1. PROPOSED PUERTO PRINCESA HEALTH CENTER : Enhancing Tuberculosis Patient Detection and Care
Through The Influence of a Curative Environment on Modernist Design And Architecture
When illness strikes and there is no one to turn to for help, people are tempted to resort to illegal
means for remedy. For farmers and fishermen, for example, the seas and the forests become attractive
sources of fast buck. To dispel the temptation, the City Government has undertaken effective and
efficient health services.
Robert Koch discovered the tubercle bacillus in 1882. As germ theory became better understood,
medical professionals knew that isolation was key to prevent the spread of tuberculosis. A person’s best
hope for recovery was to live somewhere with plenty of fresh air, sunlight, rest, and nourishing food.
The standard of care for TB was primarily environmental—and the design of sanatoria influenced
Modernist architecture.
It used to be that the people in the barangays did not have access to medical services. The minimum
time of travel from the nearest barangay to Puerto Princesa, where most health services are accessible,
is an hour. Aside from that, there are rough roads and the frequency of transportation is two times
daily. As a result, many people do not seek medical care, resort to quack medicine, or visit doctors only
when their sickness has already become worse. Sadly, others die without getting treated or while
waiting for transport to take them to the hospital.
One of the biggest problems bedeviling the city’s rural population, composed mostly of farmers and
fishermen, was how to cope with illness which was not really that infrequent considering their economic
and living conditions. Even if one had the money, he would still have to contend with the problem of
transport. If one had none, he was literally helpless. There was no government to run to for help. Many
of them died without even seeing a doctor, others while even waiting for the jeepney to arrive.
“In the year 2015, this representation authored a resolution requesting Mayor Lucilo Bayron to direct
the City Health Office (CHO) to conduct a study regarding the possibility of putting up a City Hospital in
Puerto Princesa,” he said in his sponsorship speech.
Maristela added that both the ONP and the Multipurpose Cooperative Hospital (MCH) are catering to
patients way beyond their bed capacity.
The MCH, on the other hand, has a 120-bed capacity as approved by the Department of Health but is
likewise overflowing with patients, he said.
Objectives:
1.Make medicines and medical care accessible to rural residents
2.Reduce the rate of mortality in the rural areas
3.Decrease the rate of unnecessary suffering due to illness
SWOT ANALYSIS
Strength:
The city has never been hit by a major earthquake in the last 500 years. This gives someone something
that money can’t buy: peace of mind. Seldom visited by typhoons, it is shielded by eastern Philippine
islands from the Pacific side.
Weakness:
Opportunity:

4. Resort in Palawan: Naturopathic healing center beach resort Through The Influence of a Curative
Environment on Modernist Design And Architecture
The goal of this thesis is to design a space that can support spirituality and sustain happiness in such a
way that when passing through and spending time in one such space one would feel different from
when they entered. Nature has a catalyst role in the project and will be introduced into the space to
settle people’s mind and to realize the benefits of practicing Dharma. The project which is integrated
with nature while providing a meditative environment for people to learn, contemplate, and to validate
the Dharma. It also emphasizes the development of wisdom, facilitating a connection between
spirituality, art, and sense of place.
I would like to design a Naturopathic Healing Center. This center will focus upon two primary ideas, the
first is the Philosophy; and principles of naturopathic medicine and the second focuses on how nature
can aid the healing process. This facility will offer a unique environment in which patients can seek care
that a normal hospital would not offer. The medical care given will follow the principles of naturopathic
medicine as will the architecture of the facility. It will also respond to and interact with the natural
environment. The site will need to offer opportunities for the patient to interact with nature so as to
provide a calming environment in which healing can take place. A facility of this type also needs a strong
connection to a community. This connection will offer a rich interaction from which both can benefit.
The Naturopathic Healing Center will not compete with western medicine. It will become an asset to
western medicine. Naturopathic medicine is a branch of alternative medicine, which proposes that there
is a healing power in the body that establishes, maintains, and restores health. Practitioners work with
the patient with a goal of supporting this power, through treatments. Naturopathic medicine can be
described as, "a distinctively natural approach to health and healing that recognizes the integrity of the
whole person. Naturopathic medicine emphasizes the treatment of disease through the stimulation,
enhancement, and support of the inherent healing capacity of the person. Methods of treatments are
chosen to work with the patient's vital force, respecting the intelligence of the natural healing process."

REHABILITATION CENTER
Project renewal and recovery from drugs or "PRRD" aims to involve the community to participate in
the rehabilitation of drug users.
To date, 3,771 drug users and pushers have surrendered in Palawan in line with the PNP's Project
Double Barrel. At least 400 of those who surrendered came from the municipality of Brooke's Point.
Palawan currently doesn't have a functional rehabilitation center to cater to them, and only pre-
rehabilitation activities have been provided.
Atty. Kristal Padon-Rabanal, one of the volunteers, said that the project will ask the community to
take the lead in helping drug users in rehabilitation. This process, according to her, will hopefully
benefit both those who surrendered and the community.
Under the project, drug dependents will undergo several activities such as sports and community
services for re-integration and values formation.
Once they graduate from the program, the group will then work to remove the graduates name from
the PNP drug list.
After Brooke's Point, the group aims to introduce the program to the other municipalities in Palawan,
including Puerto Princesa City.
