CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

To go ahead with the advancement of education system, Department of

Education (DepEd) together with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)

implemented K-12 program that will gear up and prepare students in facing the

ever-changing world.

Through the education program, from only four-year study (1st year to 4th

year), students graduated in primary school would spend six more years to finish

secondary school (Grade 7 to Grade 12) and eventually go to college.

Undeniably, due to the implementation of K-12 program, an addition of

two year-study in high school which called as Senior High School, learners today

set practicality as a necessity. Students preferred to be wise enough in making

own decision about education path. In so, learning will be convenient and

affordable.

School- as one of the prioritized thing of one learner heading to Senior

High School, the researchers, in response, seeks for the possible factors need to

be considered in choosing a learning institute.

4
By conducting the study, the researchers will create a guide for the future

students of what elements should be determine once headed to Grade 11 and

12. Hereto, not only the School Government involved by the said research but

also other education institution will be informed and formally suggest an action

prior to demand and needs of the learners by means of improving facilities,

governance and educational system.

In this sense, students will be benefited same way as the school progress.

This research aims for the school improvement in terms of their services

facilities and in their performance that will benefit the Parents, Teachers, school,

students, and also the future student. Through this research the school will meet

the expectation of the students for their own sake.

Every school has its own uniqueness, and that is the reason why a student

is choosing the school that they like. Encouraging not only students, but also the

parent is one of the things that the school is preparing in the incoming school

year. Different freebies and promos that the school is offering to the students, is

why they are encouraged to enrol.

Choosing Senior High School is a difficult part of life for the student,

because it will decide what their future going to be. There are different factors

that may affect the student’s choice of Senior High School.

The researchers Vallente M, Cleo Bernadette M. Albia, Ian Jephonie

Gayosa, John Michael Vincent Dollaga, Kaiser Vim Noblea, Marcho, students of

Bukidnon State University conducted a research about Factors Influencing

Student's Choice for a Senior High School Academic Track last March 2006.

According to them, there are different factors that influenced the student’s

11
choice of senior high school Academic Track of Bukidnon State University during

the school year 2015-2016.

The researchers first find their population. Grade 10 students of Bukidnon

State University are the population of the researchers. There are so many grade

10 students of Bukidnon State University, so that the researchers used a fishing

bowl method in choosing their subjects in doing an experiment. The researchers

decided that they are going to use a survey form of experiment. Using a

Quantitative type of research, they present the data numerically and analyse

the data that shows the factors influencing the student’s choice for a senior high

school Academic Track.

Recommendation of others, friends, peer encouragement and family

background has a moderate influence in taking the course. Aside from those

factors, the students also considered their parents as the factor influencing their

choice for a Senior High School Academic Track. Because they want their

parents to be proud of them, and that will achieve if the students will attain a

high grade, so they are going to choose a strand that they have background or

that is easy for them to handle. Seeing their parents proud and happy will boost

their confidence in study, and also help them achieve their dreams. Those are

the result of the research of the researchers entitled Factors Influencing Student's

Choice for a Senior High School Academic Track.

12
Factors Affecting Grade 10 Students in Choosing Their Preferred Tracks for

Senior High School is a research that Cervera, Ma. Adriah Therese D. Divino,

Daniel Fil B. Verjom, Syluck Joseph B. conducted last March 2016.

The researchers aimed to know the Factors Affecting Grade 10 Students in

Choosing Their Preferred Tracks for Senior High School of the University of the

Immaculate Conception Bajada, Davao City. The researchers target the first

batch of the K-12 program in the Philippines that will graduate on March 2018.

The first step that the researchers did is to know how many is the girl and boy in

grade 10 in the University of the Immaculate Conception, because the

researchers believed that the gender is one of the factors that affects the

decision making of students.

The researchers used a survey using the questionnaires that they made,

and validated by their project advisers. These survey questionnaires are the way

to achieving the results of this study. The researchers went to every classrooms of

the grade 10 students of the University of the Immaculate Conception to

conduct their survey with 172 respondents. Each questionnaire had 4 indicators

with 6 statements each. The four indicators were Parental Influence, Interests,

Aptitude, and Environmental Factors. The respondents only had to rate each

statement from 1 to 5. With the use of the T-test method, with0.05 margin of error,

the researchers were able to determine the demographic profile of the

respondents of grade 10 students in terms of gender.

