In this regard, the Council acknowledged the importance of having representation of global
South members on Council, therefore it was agreed by the Council to have two representatives
of global South members in the Council. These persons will be chosen through an online election
which will be held amongst global South members.
It is therefore being announced for the information of members from global South who have the
interest, passion to serve and time to sacrifice to look out for the call for nominations on the
DSA website and present themselves for the election. We also encourage all global South
members to participate in the online election when the time is due.
The convenors of the seven workshops came together at the DSA Conference in a roundtable
event to discuss the findings. The five key messages from this workshop series is now reported in
a briefing paper which you can view via the webpages.
FutureDAMS
Dr Barnaby Dye, a research associate within the FutureDAMS research and capacity development
partnership, appeared on a BBC World report to discuss ‘the challenge of dams’ and the critical
trade-offs involved in dam decision making.
ODID has recently published its 2019 Annual Report, which highlights new research, publications,
events, honours and awards, student activities and more.
The Refugee Economies Programme at the Refugee Studies Centre has published four new
reports based on research in Ethiopia and Kenya.
The latest issue of Forced Migration Review, which includes a major feature on ‘Return:
voluntary, safe, dignified and durable?’ plus a mini-feature on ‘Towards understanding and
addressing the root causes of displacement’, is now online.
Cheryl Doss, Senior Departmental Lecturer and Associate Professor, has been named an Honorary
Fellow of the African Association of Agricultural Economists (AAAE).
DPU's Prof Adriana Allen joins a team of international experts to produce UNEP’s Global
Environment Outlook (GEO) Report for Cities, and will act as a co-leader of the final chapter
that examines pathways for bold city action towards environmentally just urbanisation.

Dr Catalina Ortiz was invited to the 2019 World Human Rights Cities Forum, held in the city of
Gwangju, Korea (Sept 30 – Oct 3), to be part of the Special Session on the Right to Housing in

Dr Kar and Dr Sequeria on this year’s Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences
Dr Sohini Kar and Dr Sandra Sequeria we interviewed by sciencemag.com for their opinions about
this year’s Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Whilst Dr Sequeria congratulates the
winners, Dr Kar encourages caution when using randomized controlled trials in the fight against

Intensive workshop supports planning of large projects for 4 million refugees in Turkey – CIDT
Following a needs assessment exercise, Philip Dearden (Head of CIDT) conducted a workshop in
Results Based Management (RBM) and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) for ILO staff in order to
help improve the quality and results focus of ILO projects. The intensive workshop which was
held in Ankara, Turkey, was attended by 31 ILO staff, all of whom had successfully completed
CIDT’s RBM online course prior to the training.

Funding opportunities
A four year interdisciplinary PhD opportunity, fully-funded by the Leverhulme Centre for
Anthropocene Biodiversity, is now available. The PhD project will investigate the impact of
human activities on biodiversity change associated with novel export crops such as soy or palm
oil. The successful student will draw on social science and biological concepts and perspectives,
be supervised jointly by leading experts in Politics, Environment and Geography and Biology and
join a dynamic cohort of PhD students based in the new Leverhulme Centre at York.

EADI
EADI has recently published its 2018 Annual Report which also highlights some
plans for the coming year. These include EADI's new Blog, “Debating
Development Research”, which features cutting edge articles written by EADI
members. The blog will introduce the topics of the next EADI General Conference to be held in
The Hague from 29 June to 02 July 2020. The call for papers is open until 15 December. EADI
also offers a webinar series, which offers participants the opportunity to engage with critical
thinkers and innovative new research findings.
