REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The South Korean TV networks began airing dramas regularly in the early 1960’s. at that time most
dramas were made to educated public and support the military government. Moreover, TV Korean
dramas began to become popular form of family entertainment. Later on, in the year 1980’s, the
variety of Korean dramas, focusing on the lives and love stories of the younger generations to
attract young viewers (Kalbi, 2016).

Over the years Korean dramas have evolved immensely. But we can all agree that it has been for
the better. the reach and impact they have today is so much greater than back in the day.(manse,
2017)

According to Casasola (2017), Korean dramas are undeniably addictive. The plot can go from cliché
but subtle to deep and unpredictable which is probably the main reasons to why we super love it.
The way that the elements and the story are represented in a different ways, adding the fact that
Korean actor/actresses and the impassive storylines that either blows our mind and makes us
extremely ”kilig”. Casasola also claimed that they are certain side effects after watching Korean
dramas as stated:

 The viewers can’t stop themselves from watching another episodes.

 The viewers are emotional during heartbreaking and sad scenery.
 Standards in a girlfriend/boyfriend becomes higher.
 Finds themselves uttering Korean expressions or words.
 Suddenly takes interest in learning the Korean languages
 Experience the last episode syndrome
 Ultimate goal is to go to south korea.

Moreover, according to Salmeen(2007),she stated that: the biggest impact of Korean dramas is the
culture and how well written the stories are also the etiquettes and mannerisms shown. Another
impact would be that they consume lot of time because they are highly addicting.

According to Sree(2017) there are positive and negative effect of being addicted to Korean dramas
as stated:

Positives effects are:

 You have started dressing up like k-drama actresses

 You started searching make up kits which is used by Korean actresses
 You get top kniw more about makeups and how they using it
 You are motivated by their hardworking tendencies and perseverance
 You have learned a lot about Korean culture, tradition, religious view, relationships and
dating style

Negative effects are:

 If you are addicted to Korean drama you started to ignoring everyone and vice versa
 You keeping on checking your mobile updates
 You are surrounded by spoilers but you can’t help
 Your expectations will go high in relationships, so you can’t find right matches for dating
Raine(2016) stated that Marathoning leads to a phenomenon known as sleep loss. This happens
when you watches most of a Korean drama in one night and still have to get up for school or work.
This phenomenon keeps reoccurring despite the side effects of sleepiness, crabbiness, and the
desperate desire to finish out the drama. You make endless promises to yourself that you’ll “only
watch until the end of this episode.” In the end, you glance at the clock at 5 A.M. after finishing five
episodes because how can you stop when the actor is fighting like a heroine winning and
discovering the secrets of his past. A very suspense episodes.

According to DramaFever, while its user base is made up mostly of women of color, a huge chunk
of them are white females. About 43% of their female audiences were white, 27% Latino, 24% Asian
and 17% black. They are equally hot on video streaming sites like Hulu and Netflix.

 Eye candy! – The stars of dramas are very attractive. There is a reason there are lots of
“broody shower scenes” and “princess for a day makeovers” to be found in Korean shows.

American movies and television. Foul language is rare, violence is minimal, and love scenes
rarely progress past kissing. In fact, even seeing a French kiss in a Korean drama is