13
With results that the researchers attain, they conclude that The

Factor affecting the students in choosing their preferred track in terms of

Parental influence, Aptitude, Interests, and Environmental Factors all had a

descriptive equivalent of High. This shows that the influence of parents, the

aptitude of the students, their interests, and factors that are from their

surroundings all play a big role in the student’s choice for their preferred track in

senior high school. The researcher’s rate the result based on the numerical data

that they gathered. The greatest factor is the interests of the students, followed

by environmental factors, next is their aptitude and then the influence of their

parents.

Those are the related studies to the topic of the researchers in local.

Foreign

The schools of Senior High School in other country are so different. One

factor of it is their culture, because culture of one country is different to the

culture of other country. The K-12 program started in other country and the

Philippines government decided to adopt it, for the Filipinos to keep up to other

country.

Implementation of education projects is mainly focused if student’s needs

for career development and schools are the key factors affecting students’

career. A sentence came from the research Factors students’ school

background variables include the school size and school location that the

14
researcher’s Ming-Shang Su, Ta-Chung Chang, Chin-Chang Wu, and Chin-Wen

Liao conducted.

In 1993, Department of Secondary Education, Ministry of Education

implemented the trial “Technique Arts Education Plan in Junior High Schools”; in

2001, the technique arts education policy by the letter of “Technique Arts

Education Reform Plan”, and to expect to guide students with lower

performance or willingness for further study who can take the technique arts

education program according to their interests and willingness , and then assist

them in obtaining basic skills and practical knowledge Therefore, this study is

tended to understand the current status of junior high schools students with

taking the technique arts education program that their career decision-making

after graduation, which is also the first research motivation of the researcher’s

study.

According to Ching-Wen Lin, the factors affecting career plan are:

students’ school background variables include the school size and school

location. Therefore, this study is investigated these related personal, group,

school and career exploration factors that affecting junior high school students

of technique arts education program for their career decision-making, and this is

the second research motivation of this study.

The main object of this study the those junior high schools students in

Taichung City, Changhua County and Nantou County who participated in

15
academic year 2013 cooperative technique arts education program. There are

108 junior high schools within these 3 cities and counties that joined to the

cooperative technique arts education program with establishing 215 classes

and total 5,483 participants as the population of survey.

This study used the stratified random sampling to sample students from

total 16 junior high schools in central Taiwan areas (including Taichung City,

Changhua County and Nantou County) who participated in cooperative

technique arts education program, with sending out 600 copies of

questionnaire, and 568 copies returned with a questionnaire return rate of

94.67%. After eliminating 51 invalid copies, there’re 517 valid copies with a valid

return rate of 86.17%.

The result of the research only states that there are different factors

affecting students’ school background variables include the school size and

school location. It may because of personal background and family

background. Aside from that, the researchers also discovered that students’

school background variables include the school size and school location that

Mr. Ching-Wen Lin stated.

The researcher’s Bodhe-Surally Kaneez and Kristo Medha conducted a

research entitled Factors Influencing Grade 10 Student’s Career Choice in

Mauritius, published last May 16, 2018 in India.

16
The researcher’s main reason is for the people of Mauritius to have the

right skill and qualification to join the services and the knowledge economy,

because there is rapid growth in the socio-economic in Mauritius, and it results

the increase need of people to have different skill.

There are those people that conducted a study about the same topic in

the same place.

The Korir and Wafula (2012) study attempt to examine the influential

factors in student career choice among students undertaking hospitality

management in Moi University. Using the stratified and systematic random

sampling techniques with a sample of 120 students, the findings show that

majority of students are influenced by opportunity (technical schools and job

opening) followed by environmental factors (external influencers and

advertisements made by institution) while least influenced by personal factors

(personal interest and lifestyle of those who are already in the hospitality

industry). They also point out that students opted, selected and preferred

hospitality careers despite many other alternatives that were open to them. The

study also reveals that academic setting, access to the institution, course entry

level, family tradition, income, industry conducts, job placements, job

shadowing do not influence their choice of hospitality career.

