“Velcro” was the creation of Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral, who had been inspired by a walk in
the woods with his dog in 1941. Upon their return home, de Mestral noticed that burrs (from the
burdock plant) had attached themselves to his pants and to his dog's fur.
De Mestral, an amateur inventor and a curious man by nature, examined the burrs under a
microscope. What he saw intrigued him. De Mestral would spend the next 14 years attempting to
duplicate what he saw under that microscope before introducing Velcro to the world in 1955.

Reigning from a Cross.
1. God gives us only what we need. In the First Reading we see how David, an intelligent
and brave shepherd, was proclaimed king of the tribe of Judah.
He was able to build a powerful kingdom which inherited his son Solomon, who managed to
keep the kingdom of his father united, but soon the tribes separate again and Israel returns to
be an insignificant people, derided by the strong neighboring countries.
The dream of the Israelites of Jesus’ time was to rebuild the great kingdom of David one day
and become the rulers of the world and they prayed every day to the Lord to send his Mes-
siah.
Jesus Christ is God’s answer to the prayers and expectations of his people. Like David, He is a
shepherd king who sought to look after the lost sheep.
As always, God’s answer goes beyond our petitions and aspirations. The Good Thief asked Jesus simply to be remembered: Remember me
when you have come into your kingdom. But He replied to him: Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.
We cannot fully understand why our Heavenly Father chose this form of saving us, the Passion of his Son. Perhaps Soren Kierkegaard
(1813–1855) a Danish philosopher. who used to invite his readers to discover the meaning of his works, can help us.
He wrote a story about a king who fell in love with a peasant girl. The king knew that it was impossible for him to marry the girl. Kings
never married peasants. They always married royalty. But this king was so powerful that he could marry the girl and get away with it. But
another thought occurred to him. If he married the peasant girl and stayed king, there would always be something missing in their rela-
tionship. Because he was the king he believed that she might admire and respect him but never really love him. The gap between them
would be too great. She would always be conscious of the fact that he was royalty and was a mere lowly peasant. So he came up with a plan.
He decided that he would resign he kingship and become a lowly peasant himself. Then he offers his love to her as one lowly peasant to
another. Nice idea. But the king eventually realized that regardless of how noble this might be, it could backfire. He could lose not only his
throne, but the girl as well. She might reject him; especially if she thought him foolish for doing such a reckless thing like give up your
throne and all the benefits that go along with being king.
So what should he do? The king finally decided that he loved the peasant girl so much that he would risk everything to make true love be-
tween them possible.
Kierkegaard never told how the story ended, he never told whether the girl accepted the king’s love or rejected it, he never told whether
they got married and lived happily ever after. Undoubtedly, Kierkegaard had some reasons for not telling how the story ended. One reason
might be because that’s not the point of the story. The point of the story is the king’s love for the lowly peasant. Another reason
why Kierkegaard never told how the story ended is because it really has not ended…it’s still going on. You could say that each of us is in the
process of writing his or her own personal ending to that story. Each one of us is in the process of determining whether we will welcome
God’s love or reject it. In our case, it is a true story, whose ending has not yet been written.
For my part, I believe that our Heavenly Father was (and is always) willing to give us a clear, powerful sign of His affliction, which He
confidently shares with us, his true and deepest spiritual “emotion”: There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than
over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance (Lk 15:7). This is the base of His decision to permit the Passion of his
beloved Son. Also, this is why it is appropriate to call Jesus a shepherd king. A Good Shepherd gathers, not scatters. Gathering people:
undoubtedly, the hardest thing in this world, because separation is the fastest and most-travelled road to fleeting and delusive joy.
2. If God’s answer is exactly what we need, why is he not accepted by the Israelites and by ourselves?
We find the answer in today’s Gospel. The three kinds of people at near the Jesus’ cross represent well our attitudes to the Word of God.
* There are people who do not to realize what is happening. They do not understand why a righteous person who dies without
reacting may be the long-awaited king. They do not understand why does not God intervene to save him and to help them.
These perplexed people at the foot of the cross are not responsible for the death of Jesus, rather they represent the poor in spirit, they feel
powerless and abandoned: All people who had gathered to watch the spectacle, as soon as they saw what had happened, went home
beating their breast (Lk 23:48).
They represent all those well-disposed people who would like to understand the plan of God but they cannot because those (you and I)
who should accompany and enlighten them, in turn, are blind and insensitive, perhaps we have regarded them as an impossible case or we
lost patience with them. They do not know how to do good to their fellowmen. Nobody ever told them.
Many of them, like the Colossians in the Second Reading, and many of us as well, desperately turn to idols of many kinds, some not inher-
ently bad, but potentially capable of destroying our emotional and spiritual freedom and dragging us to lose the meaning of love. Consum-
erism, obsession with keeping us young and beautiful and an uncontrollable desire for new experiences are well-known contemporary
examples.
Today, these threats are more grave and serious than in 1925, when the Feast of Christ the King was instituted by Pious XI, because these
threats come now in the guise of tolerance, secularization and neutrality.
It is in the Formulative Union, in the contemplation of the life of Christ, meditating on the Spirit of the Gospel, where we gradually find
what we can do in the face of the troubled waters of our passions and the uncontrollable events around us. And particularly, how can we
offer an unconditional forgiveness to all those who do us harm. This is how the lordship of Christ is realized in our soul.
