Emilio Aguinaldo was the first president of the Philippines. He led revolutionary forces against Spanish colonial rule in the 1890s and declared Philippine independence in 1898. Some of his major accomplishments included establishing the revolutionary government in Biak-na-Bato in 1897, defeating Spanish forces at the Battle of Alapan in 1898 where the Philippine flag was first unfurled, and proclaiming Philippine independence on June 12, 1898. However, he was eventually captured by U.S. forces in 1901 after the Philippine-American War.