Shumba and Naong (2012) among 133 South African university students to

explore factors influencing career choice and aspirations, confirms that family,

17
the ability of the learner self to identify his/her preferred career choice, and

teachers are among the most influencing factors in career choice and

aspirations of students. The study also find that career choices are decided long

before the leaners come to universities. Very few students change their study

program since these learners knew what they intended to study after

completing their Grade 12. They also point out that once the students have got

their first choice of what they wanted to pursue in their studies, they also make

their career choices. Moreover, using a sample of 100 respondents from five

secondary schools in Ogun State, Olamide and Olawaiye (2013) confirm that

environment, influence and opportunity factors influence student’s career

choice.

The study of Obiunu and Ebunu (2013) attempt to examine factors

affecting career choice in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.

Based on a sample size of 60 secondary school students, the authors find that

situational factors, environment factors and educational factors affect students

career choice positively. Personality factors and economics factors had no

effect on career choice.

In a recent study of Ooro et at (2017) attempts to determine the factors

influencing the career choice among 231 students in Business and Economics in

Kisii University. Using a stratified random sampling, the study reveals that gender

is the most influencing factor to career choice, followed by age. Students point

18
out that factors of career experience affect their career choice. The student

develops an interest in a previous career before training. The study also reveals

that expected financial reward motivates the students in choosing a specific

career based on the salary they are expecting on the time of employment.

The researchers did their own experiment just like the past researchers.

The researchers use a descriptive survey research design. They design a

questionnaire to collect data among students of the fourth year of secondary

education in Mauritius. The researchers divided the questionnaire into three

sections. The first section focuses on the general profile of the student. In the

second section, respondents were asked about their subject choice while the

third section contains questions about assessment of their subject choice. A

sample of 400 students in Grade 10 was randomly chosen to fill the

questionnaires. To determine factors influencing students’ subject choice based

on parent point of view, the ranking and scoring will be used, where ranking

basically means positioning numerous options in order of importance, value or

preference while scoring means assigning values to different options, based on

some convenient scale.

According to the result of the survey that the researchers conducted, they

conclude that the Factors Influencing Grade 10 Student’s Career Choice in

Mauritius is their needs. They want to lessen the unemployment rate so that they

are going to take the strand or course that is suited to their skills. It will not only

19
benefit the country but also themselves, because they help their family to be

success in life.

Those are the research that is related to the topic of the researchers in

foreign.

CHAPTER III

METHOD AND PROCEDURES

This chapter presents the methods to use in the study. It also describes the

subject of the study, the procedure of data gathering and statistical treatment

of the data.

This study will determine the factors that affect the decision making of

STEM 11 students in choosing Bestlink College of the Philippines-Bulacan Branch.

Method of Research

The researchers will use a quantitative research and descriptive research

to show the result of decision making of STEM 11 in choosing Bestlink College of

the Philippine- Bulacan Branch for their senior high school (SY 2019-2020).

First the researchers will use a quantitative research because the way the

researchers will show a result and data through investigation and computational

techniques to get the holistic view of the characteristic of the subjects that is

going to make the decision in choosing Bestlink College of the Philippines-

Bulacan Branch in their senior high school and also the researchers will use a

descriptive research, descriptive research means describing the research by

means of words .the researcher sees that using descriptive type of research is

much more easy to understand and it can help them to explain easily their

research for more convenience.

21
Subject of the Study

A total of 27 students of Stem 11 at the Bestlinck College of the Philippines-

Bulacan Branch are the respondents of our study. 19 of the respondents are

male while the remaining 8 are female. They are the one who have enough

knowledge to answer the problems pose in our study. The said respondents will

answer the questionnaires that we will give to them which supply the information

that needed. The STEM 11 is the subject of the research because they are new

students in Bestlink College of the Philippines-Bulacan Branch and the

researchers want to know what are the things that they liked about school that

pushed them to enrol, so that if it is related to the factors that affect the decision

making of STEM 11 in choosing Bestlink College of the Philippines-Bulacan

Branch.

Each answer will be computed based on their similarities. The students

who have the most answer will be compared to those who get the least

common answers.

The researchers will ask three questions to the Grade 11 students

regarding to what are the factors that affect their decision making in choosing

Senior High School, and listed or record all the data that the researchers will be

using to determine what are the common factors that affects the decision

making of Grade 11 students.

22
Description of Research Instrument

This part of study shows the instruments that the researchers used in order

to attain the expected results. The researchers decided to use the two types of

structural research instrument which are the survey form and test questionnaire.

Using survey form, the researchers used their experience to know what the

possible factors are affecting the decision making of STEM 11 in choosing Bestlink

College of the Philippines-Bulacan Branch. Through survey and interview, the

researchers will easily gain the possible percentage of every reason that the

researchers may receive from the STEM 11 students.

