Ans: The land Revenue system. The


permanent settlement of Bengal fixed
the revenue at such high level that only
poor peasants but also zamindars found
it difficult to pay.

from Britain resulted in the decline of
Indian industries leaving millions of
Indian artisans jobless.
Write about the military causes of the Revolt?

In the Army, Indians were not allowed to rise in


their jobs beyond the rank of sergeant. The
sepoys were also not allowed to wear the marks
of their caste on their foreheads, as well as the
new act forced the sepoys to go abroad to fight
war though the Hindu faith prohibited them
from crossings the seas. The sepoys who fought
abroad realized that Indian soldiers are large in
number than British army, this gave them
courage to rise in the revolt.

Wahabi movement is a protest against the rapid


loss of power and wealth suffered by Muslims in
India. It was started by the Muslims leaders in
Bengal.

emperor. After the revolt he was exiled to
Rangoon in Burma where he died after few

1. How did the religious & economic reforms of
the British alienate orthodox Indians?

During the British rule many religious and


economic reforms were introduced in India.
Education was provided to Indians including
women but they were not given equal status in
terms of jobs & salaries.

The british also openly criticized some Hindu


customs like sati and sanctioned law for
remarriage of widows as well as English medium
schools were introduced especially of Christians
missionary- all these were made if orthodox
Indians.

Describe briefly on the immediate cause of the


revolt?
The introduction of the new Enfield rifle by the
British which was smeared with grease to
prevent the iron cartridge from rusting. The
soldiers have to bite off one end of the
cartridge before wading. Now, a rumour was
spread the grease was made up of fat of course
& pigs which angered the sepoys and they
started the revolt.

Describe the reasons for the failure of the


report.

a. Lack of unity among the Indians- the revolt


did not involve the entire region.
b. Lack of a national leader- the revolt threw up
several strong & independent traders but
there were no single leaders who could unite
the various groups.
c. Lack of resources- there was no proper
transport & communication facilities like
British. The rebels could not match the
modern weapons & materials of wars used by
the british.

1. Through the revolt was a failure it


succeeded in promoting a feeling of
nationalism among Indians.

administration of the Indians from last
Indian company.
3. The numbers of British troops were
greatly increased.
4. The artillery was put completely in British
hand.

ensure welfare to people, especially
peasants.

The main Purpose of the Simon commission was to


take a decision on self –government for Indian.
Indians all over the country criticized the fact
that the body meant to decide Indian’s future did
not include a single Indian.
