We asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to name a horror movie that was so
scary, they had to stop watching in the middle of it — and they did NOT disappoint! Here
are just a few of the ~most terrifying~ responses:

1. Jaws (1975)

Universal Pictures

"After watching just the opening scene as a kid, I was too afraid to go to the bathroom. Like, I
seriously thought that the shark might jump out and bite me in the rear end."

—k4da4fb455
2. Unsane (2018)

Bleecker Street

"This was the most unsettling movie I’ve ever seen. Basically, this poor girl is trapped in a mental
institution with her stalker as her caretaker. It was just too much for me. I had to stop the movie
because I was literally crying at one point, I was so uncomfortable."

—aprilinthed

3. I Saw the Devil (2010)

Peppermint & Co.

"I typically love scary movies and have easily seen hundreds of them, but this Korean movie was the
first one I ever stopped midway through. It’s about a serial killer and a cop’s quest to find him...and
that's all I'll say without giving too much away."

—BonkersTheCat3000

4. Evil Dead (2013)

TriStar Pictures

"The remake messed me up really badly for a few weeks. I didn't even finish it, but I was so disturbed
that night that I couldn't close my eyes for more than a blink. I really was nauseous and shaking the
rest of the day, even though I could only make it through the first third of the movie."

—Kjaco

5. Signs (2002)
Buena Vista Pictures

"I went to see this at the theater when I was around 12. The first time you see the alien on the roof of
the barn, I freaked the heck out...I couldn't breathe. My grandmother thought I was having an asthma
attack, so she stopped the movie. The best part is that I didn't even HAVE asthma, I was just
dramatic."

—laurennn0420

6. Wolf Creek (2005)

Roadshow Entertainment

"The one movie I couldn't finish or try to watch again (and never even recommend to people) is this
one. It’s based on a true story, set in Australia, and is completely freaking terrifying. It's VERY real-
feeling and VERY upsetting."

—patriciac4c3f3a648
7. Ghost Ship (2002)

Warner Bros. Pictures

"When I was in the eighth grade, my friend and I were watching this. We were eating Rice Krispies
Treats cereal when the part with the maggots came on. We thought we were going to puke and had
to stop the movie immediately. I slept alone in my friend's sister's room that night and was STILL
scared the whole night."

8. Final Destination (2000)

New Line Cinema

"The first one scared the crap out of me. It literally got to the point that I was begging my sister to
leave the theater. I’ve always been afraid of flying, so that opening scene destroyed me."

—kimberlyw431d55521

9. It Follows (2015)

Radius-TWC

"I have seen A LOT of scary movies, but the only one I had to literally walk away from was this movie."

—Kittytoes

10. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

Screen Gems

"I was in high school, and during the scene when she’s in the barn counting to 6 (the number of
disciples who betrayed Jesus), I started crying because I was so scared. I left the theater in the
middle of that part and still, to this day, haven’t finished that movie. I’m not even religious and I found
it terrifying."

—rebekahl45fd4eb79

11. The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

Vanguard

"This movie isn't scary so much as it's just sick. It's one of only, like, five movies I couldn't finish
watching. It just made me sick to my stomach, and I usually love horror movies!"

—Sobrien91

12. When a Stranger Calls (1979)

Columbia Pictures

"I watched the original movie around the same age that I started babysitting as a kid, and even
though I didn't watch it until the end, it terrified me for YEARS. I was always worried that someone
was hiding upstairs."

—Smee

13. The Village (2004)

Buena Vista Pictures

"My dad made me watch this when I was around 6, and because I was so young, I didn't really
understand what the movie was about and fully thought that the main creature was a REAL thing. We
had to turn it off halfway through, and I had nightmares about it for around 10 YEARS until my friend
made me rewatch it with her, and now I laugh at it."

—mckenzieholahan1132

14. Mother! (2017)

Paramount Pictures

"I'm surprised no one named this one yet! I couldn't finish it because it was so weird, so I read the full
synopsis and it creeped me the heck out. I'm truly glad I turned it off."

—jessicay440de10fa

15. The Watcher in the Woods (1980)

Buena Vista Distribution

"When I was a kid, my dad rented this and put it on for me to watch while he went to get pizza. Movie
rentals were expensive back then, so I was laying on the couch too terrified to watch it, but also too
terrified to turn it off. I made it to the creepy 'Narek' scene before I gave up and told my dad when he
got home that I couldn't do it. I’m 42 now and STILL have not seen it to the end."

—jessicarosep
16. Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

IFC Midnight

"I straight-up lost my shit midway through the movie and had to basically beg my boyfriend to turn it
off (meanwhile, he was laughing at me the entire time)."

—veronica_cachairs

17. I Spit on Your Grave (1978)

The Jerry Gross Organization

"This movie remains the most vile thing I ever tried to watch. I’m all for a great revenge movie, but this
crossed too many lines."

—diyanahj

18. Hostel (2005)

Screen Gems

"I had a full-blown panic attack in the middle of the movie that got so bad that I had to turn it off. It's
so disgusting."

—Mkr687

19. The Strangers (2008)

Rogue Pictures

"My boyfriend and I were home alone on Halloween and it was my (stupid) idea to watch this. BIG
MISTAKE. I'm very paranoid to begin with, so when my boyfriend pointed out the masked man in the
house with the girl, I had to turn it off. No shame."

—kathrynm4c2962827

20. The Collector (2009)

LD Entertainment

"This movie is so unbelievably hard to watch because of all the contraptions set up. You never see
anything coming. The part with the cat broke my heart, and I haven't been able to sit through it past
that part."

—abigailg4cdddf51a

21. Pet Sematary (1989)

Paramount Pictures

"I dipped out of the original as soon as Zelda came on-screen. It's been well over 10 years since I
tried watching it, and she still haunts my dreams."

—keln96

22. The Human Centipede (2009)

Bounty Films

"I could not (and will not EVER) finish this one. I’ve seen hundreds of scary movies, but none of them
have ever made me feel like I was going to be physically ill until this one."

—jenniferl40be2a32b
