No fue sino hasta la mitad del siglo pasado que se demostró el mecanismo
preciso de la expansión rápida del maxilar debido a que no existen radiografías
disponibles. La expansión rápida maxilar fue reintroducida en los Estados
Unidos hace más de 50 años en estudios hechos en gatos (DEBANNE) 1958 y
en cerdos (HASS) 1959 corroboraron que la sutura media palatina se abría al
utilizar este procedimiento.
Pero tales sistemas cayeron con rapidez en desuso y solo hasta hace unas
pocas décadas, este procedimiento se vuelve a retomar como herramienta
valiosa dentro de la terapéutica ortodontica/ ortopédica.
DISYUNCION
Está indicada en pacientes en crecimiento (hasta los 16-18 años de edad) que
presentan una disminución de la dimensión transversal del maxilar superior,
generalmente acompañada de una mordida cruzada posterior bilateral
(PROFFIT Y COLS., 2008)
MALOCLUSIONES TRANVERSALES
En las ventajas de este tipo de Expansor, esta ser higiénico gracias a que está
construido en acero inoxidable, tiene gran rigidez y soporta fuerzas pesadas.
Quad-Helix: este aparato fue introducido en la época de los 60’s por el Dr.
Ricketts, se utiliza principalmente en la dentición primaria o mixta para la
Expansión Lenta Maxilar. Se fabrica con dos bandas en los molares a las que
se une (por soldadura o cajuelas) una estructura de alambre calibre 0.38
pulgadas con dos o cuatro Hélix, los primeros dos en la zona anterior y los
otros a nivel de los molares. Es recomendable en pacientes de dentición
decidua y mixta logrando la separación de la sutura palatina, está diseñado
para expandir lateralmente y rotar caninos y molares (BELL Y LE COMPETE,
1981).
