Announcement for Global South Members

There were deliberations during the DSA 2019 conference for the need to have global South
members of DSA who are also residents in global South as members of DSA Council. The reason
for this is to give adequate representation to members in the global South at the DSA Council.

In this regard, the Council acknowledged the importance of having representation of global
South members on Council, therefore it was agreed by the Council to have two representatives
of global South members in the Council. These persons will be chosen through an online election
which will be held amongst global South members.

It is therefore being announced for the information of members from global South who have the
interest, passion to serve and time to sacrifice to look out for the call for nominations on the
DSA website and present themselves for the election. We also encourage all global South
members to participate in the online election when the time is due.

Robtel Pailey - DSA2019 Keynote paper - Open access

An expanded version of Robtel Pailey’s 2019 Development Studies Association conference
keynote was recently published in the journal Development and Change. In the spirit of 'opening
up development', it is open access for the next six months.

‘Meeting the Challenges’ workshop series

Our recent workshop series co-funded by ESRC aimed to understand better the opportunities for
and barriers to cross-disciplinary, international research, exploring global challenges such as
water, urban development, poverty and climate change. Videos and reports from the workshops
are available on the DSA website

The convenors of the seven workshops came together at the DSA Conference in a roundtable
event to discuss the findings. The five key messages from this workshop series is now reported in
a briefing paper which you can view via the webpages.

"One of the most important recent findings is that civil action can be a
surprisingly effective way for citizens to keep their governments in line
while avoiding violence. If you want to know how citizens can do this-even
in an era of democratic decline -- read this book. It couldn't come at a
better time." - Barbara F. Walter, Professor of Political Science, University
of California, San Diego

Women's Activism, Feminism, and Social Justice

Margaret A. McLaren 9780190947699

"Women's Activism, Feminism and Social Justice theorizes global

feminism(s) as intersectional and interdependent by engaging with both
Western and Indian feminists. It argues for a responsive and responsible
framework of feminist agency that addresses socio-economic
oppression in culturally specific contexts. McLaren's pioneering
explorations on decolonizing feminism promise to inform and enrich
endeavors of transnational solidarities integrating theory and activism."
- Kanchana Mahadevan, Professor, Department of Philosophy, University
of Mumbai
