Many people think that they can get sick by going into cold weather improperly dressed; however,
illnesses are not caused by temperature-they are caused by germs. So while shivering outside in the
cold probably won’t strengthen your immune system, you’re more likely to contract an illness indoors
because you will have a greater exposure to germs.
Dear Bela,
I’m writing to you concerning of my last day in Yogyakarta. I just got back from Borobudur, the
wonderful temple I’ve ever seen. The weather is fine. We are now staying in a hotel. It’s not far
from Malioboro. We are treated well here. It has many excellent staff who serve the customers.
We plan to go around Malioboro after the children take a short nap. We want to enjoy having
“lesehan” there. It is a kind of a restaurant but we sit on the ground.
Many kinds of local handicraft are sold along Malioboro Street. Both domestic and foreign
tourists are interested in them. I want to buy some as souvenirs. Don’t worry, I’ll also buy you
the most interesting one.
Love,
Dara

Lisbon
Portugal
Dear Emmanuel,
I want to thank you for your kind letter and your attempt to understand my Portuguese. I am very
eager to meet you and your family when I come to Lisbon in September.
I thought it would be a good idea to tell you a little about myself so we are not complete strangers
when I get to Lisbon. I am 16 years old and I am one year away from graduating high school. I am
planning on continuing my education at hometown college and majoring in Finance so that I work in
the banking field. I have been told that your father is a bank manager.
I have one older sister who is married with a child. I have an older brother who is graduating from
Boston College this spring and also plans to work in the financial field. He has no children yet, but
soon to be married after graduation.
What I know about Lisbon? I should tell you learned from Google and History class. I have read that it
is a very lovely city. Does it snow much there?
Sincerely
Mary Ashton
Lungs are very important. Our right and left lungs seem to breathe by themselves. When we
breathe in, our lungs are being pulled outwards by muscles in our chest. To breathe out, the
muscles squeeze your chests in again. The push the air out of our lungs.
Now let’s see how lungs work. When we breathe in, each alveolus fills up with the air and
takes the oxygen from it. The oxygen molecules pass through tiny holes in the alveolus, into the
blood vessels around it. These blood vessels are so small and only one blood cell can go down
them at a time. Each blood cell picks up a load of oxygen as it goes past.
In return, our blood cells drop off waste for the lungs to rod of. This is mainly carbon dioxide,
the waste gas made by our cells as they work. It floats from the blood vessels into alveoli and up
to the bronchioles and comes out in your breath.
