And so wave bye-bye to
one of the greatest streaks
college football will ever
know. Certainly, you
probably won’t see 33 wins
in a row again in FCS
football.
UNI brought it. Its fans
brought it. Everybody in
the Cedar Valley had been
waiting for this game since
the Bison came from
behind to beat them last
year, and NDSU walked
into the proverbial hornet’s
nest.
It was the first time Mark
Farley in his 14 years as
head coach at UNI saw
students storm the field
after a game.
“We’ve had some great
games in here, the
Delawares, the Maines, the
New Hampshires. I’ve
never seen the students hit
the field,” he said. “That
was a cool moment. To
have them involved, vested,
that’s why you play college
football. The student
energy and spirit … it was
great for our school. That
energy is awesome to see.”
That energy was seen for
four quarters from the UNI
defense, and the Bison
offense looked lost. Total
yards: 175. Ugh. Rushing
yards: 43. Double ugh.
“They were a very good
defense, very sound,” said
Bison quarterback Carson
Wentz. “They didn’t do
anything much different
than we saw on film. Hats
off to them. Their front
four were very stout as
advertised.”
But what hasn’t been
advertised of late is a stout
home-field advantage. UNI
hasn’t made the playoffs
since 2011, and people were
perhaps taking notice over
the last few years.
Not this time.
NDSU got a good dose of
Fargodome thrown at
them, making mistakes
that could be attributed to
the noisy UNI-Dome.
“I thought it did,” head
coach Chris Klieman said
when asked if the noise
bothered his team.
“Especially on third down.
We prepped for that, too,
but I thought their crowd
was good.”
As much praise as the
offensive line has gotten
over the course of this win
streak, this game will not
go down in the highlights,
put it that way.
The power run game that
blew away South Dakota
State in the second half
last week? Nowhere to be
found.
The biggest obstacle to a
winning streak coming to a
halt is not scoring, and
that’s what happened.
The special teams were
poor, especially the kickoff
coverage unit that
everybody knew would be a
key, and the Panthers won
the battle of field position
most of the day.
The receivers had a tough
time getting open, and
when they did, Wentz
missed more of them than
he hit. The penalties added
up, 12 infractions for 94
yards.
It was a tough day at the
office.
“It’s a feeling I don’t want
to feel again,” said Bison
senior defensive end Kyle
Emanuel. “I thought coach
Klieman had a great speech
after the game, he talked
about moving on and not
letting this game beat us
more than once. We’ll see
the film and move on to
Missouri State.”
That’s pretty good advice
from a level-headed player.
For the fans that aren’t so
level-headed, NDSU was
not going to win 100 in a
row.
The ship didn’t sink on
Saturday night. It took on
water, lots and lots of
purple water.
The pirates wearing all
purple uniforms for the
first time in a long time
came aboard the S.S.
Thundar and had their way.
Wentz hurt his ankle last
week against SDSU and
we’ll never know if that
affected him all week. That
certainly wouldn’t explain
the longest run by a Bison
running back all game
being seven yards by John
Crockett.
No, it was UNI that was
the ground-and-pound
team that controlled the
second half. The Panthers
did to NDSU what NDSU
did to the last 33 opponents.
If they rush for 43 yards
again next Saturday, there
will be another streak to
talk about: two straight
losses.
“We didn’t block
exceptionally well up front,
and they did a good job
getting off blocks,”
Klieman said of Crockett’s
tough day. “We have to get
him on track.”

‘We’re moving on’
North Dakota State falls behind early, suffers first road loss since 2010

top-ranked Bison, ending a
historic NCAA Division I
FCS winning streak. John-
son rushed for a game-high
133 yards as the Panthers
powered to a 23-3 victory in
Missouri Valley Football
Conference play before
14,777 fans.
“There was definitely
some extra incentive in
this game for me,” said
Farley, who broke his leg
late in NDSU’s 24-23 come-
back win last season in the
Fargodome before being
taken to a local hospital.
“They are all big games,
but this one feels good.”
The Bison (9-1, 5-1
MVFC) had their FCS
record 33-game winning
streak snapped, losing on
the road for the first time
since Dec. 11, 2010. That
last road setback was 38-31
overtime loss at Eastern
Washington in the FCS
quarterfinals.
“It’s a great streak,” said
Bison senior safety Colten
Heagle, the only current
player who played in that
Eastern Washington game.
“It’s over. We’re moving
on.”
UNI (6-4, 4-2) scored the
game’s first 10 points and
never trailed. The Bison

soundly since perhaps 2009
– when Northern Iowa beat
the Bison 43-27.
“It’s definitely a feeling
we don’t want to feel
again,” said Bison
defensive end Kyle
Emanuel, one of 15
seniors, with the majority
having suffered only three
losses in their careers.
Had the Bison been able
to win Saturday at UNI-
Dome – where they have
won only once before since
moving up to Division I –
their 34 straight wins
would have equaled that of
Miami of Florida’s run
from 2000 to 2002 and
Southern Cal’s run from
2003 to 2005.
The hard part for those
two schools is their runs
came to an end in national
championship games.
Miami lost to Ohio State
31-24 in double overtime in
the Fiesta Bowl. USC lost
to Texas 41-38 in the Rose
Bowl.
Now those would be
tough pills to swallow.
“I would rather lose
today than lose in
December,” said Bison