The second and last instrument that the researchers used is the test

questionnaire. The researchers add questions that is not listed on the possible

factors or benefits that the Bestlink College of the Philippines-Bulacan Branch

can give to the Grade 11 students that can help the study determine the factors

that affect the decision making of STEM 11 in choosing Bestlink College of the

Philippines-Bulacan Branch.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will get permission to the adviser of STEM 11 to conduct a

survey for the researchers study. They will gather information about free time of

STEM 11. At 5 pm, the researchers will start to survey at STEM 11.

23
The researchers prepare 3 questions to be answered by the respondents.

They will write the questions to Manila paper and post it to the board. The

subject will provide their own piece of paper use to answer the given questions.

The researchers will ask questions with choices according to what the

school can give like freebies, 3 days of class, free events, strand and other that

affect their decision. There will be a question where the respondents will be

choosing to “yes” and “no” and if their answer is no they have to give reason of

it. For rating the Bestlink Collegeof the Philippines-Blacan Branch, there are three

choices; very good, good and bad.

They will do a documentation while the respondents answering the

questions.

Right after the respondents answered the given questions, the researchers
will collect the paper where the respondents answered.

24
Statistical Treatment Applied

The researchers used the random sampling, because they let everyone in

the population to have a chance answer the given questions and give their

thoughts about it. The researchers get the mean value or the average value of

the question number 1, with a formula of:

After getting the mean value, the researchers used the mean value to get

the difference between the X (population) and the mean. They divide the

answer of it to itself: (X-mean)^2, and get the summation of it to and compute

for the Variance.

The last thing that the researchers do is to get the Standard Deviation of

the answers. To get the Standard Deviation, you only need to square root the

Variance.

25
The researchers didn’t use formula to the questions that is left, because

they are only observing to the answers of the respondents.

As what the researchers stated on the Background of the study, the Department

of Education (DepEd) together with Commission on Higher Education

implemented an additional two years in Secondary Education called The K to 12

Program. In response on its consequences beyond benefits, learners set

practicality as necessity. This means that students should be wise enough in

making own decision about their education path.

This statement was proved by the conducted research as the test questionnaire

and survey says that the most factor which affect the one student to choose a

school for senior highschool is the school's offer and benefits which is associated

33
with the term “Freebies". This reflects the students being practical in considering

things for education. From this, the finance, time and efforts that the students

exert will use in a practical manner.

On the other hand, according to the study, 85.19% answered "YES" after asking if

the Bestlink College of the Philippines (BCP) reach their ( the respondents)

expectation. But still there is 14.81% "NO", who thought that the said college

failed to achieve what they want to look forward. This includes proper

ventilation for classrooms, a good learning environment that are free from

external distractions geared with accuctomed educators. Due to this data, the

researchers could conclude that, to be able to completely achieve the

expectation of its earners, the said learning institution should continue to use a

direct time and efforts for improvement in order to achieve this goal.

However, on the basis of respondent's rate to BCP, in conformity with their own

standard, the school got its highest rate of good (among the ratings: Very

Good, Good and Bad). This rate stems to the idea that the school really should

suggest actions about the factors that held other students for answering "NO".

Recommendation

This study is highly recommended to the future Senior High School

students, for them to have a guide in choosing their school. They have different

qualities for their choosing school, so that this study will help them to know what

34
school they are going to, with the use of this research: Factors Affecting the

Decision Making of STEM 11 in Choosing Bestlink College of the Philippines-

Bulacan Branch for their Senior High School (S.Y 2019-2020).

This will also help the parents. They are the one who support the student

financially so, this research will help them to be more practical in choosing

school for their child, by knowing the factors of students in choosing their Senior

High School, this will help them lessen their expenses and support their child for

their Senior High School.

The school will be benefited in this study. By knowing the factors that the

student chose in this study, they will engage to make improvements for the

students and also the heads of the schools; they may get a high rating in terms

of school performance, which includes the teaching skills, facilities and the

programs. With the improvement of the school, the students will also get

affected; they may do a better performance in their academic and other

activities in school.

The last person that the researchers recommend this study is the future

researchers. This will help them to have background information about their

research about factors affecting the decision making of Senior High School and

guide them in doing a research study.
