z
What is an Inquiry or Investigation?

RESEARCH is a stepping stone to scientific and technological

advancement.
z
Scientific Research

Scientific Research is particularly undertaken to find an

answer to a baffling question or come up with a solution
to a problem.

Significant results taken altogether, especially those

generated from multidisciplinary approaches and which
deal with national or regional frameworks, could even
spur economic progress and improve technology.
z
Inquiry

Is carried out systematically to bring about new

ideas, concepts, technologies, and products for
practical applications.
z
An inquiry entails five major elements

Hypothesis

Publicize
INQUIRY Strategize

Synthesize Mobilize

Research emanates from a simple situation, a hypothesis, a problem

or a mere observation that requires a factual answer.
z
The Figure shows each step must be embarked
upon to ensure that the new information or the
solution being presented has integrity and is
trustworthy.

A Research Problem lacking a good

foundation, a poorly planned research
framework, the use of outdated methods and
techniques and invalidated research data, or the
absence of a research report will nullify the
inquiry or investigation.
z
z
Two types of Research

Applied Research
Leads to new products or new technologies that can
later be commercialized and adopted widely

Basic Research
Provide sufficient evidence to prove a certain concept or
principle under investigation, resulting in new
knowledge or validated theories.

z
Formulating Research questions

A specific research problem has to be addressed.

You may identify a research problem by going over

specific situations.

Background of the Study presents specific problems

requiring solution.
z
Review of Related Literature

Refers to studies, inquiries, investigation and research

work undertaken by other researchers in line with the
field of study that your research problem may be
classified into.

Sources of literature may include journal articles, books,

reprints, newspapers, websites, result of surveys and
interviews, and the like.
z
Formulating Hypothesis

Hypothesis could be a possible solution to your

research problem. However, a hypothesis has to go
through a series of investigations before it is validated
and accepted.

It must undergo all types of scrutiny to verify whether it

is a fact or a fallacy.
z
Processing of Data

Raw data mean nothing and so, it is also your

responsibility to process them so as to extract any
patterns or trends.

Processing of data entails the use of statistical

treatment.

Processed data are solid evidence that could be used to

draw conclusions.
z
Communicating the Results

Communicating the outcome of your research serves

the following purpose:
1. Acknowledgement of support from funding
institutions.
2. Documented contribution to knowledge and
development in a given field of study.
3. Eliciting prompt feedback, both negative and
positive.
