Addressing Climate Change for the sake of future generations

looks back, I hope they’ll see
that on climate change, we in
New Zealand were on the right

2035.
Last month, in another big milestone, we
launched a world-first agreement between
government and farmers, joining forces to
measure, price, and reduce emissions at the farm

clean electric cars on our roads has tripled
since we came to office and started investing in

We’ve aimed at planting a billion trees over

climate change.
As our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said
recently in Parliament, “We take our nuclear-

This government refuses to accept that the
problem of climate change is too hard to solve.
It may be a long-term challenge, but we need to
start now. If we don’t, it will take longer, cost
more, and be much harder to fix. I’m proud to
side of history...
say that we’ve started making real progress.
Just last week, in what was an historic
moment for New Zealand, we passed the Zero
Carbon Act. It sets up an independent Climate
Change Commission and puts us on a path to
net zero carbon emissions by 2050 as well as
level by 2025. It was great to see politicians and
farmers cooperating to tackle a huge problem
that affects us all.
These actions build on our earlier work of
banning single-use plastic bags, stopped new
permits for offshore oil and gas exploration.
We’ve invested in a clean energy centre in
Taranaki, launched a Green Investment Fund
to help companies move into high-value, low-
emissions industries, boosted the Sustainable
Farming Fund to help farmers create cleaner
farms, and we’re helping clean up our rivers,
streams and lakes.
We’re making big investments in energy
have better insulated, more energy efficient
homes and we’re funding recycling schemes
that will reduce waste across New Zealand.
We will find lasting solutions to our long-
term challenges.
We have a clear and strong plan for
New Zealand’s low-emissions future and
under Jacinda Ardern’s leadership we’re
all determined to do right by our kids and
grandkids.
When the next generation looks back, I hope
they’ll see that on climate change, we in New
Zealand were on the right side of history. That’s
something we can all be proud of.

Takanini Gurudwara hosts 17 hours

of prayers on Guru Purab

hildren, volunteers and
community members came
in thousands to observe the
550th birth anniversary of Guru
Nanak at the Takanini Gurudwara on
Tuesday, November 12.
The prayer session on this
occasion of Guru Purab started
at five in the morning till 10:30
p.m. which included a Sikh Parade
within the Gurudwara complex that
was attended by 400 people in the
morning.
“At 5 a.m., we started the prayer
with the installation of the Shri Guru
Granth Sahib in the prayer hall.
“We had invited people from
different gurudwaras, and community
members joined us in the early
morning prayers and parade, Daljit
Singh from Supreme Sikh Society
told The Indian Weekender.
During the parade, the devotees
sang hymns from the holy book
and walked all around the temple,
chanting the message of Guru Nanak.
During the day, the hosts estimated
eight to ten thousand people visited
the Gurudwara for prayers and
participated in langar with family
and friends.
“On the occasion of this special
event, most of the prayer session
was led by a famous preacher
from Punjab, India, Kathakar Bhai
Sukhbir Singh Kallah who travelled
to Auckland to conduct the prayer
sessions,” Mr Singh said.
The children of the community
actively participated in the kitchen
and langar hall preparing and serving
food to the visitors at the Gurudwara.
“It was amazing to see such an
active participation from the children
of our community who came
forward voluntarily help in running
the activities inside and outside
the gurudwara- preparing, serving
langar to the people and cleaning
and maintaining the space for the
other guests and devotees who were
scheduled to come,” Mr Singh added.
Two Sikh recruits of New Zealand
Defence Force also came to the event
talking to the public about NZDF and
its career opportunities.
“Our community members,
especially youth and children, were
quite drawn by seeing these two
proud men in uniform and enquired
about NZDF and the opportunities
there,” Mr Singh added.
The celebrations ended around
10:30 in the evening, almost 17
hours it started with several prayers
session, kirtan, singing of hymns,
reading the Guru Granth Sahib and
the parade around the complex.
“We had Minister of Ethnic
Communities Jenny Salesa who came
to the event as a guest and rendered a
beautiful speech on multiculturalism
and the contribution of the Sikh
community in New Zealand,” Mr
Singh added.

Corridor last week for its historic
opening ceremony have hailed
the hospitality received from the
Pakistan government there.
Five official delegates and a total
of 43 Sikh members from the New
Zealand Sikh community travelled to
the Kartarpur Corridor in Pakistan on
the occasion of Guru Nanak’s 550th
birth anniversary.
“The delegates told us that the
arrangement made for them was
exemplary and people there are very
generous, respectful and helpful
towards the guests/delegates,” Daljit
Singh, from Supreme Sikh Society
said.
“The message the holy shrine in
Kartarpur has been resounding of
unity, peace and brotherhood.
“The message conveyed through
the event is ‘we all are same, and
there is just one supreme power, one
god, and we should so stay united’,”
Mr Singh said.
The delegates are scheduled to
return on Saturday, November 16
and have praised about the rich
experience being there on this holy
occasion.

