Driver Installation
The driver software distribution comprises 8 files. These files must be copied to the DeltaV directory on
your ProPlus Workstation. The path is:
\DeltaV\ctl\ProgSerial\IOD-1106 RiceLake
Note that you will have to create the \IOD-1106 RiceLake subdirectory. The following files will be copied:
After copy completion, you are ready to program (or upgrade) the Programmable Serial Card with the
supplied custom driver software. The steps are as follows:

The Programmable Serial Card can also be used to communicate with the Weigh Scales using RS-485
Half or Full Duplex. The following is an RS-485 hookup, with 1 weigh scale per port. The distance
between the serial card and the weigh scale can be as much as 5000 feet, per the RS-485 standard.
Select the communications parameters as configured in the Weigh Scale.

It may be possible to multi-drop a maximum of eight (8) weigh scales from a single port on a serial card.
This would depend on whether the devices can be addressed uniquely. Such a hookup would be as
follows. Select the communications parameters as configured in the Weigh Scales.

Port Configuration
Configured ports as Master or Slave. Retry Count, Message Timeout and Transmit Delay can be left as
default or changed at users’ discretion. Configure the Port Type as RS232 or RS485 Half Duplex. For
Slave ports, RS232 is required. RS485 can be used for distance and multi-dropped connectivity. In
Master mode, the driver will poll the Weigh Scale.
Device Configuration
Configure one device for each Weigh Scale. In case of multi-dropped connectivity, the device address will
be used in the poll message. The device addresses should match the Scale address. Each device
requires 2 datasets.
Dataset Direction DeltaV Data Type Device Data Type Number of Values
Number
1 Input Floating Point with Status 0 10
2 Input UINT8 with Status 0 100
Special Data
Not used.
Special Data
1 Scale channel number. This is used in the command sent, eg, XG#n, where n is the
channel number.
2 Bit 0 - Termination Selection. Based on Scale Indicator Port "TERMIN" selection.
=0 Use <CR>, =1 Use <CR><LF>
Bit 1 - Poll command prefix. Based on Scale Indicator Port "PortType" selection.
=0 No prefix - if PortType is RS232 or RS422
=1 Use <STX><Scale Addr> - if PortType is RS485. The Scale Addr is the Device
Address configured in DeltaV.

Driver Communications
If the port is configured as Slave, then no commands are sent from the Serial Card to the Weigh Scale.
The Serial Card simply receives the data packets, parses them out and makes the data available to
DeltaV in the configured registers. This is known as the “Continuous” Mode of the Weigh Scales. In this
mode, transmission occurs at the end of each display update.
If the port is configured as Master, then the Serial Card will send out a poll command to the Weigh Scale.
The Serial Card then receives the response data packets, parses them out and makes the data available
to DeltaV in the configured registers.
If there are communication errors, these are reported up to DeltaV. Errors are of two types:
Each weigh scale will always have only the following registers configured:
1 – LBS
2 – KGS
1 – LBS
2 – KGS

The bits are defined in order of priority, with bit 0 being the highest priority. A value of 0 indicates normal
status.
The Error Code byte represents errors detected in the received messages. Most of these errors could be
a result of mismatched communication parameters. These are defined as follows:
<D>,<A>,<I>,<O>,<M>,<Z>,<X>,<Y>,<SP>
106 Invalid polarity. The valid polarity indication is given
by <–> for negative numbers and space for positive
number. The received character did not match either.

The driver communicates with these scales in Master mode only. In this mode, a periodic poll message is
sent requesting Gross, Net and Tare data as given by the following commands. The n in the command
represents the Scale channel number, specified in Special Data 1. The poll message is terminated with
<CR> or <CR><LF> as specified in Special Data 2 Bit 0. The resulting response data is stored in Dataset
1 and 2 registers as follows:
Units
The Weigh scale returns units as an ASCII string. The driver converts the string to numeric for reporting in
Dataset 2. The values are as follows:
lb Pounds 1
kg Kilograms 2
g Grams 3
gr Grains 4
oz Ounces 5
oz t Troy Ounce 6
lb t Troy Pounds 7
t Tons 8
tn Short Ton 9
lt Long Ton 10
custom Custom 11
None No configured units 0
Unknown units 99
