How To Use This Template

 This brief has been formatted to save you time by doing all the
formatting for you! Making changes to the formatting is easy as
copying and pasting.
 Reminder: Simply highlight this page to delete it, or copy it and
paste it onto a separate document for reference. Don’t worry; it
won’t mess up the page formatting.

Table of Contents

1. The first thing you should do is highlight the table of contents and
then delete everything except the words “Table of Contents”

2. Don’t worry! When you’re finished with your brief, simply


generate a new Table of Contents. The new Table of Contents will
match your new Headings exactly!!!

a. REMINDER! How to generate a Table of Contents or


Authorities
i. PC: On the References tab, in the Table of Contents
group, click Table of Contents, and then click Insert
Table of Contents.
1. Make sure you’re inserting the ToC that says
“From Template”

ii. MAC: Click Insert  Index and Tables  and then OK.

Table Of Authorities

1. The Table of Authorities is also formatted, however depending on


your writing style, it might be best to wait to mark many of your
citations until after the writing process is largely over. However if you
don’t foresee a lot of changes, marking you citations can save you
time in the end.
2. If possible, make sure you’re correctly citing things. When you’re
finished, simply go through and mark your citations and generate
your Table of Authorities

Adding, Updating, and Deleting Headers/Subheaders/Issues


Presented/ and New Sections

1. Each of the Headers, Subheaders, etc., has specific formatting


applied to them. This formatting tells the Table of Contents what
to generate and how it should look.
a. Heading 1: Main heading for the title sections of your brief;
b. Heading 2: The heading style for your first argument
sections;
c. Heading 3: The heading style for your second level argument
sections;
d. Heading 4: The heading style for your third level argument
sections;
e. Heading 5: The heading style for your third level argument
sections;

2. Adding Headers: If you want to add a new section, simply copy


and paste the appropriate header for your issue! That’s it! When
you generate the new Table of Contents, it will automatically
generate your new Headers!

3. Deleting Headers: Similarly, if you want to delete headers, simply


highlight them and delete them.

4. Adding New Sections, Such as Certificate of Compliance or


Notice of Related Cases: Just as before, each Section Header is
formatted so that it will correctly generate on the Table of
Contents.
a. To create a new section, simply copy a header (ex. Statement
of Issues Presented) and paste it in the appropriate section
of your brief. It will correctly display when you generate the
new table of contents.

Changing the Font and Font Size

1. Since all of your heading styles have been predefined, changing


the font is very simple! Simply click on ‘Styles’ and change the
appropriate style to match your needs.
a. Alternatively, if you 12 point font, simply highlight all of the
text and change the font size that way.

Page Numbers

1. Automatic Page Numbering! This is why you bought the brief. No


formatting of page numbers I necessary. The document begins numbering
after the cover page. The numbering begins as lowercase roman numerals,
and automatically switches to traditional Arabic symbols when the brief
begins.