The words of the enemy taunting Christ should apply to us: Save yourself first if you want to save others. Unless we are saved, unless we
are freed from the slavery of sin, no one will believe that Christ is our savior.
To speak of Jesus as our king and Lord means that Christ reigns in my mind, in my will, in my soul.
* The second kind of people are really cruel and merciless. The wicked gang of the Pharisees, and the Roman soldiers. All these
were mocking Him. They laugh at Christ: he is a loser, unable to save himself and does not come down from the cross.
But Jesus does not give the proof that they ask for. He does not descend from the cross to convince everyone. If he came down from the
cross, he would betray his mission: he would be supporting the false idea of God that the spiritual leaders of the people have in mind, a
mighty God who defeats and humbles the enemies, who is like the powerful of this world because he is strong, arrogant and vindictive.
God is all-powerful because he loves so immensely, he puts himself without limits and conditions to the service of persons. His is the om-
nipotent of service. We have seen it in Jesus who stoops to wash the disciples’ feet: that is the authentic face of the omnipotent God, the
King of the universe.
Can we aspire to have an influence in the lives of cruel and merciless people? Definitely, yes. Remember the narrative of St. Matthew: A
Roman army officer was standing in front of Jesus. When the officer saw how Jesus died, he said, “This man really was the Son of
God!” (Mk 15: 39).
Sooner or later, perhaps at the end of our life or when our neighbor will come before God, our humble testimony will be the means by
which divine mercy will be embraced by the apparently unredeemable and ruthless people.
There is a particularly famous story that illustrates this truth:
There was a priest who was in Rome completing his studies, and each day he would visit one particular church to pray. Now, outside the
church there was a regular group of homeless people, and after a while one of the men caught his eye. So, he approached him to talk and
asked if the two of them had ever met before.
The homeless man looked at him and said: Yes, we were ordained together. Apparently the homeless man had fallen on some hard times
as a priest and left the priesthood.
Well, the priest had the opportunity to have an audience with the Pope John Paul II. So, he told him: Holy Father, there is a priest living
on the streets here in Rome. If there is anything you can do, please help.
A couple of days later, the priest received an invitation from Pope John Paul II to have dinner, and to invite the homeless man. As the
night was winding down the Pope asked if he could speak with the homeless man privately. After 20 minutes they returned, noticeably
emotional. They said their goodbyes, and the priest escorted the homeless man out and he asked what had occurred in their private meet-
ing.
The homeless man told him: The Pope asked me if I would hear his confession. The Pope, apparently said that if he wanted, he would re-
instate him as a priest. The homeless man accepted, and he heard the Pope’s confession. The Pope then heard his, and appointed him to
minister to the homeless at the church where he used to beg.
Jesus knows well that the soldiers were ignorant and poor men, snatched from their families and sent, for little money, to commit violence
against a people of different language, custom and religion.
They can only repeat the words they have heard uttered by their leaders: If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself. They don't really
know what they do. They ignore the full extent and the consequences of their actions.
In our spiritual language, we would say that the people of this second group are slaves of their Dominant Defect, usually some manifesta-
tion of pride and fear. Many of us are living in sin but because we are so anesthetized by the world, we have come to live with our sins,
thinking that it is normal. Without a real consciousness of sin, how can we ever be able to distinguish what is right and wrong? This is the
way our dominant defect enslaves us.
* The good thief represents the people who mourn over their sins, who truly repent of their sins. This second thief calls
Jesus by name. He considers him as a friend, the friend of someone who has had a devastated life. He does not consider him just an
“important person” but a traveling companion, someone who agreed to undergo, despite being right, the fate of the wicked.
The good thief did exactly what he needed to do: to acknowledge and give up sin that enslaved him. By contrast, many of us have a vague
idea of our sins, even when we can accurately give an abstract theological definition of sin.
Like most of the people surrounding the crucified, the leaders, the soldiers and one of the thieves, we are not able to embrace and recog-
nize the ongoing opportunities to live out the freedom of God’s kingdom, to serve, to surrender our freedom to God and to be fulfilled with
His grace.
As Jesus taught us in the parable of the Unprofitable Servant, only when we are able to serve with the talents and health which have been
given to us, we receive the greatest reward and become more and more the image and likeness of God in whom we have been created.
When we give, we receive the joy of giving and seeing someone loved on one hand, and on the other, we grow in the capacity to share in the
giving and sharing of God. He came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mt 20: 28).
The good thief managed to offer his life to Christ in the last minute.
He realized that there is more to the human story than what we see, experience, and understand. He realized that Jesus held the keys to a
Kingdom much greater than our own personal universe of thoughts and desires. He realized that Christ’s Kingdom could begin on earth,
through faith, hope and obedience, but that it would only reach its fullness in heaven.
And the Good Thief hung on the cross, even dying in excruciating pain, was joyful because he had placed himself under the King’s protec-
tion.
Perhaps the most practical lesson we can learn in this feast of Christ the King it that, even in the darkest hour, when I feel that the world
has turned on me, in times of emotional despair, I am enabled (and frequently required) to help someone else in need, to reach out to for-
give or encourage another, to give a small and decisive foretaste of what eternal life is.
