THE CHEMICAL VAULT SCHOOL OF DETERGENT MANUFACTURING

DISHWASHING LIQUID PRODUCTION

1. Formulation

Part one – Equipment

For starters you need:
1. Mixing vessel – use a plastic bucket, don’t use steel or aluminium buckets because they
are corroded by caustic soda and associate acids used.
2. For agitator, use cooking stick (mugoti or musika).
3. Clear bottles or beakers for occasional sampling.

Part two – Health and safety

This section is necessary to prevent bodily harm and/or harm to equipment and property.
ANY CHEMICAL INCLUDING WATER HARMFUL.
So be very careful when handling chemicals, store the raw materials where they are safe and
away from reach of children. Create a cabinet or locker and put a lock and key.
Label all chemicals you have in storage clearly with a bright marker.
Always follow the standard operating procedures when mixing chemicals to prevent side
reactions which may trigger explosions and possible death.
Use PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) always when dealing with
chemicals.
- You need a face mask to prevent inhalation of toxic fumes.
- You need PVC gloves, these ones you can get them at a local pharmacy.
- You need a work suit and/or dust coat.
- You need a closed leather shoe especially a safety shoe.

Part three - Raw materials

(Sulphonic acid)

For 10 litre batch of dishwashing liquid.

Raw material Quantity (KG)

Water 10
Caustic soda 0.1 (100grams)
Sulphonic acid 1
Bermocol 0.05 (50 grams)
SLES 0.5 (500grams)
Triethanolamine (TEA) 0.05
Coco-ethanolamine(CDEA) 0.05
Lemon scent To taste
Salt To desired viscosity

2. Standard Operating Procedure (S.O.P)

1. Make sure or verify that mixing vessels, scales and buckets used for weighing raw
materials and utensils are cleaned and sanitised.
2. Verify that pH meters and scales are functioning.

a. Main mix
Add:
- Water to the bucket
- Caustic soda slowly
- Stir until caustic dissolves completely.
Be very careful because this step produces hot water (exothermic reaction) and caustic soda is
corrosive thus must be handled with care.
b. Add :
- SLES and stir until completely dissolved.
- Sulphonic acid
- Salt and stir well
Be careful when stirring not to do so randomly as it produces foam which will make it
difficult to see your reacting mixture.
c. Add
- Bermocol until required viscosity is reached.

d. Add a sachet of dye.

e. Put in a container and leave product to settle.