plots that have been recycled for seasons. The plots, types of characters, and even the
settings in K-dramas feel new and different and, therefore, more exciting.
 Cool clothes – The fashion in dramas has definite trend appeal. Many outfits are straight
from the runway. The accessories are just as amazing as the clothes. Drama stars dress the
way most of us would in our daydreams.
 Mouthwatering food – It’s hard to watch a drama and not get cravings for ramen. Nearly
every episode features delicious-looking dishes like rolled up eggs, hearty soups, and grilled
steak. And your hand dexterity will improve with dramas because you are sure to have
simultaneous chopstick cravings as well.
 Rocking music – K-Pop is even more popular than Korean dramas right now. It’s not hard to
understand it’s popularity either. It has catchy beats and fun lyrics. There is also a hefty
sprinkling of English words in K-Pop. And the good news is that dramas showcase plenty of
K-Pop music and K-Pop stars are drama regulars.
 Smorgasbord of choices – There is a drama to suit every taste. Light romantic comedies are
a popular fare. There are also meatier melodramas for people who want to cry a lot. Genre
can even be seasoned to taste with historical, fantasy, science fiction, action, romance, and
many other drama ingredients.
 The format – A typical Korean drama is 16-20 episodes and then it is done. The length is
perfect to tell a whole, connected story that has a strong buildup and conclusion. The season
is longer than a movie, so viewers because more emotionally invested. And it has a
definitive end so the plot doesn’t become about filling time to last for multiple seasons.
 Addictive properties – Korean dramas successfully create emotional connections with
viewers. Characters are developed and brought through trials and tribulations in such a way
that the audience relates to the characters and feels the same emotions. The cliff hanger
endings of nearly every episode leave viewers squirming till the next episode can resolve the
conflict. The tension is built up so expertly that it is more emotionally resonant when the
 main couple finally hold hands halfway through the series than when a full-blown bedroom
scene happens in an American series.

In a study presented by Magtortor(2013) it revealed that the rising popularity of Korean culture
throughout the world made a great impact on the lives of the teenagers in today’s generation with irs
teledramas, films, pop music, etc. In her paper it founded that, youths are the one who are most
influenced by the Korean wave and one of those re the Filipino youths. Those youths are exposed
to the different kinds and genres of music and Korean dramas. In going to school, you easily
observed that Korean sensations are almost everywhere. You can notice that students are listening
and singing songs in Korean language, talked about their favorite Korean dramas then admire the
actor and actresses in the movie and sometimes impersonates their looks.

Yap (2017), concluded that beyond Kimchi, K-pop and Koreannovelas, Koreans are becoming a
ubiquitous presence in the Philippines. Since 2006, Koreans have been the top visitors to the
Philippines.

Temblor (2009) concluded that k-drama is known for its fresh storylines and scenic cinematography.
It has captured good following among neighboring countries and even among westerners. Its stories
appeal to the masses, especially the youth and middle aged. The cast usually includes an eye

way in importing Korean dramas in the country which have become hit in the 2000’s. Abacan says
Filipinolove Koreannovelas because they can relate to the stories. Most of the time; the Korean
dramas are quite escapist and moving. ABS-CBN Raymundo said Koreannovelas offer Filipino
audience a change of pace from local programming. “Koreannovelas give viewers a different style of
storytelling from usual Filipino soap operas, or “teleseryes.” Since Korean dramas are aired only two
hours a week, compared to the Filipino daily 30- minute episode, viewers can expect a faster pace.

According to Yuchen & Yi ci (2015), the findings of their study concluded that eighty percent of
students in their school have watched Korean dramas . and the two main reasons why these
students would like to watch Korean dramas are the content and the cast. Sixty two percent of
students averagely spend one hour watching Korean dramas in one day. Therefore, it can prove
that Korean dramas have become a fad among most students in their school. Some answered
Korean dramas do not attract them. In their survey, most students in their school have watched
Korean dramas. There are two main effects of Korean dramas in the students. One is the students
academic performances and the things they adapt in watching Korean dramas such as product. On
the other hand, after watching Korean drama, most of the teenager become Korean maniacs and
actively participate in many activities, but they aren’t willing to spend their money buying products
related to Korean dramas. Form their survey they concluded that Korean dramas are exactly
popular with the students in their school, but watching Korean drama doesn’t bring them negative
effects, no matter on their schoolwork or in their everyday lives.

According to naidu(2015) based on the findings on his study. From the collected data the researcher
is able to establish that audience between the ages groups of 21-30 formed the highest number of
Korean drama viewers. The female audience seemed to take up to more number of k drama
viewing as compared to other exes. Of the 100 participants who took the survey, 81% of them had
watched k-drama, thereby proving k-dramas reach and popularity among its audience. Many of the
viewers was able to pick up to various habits depicted on the shows in which by these changes their
daily lives and behaviors. In his research, the hypothesis f is the null hypothesis as there is no
relationship between the age and gender for k-drama viewership. There is no age barriers for
people to or not top watch K-dramas.
