Recent international events have highlighted growing levels of support for rightwing groups
and their ideologies. in Australia, securty agencies have been concerned about right-wing
ideologies for some time, and tis potential risk s being monitored within Australian preone,
In New Zealand the annual National Font Flag Day, held in October, saw a clash between
National Front members and ant-ascst protestors. This confrontation consisted mainly of
verbal altercatons between the two groups but some minor physical altercation did occur

> Individuals who hold rightwing beliefs are currently under Corrections management,
however, due to thelr small numbers their activites, impact and influence is almost
certainly limited. There sno indication that recent international events have prompted
an increase in right-wing activity within the New Zealand corrections environment.

Recent international events have highlighted growing support for right-wing groups,
their ideologies, and subsequently their actions. In some cases, these actions have
become violent, even fatal. Overseas corrections environments have also been
impacted by ths isue, as an Australian individual with a fartght ideology is uerently
remanded in custody in Victoria on terrorism charges

> For the purposes of ths report right-wing or favight describes individuals r groups
with an antiimmigration and/or white nationalism ideology. Within the New Zealand
corrections environment, these groups include (but are not limited to) White Power;
White Power Creed; National Front; right-wing Resistance; 4th Reich; Skinheaes; Chaos
Skins; Rodent Aryan Brotherhood; Crew 38 and the Ruthless Boot Boy.
Conclusions and Recommendations
> Corrections inteligence wil continue to monitor those individuals mentioned inthis
report, however, this will be prioritised against other Persons of Interest azoss the
corrections environment. The international situation will also be monitored to help
dentify any potential emerging threats inthe New Zealand context.
> Consideration should be given to encouraging all frontline Corrections staff to
lundertake the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) elearning. currently available
through the Learning Management System. A wide range of ideologies are covered in
this elearning as well as indicators of extremism. Staff that have completed the &
learning will be better placed to asset with the identifeation of right-wing Persons of
Interest,
> Agencies receiving this report are encouraged to advise Corrections intelgence of any
additional intelligence holdings or collection requlrements that may assist with ongoing
‘monitoring of known Persons of Interest. Additionally, Corrections Intelligence should
be notified as soon as possible when a person with a right-wing ideology Is“ come
under Corrections management, so early planning can be done regarding their
