not only teach but to help others recognize the importance of urban
designing, architecture, and interior design.

SIGNIFICANCE

I currently live in a city where everything has been developed to fit my needs. I not only
am using this project to focus on urban designing, but I am using it to help learn more about
architecture and interior designing. Through this project, I myself will not only be able to learn
about what it is like in the shoes of an architect, urban designer, and interior designer, but I will
be able to learn how to create a healthy city that will have all the things I think our city is
missing. The planning of a city is what makes a city so functional, similarly, the planning of your
home can make a very tiny room look more spacious.

PROJECT PLAN

I will be able to complete this project successfully by researching, reading different

articles, watching youtube videos, and asking people who have a background in these topics for
their opinion. I will try my very best to not only consider my opinions on what a city should be
like but instead I will ask lots of people from different countries for their opinions. At the end of
the year when we present our projects I will present a physical and/or online blueprint as well as
a brief overview of how I got to my final design. I believe that teachers and students that enjoy
art, math, and planning will enjoy this as it is made up of those three topics. I believe that no one
has done a project exactly like this, but maybe a similar one. I tried to keep myself from
exploring only one topic which was architecture, so I decided that instead of designing buildings
I should also design a city and then to make it more challenging by including interior designing.

- This includes researching and
sketching possible outcomes

official design
- Depending on how long this

How I will meet the core competencies:

Communication: I will teach others about the things I learned and the difficulties of these jobs. I
also hope to get feedback from others on how they thought my project was and whether it was
interesting or not. I will try to meet and get in touch with people who will hopefully be able to give
me some pointers on how to structure this project.

Creative thinking: My project’s success is based on how creatively I think and how I put my
creative thinking skills to use. I will have to try my very best to design beautiful and functional
buildings, along with open concept interior designing, and these designs will be displayed in a
city that will be created by me. My goal is not to make a typical or “just a functional city” I want to
be able to put my creative thinking skills to the test and create a city that will bring the
community together.

Critical thinking: I will try my best and decipher websites in order to prevent myself from basing
all my information off of disinformation. I will make sure to take my time in planning my city and
deciding what are the important things needed to make sure a city is functional.

Positive Personal and Cultural Identity: I will make sure that my city consists of ways that will
bring the community together which will promote multiculturism. Overall, I want to create a city
that sets a positive tone in terms of being yourself and expressing yourself. This kind of city will
be successfully created if I include many social gathering areas like parks and community
centres.

Personal Awareness and Social Responsibility: I will make sure to stay on top of my game at all
times and make room for mistakes in my schedule. The only way this project can be completely
successful is if I try my best to stay on task and set deadlines.

Social Responsibility: I will maintain and create respectful relationships with people around my
community in order to gather different opinions and views. I will create healthy relationships with
people who have jobs in or close to these careers in order to create a more informative final
product. Overall, I will respect, listen, and comprehend, the opinions and feedback I get from
others.

RESOURCES

I will talk to different friends, family, and teachers, to see whether they can give me some
pointers or whether they can connect me with someone who has some helpful information. I will
also use youtube videos, websites, and textbooks to guide me through some questions I may
have.
PREPARATION

1. Began researching and downloading software that will help me create blueprints and
designs
2. Went through some youtube videos on the important things to consider when creating a
city
3. Researched about books that could possibly guide me through creating a building

CONCLUSION

Essentially I want to fascinate my audience with how much work it takes to create such a
functional city and home. I want them to leave my presentation with questions that will hopefully
spark their curiosity. I also want people to simply understand that there is more to a city than its
buildings and roads and that there is more to a home than a bed and kitchen. I want people to
notice the complexity of work and creativity put to creating and planning where everything is in a
city and the amount of work put in creating your home more spacious and lively.
