CONTEST
DBFC PROPOSAL LETTER
Objective
We are students of University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore and
participating in the Design, Build and Fly Contest, 2011 (DBFC) to be held at
Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI)
DBFC INTRODUCTION
GIKI is holding the 6h National Design, Build and Fly Competition (DBFC-V) in
2011; after the success of five National Design, Build and Fly Competitions which were
held in GIKI in 2006, 2007, 2008 ,2009and 2010 . DBFC is a nationwide competition,
organized by the GIKI Student Chapter of American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics (AIAA), in collaboration with STEM Careers Programme
AIAA GIKI Chapter and GIK Institute through the STEM Careers
Programme and HEC invite undergraduate students to participate in the
6th National Design, Build & Fly Competition. The competition will
provide a real world aircraft design experience for engineering students by
giving them the opportunity to validate their analytic studies.
Student teams will design, fabricate, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an
unmanned electric/engine powered, radio controlled aircraft that can best meet the
specified mission profile. The goal is to make a balanced design that possesses good
flight handling qualities and must be practical and affordable.
Team Introduction
Our Team comprises of members from Mechanical engineering department and volunteers from
three major departments of UET Lahore namely Electrical, computer and Mechatronics. Thus by
combining the knowledge, proficiency and expertise of each member and volunteer from different
departments, we have created a diversified team that has far more likelihood of designing and
building a superior radio controlled aircraft than any other team of BSc engineering students.
Moreover the team members are all 3rd year students dedicated to the project and in their quest
of learning are willing to give their utmost to this project. We have already made RC-plane in last
year in ASME project competition . Following is a brief introduction of the team members.
Amer Ali
Have won best creative award in 2010 ASME U.E.T
competition ,best presenter of ASME U.E.T Lahore 2010
Syeda Zahra: Assistant Manager Safety and Risk Analysis Section
ASME, UET
Editor ASME Pakistan Newsletters
Ali Raza: worked in aerospace section of ASME U.E.T Lahore ,
Awais Khan: have worked in Fluid Mechanics section of ASME U.E.T
Lahore
Rizwan ali : 1st position in general knowledge quiz held at faislabad in
2007
Project Idea Details:
Our Team aims at both designing and fabricating a radio controlled plane for
participating in this National Competition and also at understanding the aerodynamics of
aircraft modeling and researching into different aspects of it.
Keeping in mind the information and mission plans provided by the organizers of DBFC
competition; we have planned to work on following few things using our knowledge like
fabricating our own radio control remote along with the RC plane etc
Remote Control
Research
we will make our design with the help of Auto cad ,Pro-E and solid Edge We will
research on aerofoil design of the RC plane and conduct different wind tunnel
tests using the facilities provided by UET, Lahore which has lab fully equipped for
this purpose.other than usual wind tunnel tests to understand the lift and drag
coefficient’s relation with Reynolds no. and angle of attack it is important to use
the new techniques. using softwares designed by NASA for computing of
aerodynamic properties such as Foilsim and AlphaTrainer
Sponsorship packages:
Following is the team estimate for the project expenses on making an RC plane for
participation in DBFC 6, going to be held at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute, Sawabi. We
will need a total of 100,000 PKR for this project.
