Section 1

Hannah Lee is from the Seattle area and grew up admiring her parents, grandparents, and
friends for everything they did for her and their families. During high school, she was on her
school’s swim team, winning a relay at state finals her senior year. She wishes that she had more
time to read—from fiction to Stephen Hawkings, she isn’t picky—and hike, which was one of
her favorite activities to do with her friends in high school. In her free time, she folds origami
and plays the piano. Hannah has always wanted to try skiing, skydiving, and backpacking; her
love of hiking has inspired her to look for more intense activities that encompass similar
elements. An undeclared Engineering major, Hannah wants to be in the Human Centered Design
and Engineering major, which focuses on human computer interaction. She is irked by the
thought of widening global inequality, especially in regards to technology, and hopes to be a part
of the solution.
Section 2
In accordance with her interests, I found her some clubs I think would interest Hannah.
Since swim team was one of her favorite parts of high school, I decided to see if the University
of Washington had any swim teams. Unfortunately, they do not. However, when I was talking to
my friend’s roommate, she mentioned that there was a group of people trying to start a swim
club/team who practiced at the IMA. I think this would be an excellent activity for Hannah to do
since she loved swimming so much in high school. When we talked about expanding our
horizons and trying new skills, Hannah mentioned skiing and outdoor activities such as hiking or
backpacking. I used the RSO directory to find the Hiking Club at UW
(hikingclubatuw@gmail.com), which I believe is an appropriate fit because it welcomes people
of all skill levels and might introduce her to people who know more about backpacking. In the
last few weeks, I have seen a table for Husky Winter Sports in the Red Square. When Hannah
mentioned skiing, I thought that HWS might be a good opportunity for her to learn how to ski.
Through their facebook page, I found out that HWS offers ski and snowboard lessons. I think
HWS would introduce Hannah to people who want to do more skiing and give her the skills she
needs to do so safely.
Section 3
Through this assignment, I realized how much I want to be able to play sports again. I
really enjoyed playing sports throughout high school and have not had the opportunity to do as
much in college. I also realized how much I enjoy helping people. This self-reflection made me
realize how much I miss working with children with special needs and, as a result, I have started
to consider starting a program similar to Angels on Stage in Seattle. I have already met many
people who would be capable of helping me with these endeavors and, while I wouldn’t know
where to start, I know that I want to be apart of something that makes a change in people’s lives.
As I was pooling together my resources, I began to listen closely for more of what others were
saying. While in class, I heard some girls talking about soccer and joined their conversation.
They told me that they played small 3v3 matches on Friday for fun and invited me to join them.
Throughout the process of looking for activities for Hannah, I have found that one of the most
effective ways to find activities you want to join is by talking to other people, even if you don’t
know them too well. I also used the assignment to look closer at Facebook pages for UW student
organizations and activities. I do not have a huge presence on Facebook, but I will consider
accessing it more to
