1. Tie one end of a piece of thread to a horizontal fixed support. Make a knot at the other end of
the thread, large enough so that the glass rod can be inserted through it without falling and can
be free to rotate.
2. Rub briskly two glass rods for five minutes on a piece of nylon or silk. Insert one of these rods
through the knot on the thread.
3. Bring the other rod near the suspended rod (a). Observe what happens.
4. Remove the glass rod from the thread.
5. Repeat Steps 1 to 4 using rubber rods and wool or fur (b).
6. Repeat step 1. Rub a glass rod on silk and a rubber rod on wool for five minutes. Insert the glass
rod through the knot in the thread.
7. Bring the rubber rod near the suspended glass rod (c).Observe what happens.
8. Record all your observations in table 2.
C. Polarization
1. Charge a glass rod by rubbing it briskly for five minutes on a piece of nylon or silk cloth
2. Turn on the faucet in such a way that the water flows in a small but continues stream
3. Bring the rod near the water stream. Observe what happens.
4. Punch two small holes opposite each other on a can of cooking oil.
5. Charge a glass rod by rubbing it briskly for five minutes on a piece of nylon or silk cloth.
6. Tip the can of cooking oil in such a way that the oil will make a small but continues stream.
7. Bring the rods near the oil stream. Observe what happens.
8. Record all your observation.
