Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are three food groups that give us energy. Many foods have a
combination of several of these substances, but certain foods are especially rich in one of them.
There are two main groups of carbohydrates-the starches and the sugars. The starches include bread,
crackers, and most cereals. Products like noodles and spaghetti are rich in starch as are such vegetables as
potatoes, rice and corn.
Honey, molasses and syrups of all kinds have much sugar in them. Many berries and fruits also
contain large amounts of sugar.
All greasy and oily foods contain fats. Olive oil and coconut oil are liquid fats. Some fatty meats,
such as bacon and fat pork, contain much fat. Dairy products like cream and butter are sources of fat.
Proteins are often called body-building foods, but they too can supply the body with energy. Meats
such as beef, pork and lamb are good sources of protein. So is poultry. Fish and other seafood like shrimp,
clams and lobsters supply protein in another form. Products such as cheese, eggs and milk also contain
protein. Certain plants, for instance beans, peas and some kinds of nuts, are good substitute sources of
protein if meat is not available.
