USES OF FOURIER SERIES & TRANSFORMS

MATHEMATICIAN BEHIND FOURIER SERIES

Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier was a French

mathematician and physicist born in Auxerre and best
known for initiating the investigation of Fourier series,
which eventually developed into Fourier analysis and
harmonic analysis, and their applications to problems
of heat transfer and vibrations. The Fourier transform
and Fourier's law of conduction are also named in his
honour. Fourier is also generally credited with the
discovery of the greenhouse effect.
Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier (1768 - 1830)
FOURIER SERIES
In mathematics, a Fourier series is
a periodic function composed of
harmonically related sinusoids,
combined by a weighted
summation. With appropriate
weights, one cycle (or period) of
the summation can be made to
approximate an arbitrary function
in that interval. As such, the
summation is a synthesis of
another function. The discrete-time
Fourier transform is an example of
Fourier series. The process of
deriving the weights that describe
a given function is a form of
Fourier analysis. For functions on
unbounded intervals, the analysis
and synthesis analogies are
Fourier transform and inverse
transform.
FOURIER
TRANSFORMS

The Fourier transform (FT)

decomposes a function of time (a
signal) into its constituent
frequencies. This is similar to the
way a musical chord can be
expressed in terms of the volumes
and frequencies of its constituent
notes. The term Fourier transform
refers to both the frequency
domain representation and the
mathematical operation that
associates the frequency domain
representation to a function of
time.

Signal Processing
Signal Processing is the art
and science of modifying
acquired time-series data for
the purposes of analysis or
enhancement. Examples
include spectral analysis
(using the Fast Fourier or
other transforms) and
enhancing acquired data
using digital filtering.
Fourier Series Application in Electrical Engineering
In Electrical Engineering, there are several instances where one deals with
signals(waveforms) and manipulations of signals. The manipulation may be any
operation such as addition, multiplication, differentiation, integration etc. This
manipulation maybe a result of a tangible electrical circuit(RC, LC, RLC) or simply an
abstract system. Hence, a strong analytical method is needed to examine the
results and side-effects.
Fourier Series Application in Quantum Mechanics
Quantum mechanics, a subject that seems to use every complicated math concept known to
man, not surprisingly uses the Fourier Transform. But in this context, the change of basis is
not between time and frequency, but between position and momentum space. Mathematically,
the duality between position and momentum is an example of Pontryagin duality. In particular,
if a function is given in position space, f(r), then its Fourier transform obtains the function in
momentum space, φ(p). Conversely, the inverse transform of a momentum space function is a
position space function.
Fourier Series Application in Image Processing
The Fourier Transform is
an important image
processing tool which is
used to decompose an
image into its sine and
cosine components. The
output of the
transformation
represents the image in
the Fourier or frequency
domain, while the input
image is the spatial
domain equivalent.
Fourier Series Application in Vibration Analysis
The fast Fourier transform (FFT) is an efficient algorithm used to compute a
discrete Fourier transform (DFT). This Fourier transform outputs vibration amplitude
as a function of frequency so that the analyzer can understand what is causing the
vibration.
