We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to name a horror movie that
was SO scary, they couldn't make it all the way through it. Here are some of the
~spookiest~ responses:

1. Hereditary (2018)

A24

I love scary movies, but couldn't make it through this one. Not so much because it was "scary," but
because it psychologically messed with me. My husband was into it, so I couldn't leave the theater,
but I literally just sat there with my head hidden in his arm the last third of the movie.

2. Lights Out (2016)

I knew that, even after only a couple of minutes, I wouldn’t ever be able to turn the lights off again if I
kept watching it, so I decided to stop mid-way through.

4. The Fly (1986)

If the inside-out baboon didn't make you want to turn the movie off, then the maggot delivery sure
did. It's a remarkable movie and a great take on the original, but anyone who makes it through that
movie in the first sitting is a hero.

5. The Human Centipede 2 (2011)

It was disturbing and creepy. I don’t even think I got through half of the movie.

6. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

This movie gave me such terrible second-hand anxiety in theaters that I still can’t watch the whole
thing. It’s a great movie from what I saw, but the thought of being held captive and not knowing
what’s going on in the outside world gives me such bad anxiety.

7. The Grudge (2004)

I first saw part of it when I was about seven years old. It scared me so much, I had nightmares for
weeks. As I grew up, I started to really get into horror movies and most of the new ones didn't scare
me. I figured I would try to watch this one again, expecting it to not be as scary. I WAS WRONG. To
this day, I refuse to watch it.

8. Alien (1979)

The first time I tried watching it, I was 11 and at a sleepover with some friends. We were all in the
basement with the lights on and, just as a suspenseful part was about to happen, the power went out
and we were all thrown into pitch black. Scariest moment of my life.

9. One Missed Call (2008)

My mom, my younger sister, and I were watching this in my mom's room. During one particularly
intense scene, the DVD player suddenly turned off. At first we thought the DVD was scratched
because we'd rented it, but no. It was the DVD player. Straight up turned off. There wasn't a power
outage in the area since all the lights were still on. The three of us just said "NOPE" and returned that
thing. We never attempted to watch it again, and never tried to find out how it ended.

10. Annabelle: Creation (2017)

I saw it in theaters but, by the end, I just completely covered my eyes and was trying to think happy
thoughts. I had nightmares for weeks.

This one's on Netflix. Clowns don't really scare me, but that one was so disturbing I couldn't keep it
on for more than a few minutes!

12. The Descent (2009)

The Descent

I tried watching this one with my husband and BOTH of us screamed so loud on a couple of parts that
I just had to walk away. I went upstairs to pet my dogs so I could calm down. To this day, I still can’t
finish that movie.

13. The Ring (2002)

I consider myself a horror movie super-fan, but I have yet to watch this to the end. I’ve tried twice.
First time, I walked out of the movie theater, crying. Second time, it was a sunny afternoon, but 45
minutes in it started storming like crazy, so I couldn’t finish it because I was too scared.

14. Signs (2002)

Specifically, the famous part at the birthday party when the alien walks by the screen. I was in 7th
grade and it scared the ever-living out of me so bad, I had to sleep on the couch for six months.

It’s a silent black and white film that reimagines the story of Genesis. I saw a gif online from it and was
curious what it was from, so I looked up the film. Biggest mistake of my life. For WEEKS I could not
close my eyes without seeing it.

It's this stupid movie from the '80s. I, unfortunately, watched some of it at a very young age and it
traumatized me. I love horror films now, and have no problem watching blood and gore, but thinking
about that stupid movie still scares the crap out of me.

I eventually made it through to the end, but I had to take a LONG BREAK in the middle because I
seriously thought I was going to pass out.

This movie traumatized me, made me hate scary movies, and gave me nightmares for three years.

19. The Nun (2018)

My friend and I were spending the day together, and decided to go watch this in theaters. When it
started, we noticed most of the theater was empty. We spent the entire beginning of the movie
covering our eyes until I finally suggested we leave and get tacos instead, so that’s what we did.

20. The Exorcist (1973)

I’ve tried to watch this a few times, but only ever get halfway through it before it starts to make my
insides feels wrong. I know that sounds odd, but there’s something about her voice when she’s
possessed. I’ll never forget the time my husband and I fell asleep with the TV on. I woke up in the
middle of the night and it was on TV. I couldn’t even open my eyes, just hearing it was scaring me. I
was frantically reaching around the bed, eyes closed, trying to find the remote so I could turn it the
hell off.

21. And finally, The Shining (1980)

The first time I saw a scene from this I had to turn off the TV and leave the house! The scene where
Danny is foaming at the mouth and the dead lady was rising out of the tub was too much for me.
