Amazing Pigs

People see pigs as lazy animals that just do nothing rather than eating and
sleeping. Practically, pork is the primary source of food of the most people globally, but
the question is do we really know the background of this specie? During our film viewing
in connection to the science month celebration, I learned a lot regarding the movie we
watched entitled “Amazing Pigs” which was about the family of pigs- some facts about
pigs, the way of their living and a lot more.

The first thing I learned from the movie is that pigs can swim. I never thought
of swimming pigs ever, it fascinated me seeing pigs swimming in the movie and they
were even smarter than chimpanzees and even sporty animals. 10,000 years ago, the
domestication of pigs began and Africa was known as the home of world’s wild pigs and
moreover, wild boar is the largest family of wild pigs. Pigs use their nose (smell) in
surviving and even in mating as a matter of fact, their sense of smelling is higher 7%
than humans- they use it in getting foods to eat especially in the wild life, and in there
they compete for mating using their smell; whoever pig will win, they use their saliva as
a key to trigger the female pigs. They also have extraordinary memories, and they use
their wits to solve problems. In the movie, a domesticated pig was placed in a maze
wherein the pig was able to locate the food planted in the maze and they use mutual
relationships in nagging problems. These species even have level of self-awareness,
meaning they know who they are- experimentation was done in the film wherein a pig
was placed in front of a mirror and the animal noticed that it was just mere reflection of
its self. Since they were piglets, pigs practice packing order or social order, it can be
shown by the means of breastfeeding them, and they follow certain pattern. Some
species of pigs look weird because they have horns where they use it as a protection for
their eyes during combat. There were also pigs who live in Siberia which is a country
covered with ice/snow. Pigmy hogs were the smallest pigs in the world which is just
20cm big, as big as a palm of a human.
Those were the new lessons I learned as we watched the film, and afterwards I
realized that we can’t really judge a book by its cover, just the usual pigs that we
basically see, they were special beings with special skills and abilities. We have to dig
deeper before judging someone/something, because we are beings here on earth that
has purpose. Everyone here is special in their own ways. But we should be like pigs; we
should keep ourselves low key and surprise others with our special skills, talents and
abilities in order for us to bloom.