The South Auckland Muslim Association
is hosting a National Commemoration of the
birth of Prophet Muhammad on Saturday,
November 17 at Malaeola Community Centre.
The commemoration of the birth of Prophet
Muhammad, or Milad-un-Nabi as it is
commonly known fell on Sunday, November
10 this year and the event is being held to get
community members to observe the day in
commemoration on coming Sunday.
On this occasion, the Muslim community
host special prayers, some fast and recite the
Holy Quran and reiterate the teachings of
Prophet Muhammad.
South Auckland Muslim Association
observes this occasion with a big event every
year calling men, women and children from
the community and discuss and convey the
messages of the prophet for humanity.
The event also invites local MPs, community
leaders from the Muslim and other faiths,
where special prayers are made, children
from Islamic school recite verses from Quran,
poetry, Naath etc.

the economy in the last financial year

efficiently than other construction methods.
Produced by high-profile entrepreneur Peter
Marshall, the co-founder of EFTPOS NZ,
the Nautilus Modular technology is a first for
New Zealand and offers an accessible and
sustainable solution to the nationwide housing
shortage.
“Nautilus Modular was established as an
alternative to conventional building processes,
which are often time-consuming and dependent
on external factors, such as weather and the
availability of labour,” Marshall says. “Off-
site manufacturing is an extremely efficient
method of construction and we believe there
is considerable benefit in what we are offering
in terms of the rapidness that modules can be
produced, transported and installed on site to
form a liveable building.”
The unique connectivity and flexibility of the
Nautilus Modular system creates buildings of
any size and configuration including residential
homes, accommodation, classrooms and
commercial buildings. Modules are produced
in a factory using a special mould, then are
transported to a site. Once connected, the
modules are covered with weather-proofing
materials and clad with corrugated iron. Most
buildings are liveable within one to three days.
The modules can be installed in locations
throughout New Zealand (subject to
environmental conditions) and are a sustainable
solution to traditional building methods. All
modules are dimensionally based on standard
sizes of materials to minimise off-cuts and
wastage.
Nautilus Modular buildings are priced in
the lower-to-middle range of the market, with
prices varying depending on the requirements
of the homeowner or building owner. For
example, the square metre rate for a universal
module is just over $1100 excluding fitout,
installation and cladding, whereas a four-
bedroom home would be approximately $2900
per square metre.
Nautilus Modular has one mould at its
Wanaka testing plant that can produce adequate
modules for a one-bedroom home every 10
days. A factory with five moulds would have
the capacity to produce a one-bedroom house
every eight hours and the company aspires to
have a number of factories across New Zealand
as demand grows.
“This technology is capable of producing
thousands of high-quality homes and buildings
each year,” Marshall adds. “It is quite unlike
anything we have seen before in New Zealand.”
Nautilus Modular will be seeking
certification under the CodeMark Scheme
and will engage in a submission process with
the Ministry of Business, Innovation and
Employment for MultiProof Certification of
the Nautilus Modular design and specification.
While CodeMark provides assurance and
certification for new building products,
Multiproof Certification will greatly assist
Nautilus Modular clients with receiving
building consents from New Zealand councils.

hours of June 5, and were taken on

and Stanley Park – a 1000 acre of

hit hard by hackers: Report
E ducation domain is one of the most “at-risk” industries in India, with the
sector accounting for more than 30 per cent of cyber threats targeting
enterprises in the country between July and September 2019, a new report
from Seqrite, the enterprise arm of IT security firm Quick Heal Technologies,
said.
Other industries that remained at high risk included manufacturing, BFSI
(banking, financial services and insurance), media and entertainment and
professional services -- underlining that no sector remained immune from
the growing cybersecurity challenge in the country.
Between July and September 2019, Seqrite detected and stopped more
than 38 million cyber threats, including ransomware, malware, virus/worm
infectors, cryptojacking and exploit-based attacks.
This marks an increase of four million and 10 million over the number of
threats detected in Q2 2019 and Q1 2019, respectively.
It also marked a massive year-on-year increase of 12 million over the
corresponding numbers in Q2 2018, which saw 26 million threats stopped
by Seqrite.
“In the face of the growing cybersecurity challenge highlighted in the
report, it is important that Indian organisations across industries understand
and acknowledge the heightened severity and sophistication of the threat
landscape,” said Sanjay Katkar, Joint Managing Director and Chief
Technology Officer, Quick Heal Technologies.
Robots to help Indian Army fight terror in Kashmir
F rom helping in cordon-and-search ops, negotiating obstacles to lobbing
grenades at terrorists holed up in buildings, the Indian Army will
soon have robots to help it in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu
and Kashmir.
The Ministry of Defence
has started the process
of procuring around 550
robotics surveillance units
with minimum 25 years
of service life for counter-
insurgency ops in Jammu
and Kashmir, sources said
on Wednesday.
A senior Indian Army
officer said that these
robots should be capable of climbing stairs and negotiating obstacles apart
from throwing grenades at terrorists in built-up areas. “These robots should
be capable enough for water fording with minimum 20-cm depth,” the
officer said. During cordon-and-search-operations in the Valley, these robots
will be the first line of defence, thus helping prevent casualties. “This would
avoid casualty to our own troops during initial breach by terrorists,” the
officer said. The ministry has on November 19 called the Indian industries
to make representations of their products about robotics surveillance. The
ministry is pushing for indigenization to reduce dependence on imports of
defence items.
The ministry has initiated the process of procuring on request of
the Directorate General of Rashtriya Rifles, the country’s premier
counterinsurgency force raised on October 1, 1990 when militancy in Jammu
and Kahmir was at its peak and the local law enforcement and paramilitary
agencies were unable to contain it. The force is exclusively engaged in
counter-terror operations in the Valley.

