Title
This should let the reader know what you are investigating – be specific
Abstract
This is a paragraph outlining what you investigated and what you found. The reader should be able to read this
and know what the report is all about
Background Information
Include your research in this section.
Make sure you do not plagiarise this section. Any research you do should be written in your own words and your
sources should be included in a reference list.
Questions to consider:
1. Are appropriate scientific theories and ideas used and discussed?
2. Have the theories and ideas above been used research and answer the research question?
3. Have other similar investigations been researched and are they useful in answering the research question
or helping to support similar relationships in results?
4. Have secondary resources been appropriately referenced?
5. How does this link to what you have learnt in the classroom?

Aim
State exactly what you will be investigating
Be specific and start with the word “To…”
Questions to consider:
1. Is the aim linked to the research question and hypothesis?
2. Does it start with a verb, such as: to measure, to investigate?
3. Have only 1 aim for each experiment. If you are doing multiple experiments, then you need to have
multiple aims.

Hypothesis
Use the format “If I change ‘x’, then ‘y’ will happen”
Make sure your hypothesis is supported by your background research
Questions to consider:
1. Does it contain the Independent variable (I.V) and the dependent variable (D.V)?
2. Are these two variables related to a cause (I.V) and effect (D.V) relationship?
3. Have you linked your hypothesis to something you can observe in your experiment? Is it testable?

Materials
List your materials in this space

Risk assessment
Have you identified specific hazards and appropriate precautions for each hazard?

Method
1. Has it been written in steps that are chronological?
2. Does each step begin with a verb?
3. Does it begin with how the experiment is set up?
4. Does it contain at least one detailed diagram of the setup?
5. Does the method demonstrate a process that shows a change in the I.V variable?
6. Does the method demonstrate a process that accurately measures and observes the D.V?

Assessment Task Cover Sheet 19/11/2019 V2

7. Does the method control the controlling variables?
8. Is the role of the control identified and outlined? (Note, not all investigations have a control).
9. Does it show repetition for fair testing?
10. Have you clicked a photo of your actual experimental setup?

Results
Quantitative results
1. Have you drawn a table to show all the readings you have collected?
2. Have you collated these results in the form of a graph/ chart etc?
3. Have you written the correct formulae, units, averages, headings?
4. Have you written the following for a graph?
 Title
 Heading
 Axis labels
 Scale
 Units
 Equally spaced scale
 Graph points clearly marked

Qualitative results
1. Are these observations represented in a graphical format such as a table, chart, diagrams/photos, and
video format with appropriate headings?
2. Have you written time, date and location for each image?

Discussion
Aim for at least 200 words in this section
Be critical of the results (get someone to peer review).

1. Has any error been identified?

2. Was there anything that did not go as per plan? How did you overcome this problem?
3. Has any uncertainty in measurement been taken into account?
4. Have the averages been calculated correctly?
5. Do the results show a lot of variability within each sample size and have the issues been
identified/outlined/discussed as to why?
6. Have the controlled variables been controlled effectively?

Relate the results to the question, aim, hypothesis

1. Have patterns and trends been identified?

2. Are the relationships between variables discussed and related to the aim and hypothesis?
3. Do the results help explain the initial research question?
4. What would you do differently if you were to do this experiment again?

Conclusion
1. Have the results been summarised, without introducing new ideas? (refer to the section above)
2. Have the results effectively addressed the aim?
3. Is there a statement of support or rejection of the hypothesis?