Planet, says a new study.
The rover's Jezero
crater landing site is home
to deposits of hydrated
silica, a mineral that just happens to be particularly good
at preserving biosignatures, said the study published in the
journal Geophysical Research Letters.
"Using a technique we developed that helps us find rare,
hard-to-detect mineral phases in data taken from orbiting
spacecraft, we found two outcrops of hydrated silica within
Jezero crater," said the study's lead author Jesse Tarnas.
"We know from Earth that this mineral phase is exceptional
at preserving microfossils and other biosignatures, so
that makes these outcrops exciting targets for the rover to
explore," Tarnas said.
NASA announced late last year that its Mars 2020 rover
would be headed to Jezero, which appears to have been
home to an ancient lake. The star attraction at Jezero is a
large delta deposit formed by ancient rivers that fed the lake.

Conservative Party if it wins the upcoming general election.
The health service budget would rise to £155 bn by 2023-
24 -- £6bn more than the Conservatives promised the front-

5-year plan last year, the BBC reported.
Labour said the money would "boost mental health
services". Labour has said it would aim to shift Britain
towards a 32-hour working-week. The party said it would
be phased in over 10 years so would not have impact on the
NHS budget, as claimed by the Tories.
The average UK full-time working week is 42.5 hours as
compared to an EU average of 41.2, according to statistics
body Eurostat.
'Ghost' footprints hiding since
end of Ice Age found
U sing a special type of radar, researchers have discovered
the invisible footprints hiding since the end of the last
ice age – and what lies beneath them.
The fossilised footprints reveal a wealth of information
about how humans and animals moved and interacted
with each other 12,000 years ago, according to the study
published in the journal Scientific Reports.
"We never thought to look under footprints, but it turns
out that the sediment itself has a memory that records the
effects of the animal's weight and momentum in a beautiful
way," said study lead author Thomas Urban from Cornell
University in the US. "It gives us a way to understand the
biomechanics of extinct fauna that we never had before,"
Urban said. The researchers examined the footprints of
humans, mammoths and giant sloths in the White Sands
National Monument in New Mexico. Using ground-
penetrating radar (GPR), they were able to resolve 96 per
cent of the human tracks in the area under investigation, as
well as all of the larger vertebrate tracks.
E-cigarettes more harmful to heart than
tobacco: Study

R esearchers have found that electronic nicotine delivery

systems, such as e-cigarettes might be just as harmful
to the heart, than traditional cigarettes.
"Our results suggest that e-cigarette use is associated with
coronary vascular dysfunction at rest, even in the absence
of physiologic stress, these findings indicate the opposite of
what e-cigarette and vaping marketing is saying about their
safety profile," said study researcher Susan Cheng, Director
of Public Health Research at the Smidt Heart Institute.
A recent study by the US Food and Drug Administration
found that 27.5 per cent of high school students used
e-cigarettes in 2019, as compared to 20.8 per cent in 2018.
The study also estimates that in 2018, around 3.62 million
middle and high school students were e-cigarette users.
For the current findings, the team of researchers compared
healthy, young adult smokers aged 18 to 38 who were regular
users of e-cigarettes or tobacco cigarettes.

FOR RICE:
• 1cup - rice
• 1 - onion, large
• 1tsp - garlic paste
• 11/2cup - chicken broth or stock
• 1cup - hot water
• 1tsp - salt
• 2tbsp - oil
• 2tbsp - fresh chopped parsley to garnish
METHOD
• In a large bowl, add olive oil, parsley, red chilli powder,
thyme, salt and pepper. Mix well.
• Add chicken pieces and coat each piece evenly with the
masala mixture, cover and keep aside allowing the flavours to
absorb into the chicken for at least 30 minutes.
• Heat oven to 180degree c.

for such a media and academic
study group that would put you in

Palestinian and Arab-Israeli society.
Recently a small New Zealand

travelled to one of the most volatile
geopolitical hot-beds in the world