like that is play four quar-
ters. We attacked.”
Kilfoy helped shift the
momentum in the Pan-
thers favor in the second
quarter. With the Bison fac-
ing a third-and-8 at the
Northern Iowa 11-yard
line, the 6-foot-1,
212-pounder picked off a
deflected pass near the goal
line and returned the inter-
ception up the sideline 45
yards. A Bison penalty dur-
ing the return tacked on an
extra 15, moving the ball to
the NDSU 37.
“That was a huge play,”
Mark Farley said. “We

a touchdown that would’ve
given the Bison a 28-17 lead
before he lost the ball
without getting hit. The
Bison won their first
national title a few weeks
later.
It was in 2012 when
NDSU’s only loss was a
17-14 home loss to Indiana
State. Remember? Indiana
State’s only two
touchdowns came on two
interception returns. Two
months later, the Bison
won their second national
title.
What’s different about
this regular-season loss is
this: It would be hard to
argue that the Bison
should’ve won this game –
not like those above-
mentioned losses or not
like its heartbreaking loss
at Eastern Washington.
As often is the case when
a juggernaut like NDSU
gets beat, turnovers and

knew we had to stop them
in the red zone if we were
going to win a football
game like this.”
Four plays later, the Pan-
thers were in the end zone
after quarterback Brion
Carnes scored on a 6-yard
touchdown run. That gave
Northern Iowa a 7-0 lead
with 3 minutes, 59 seconds
remaining in the first half.
The Panthers controlled
the momentum from that
point.
“I think it was a big
momentum swing in their
favor,” said Bison quarter-
back Carson Wentz, who
completed 15 of 25 passes
for 132 yards with the one
interception to Kilfoy.
NDSU tried to climb back
into the game late in the
third quarter after C.J.
Smith returned a punt 30
yards to the Northern Iowa
mistakes are a big reason.
There was the interception
that kept NDSU from
scoring just before
halftime and allowing
Northern Iowa to score
instead. There was the
fumble that gave Northern
Iowa a 10-0 lead early in the
second half.
But Saturday, Northern
Iowa was the clear-cut
winner.
The UNI-Dome noise and
Northern Iowa’s defense –
the best the Bison have
seen and may see all
season – had NDSU’s high-
powered offense out of
sync. And if there was a
weak link exposed in all of
this, it was the inability of
NDSU’s receivers to get
open – allowing the
Panthers defense to limit
the Bison to 43 yards
rushing and 175 total
yards.
When’s the last time that
happened? You may have to
go back to 2010 when the
Bison ended their regular-
season with a 3-0 loss at
Missouri State – the last
time a Bison team did not
score a touchdown.
“It’s one game and they
had the upper hand today,”
Klieman said. “Give them
credit. We’ll go back to
work on Monday. Our guys
have a lot of resolve. You
don’t win as many games
as we have and win three
national championships
and not have resolve. I have

Miller put an exclamation
on the victory with a
30-yard touchdown burst.
That gave the Panthers a
23-3 lead with 5:04 remain-
ing.
“We got stronger as the
game moved forward,” said
Mark Farley, who added
this victory ranks among
the top 5 in his coaching
career.
The Panthers rushed for
213 yards on 44 attempts,
while holding the Bison to
43 rushing yards on 28 car-
ries. A few hundred North-
ern Iowa fans stormed the
field after the final horn
sounded.
“We got beat today, but
come Monday we’ll make
sure no one is pointing any
fingers,” Bison head coach
Chris Klieman said. “I
don’t think that will hap-
pen. I would rather lose
today than lose in Decem-
ber. … We are still 9-1 and
we control our own des-
tiny.”

actually losing a game,
Northern Iowa players
were celebrating with the
students who had rushed
onto the field.
“That’s the first time
ever that I’ve seen that
happen,” said Northern
Iowa head coach Mark
Farley, Northern Iowa’s
head coach the last 14
years and a player for the
Panthers in the 1980s.

“That was a big burden
on those guys … shoot that
has been 30-some games,”
Klieman said. “That’s
something I don’t think
will ever be done again. To
win as many games as we
have in a row, I would be
hard pressed if any FCS
school would be able to
that again.”
So take a deep breath and
perhaps feel grateful we
witnessed such a streak.
And be grateful that
another streak is still

Gophers go
on offensive
Minnesota scores most points in
a game against Iowa since 1949

ST. PAUL – As soundly as
the Gophers crushed Iowa
in a 51-14 win Saturday, this
wasn’t just for division title
race implications or to
bring home the bacon – as
in the Floyd of Rosedale
pig.
This was payback.
Memories of a 55-0 loss to
Iowa in the last game at the
Metrodome in 2008 were
still fresh. Minnesota’s
players and coaches also
agreed that the worst game
they played during a suc-
cessful eight-win season
last year was a 23-7 home
loss to the Hawkeyes.
Saturday made up for
those games, and then
some.
The Gophers (7-2, 4-1 Big
Ten), who play Ohio State
next week at home, added
the pig to the Little Brown
Jug they got for beating
Michigan, capturing both
in the same season for the
first time since winning
their last Big Ten title in
1967.
They finish this season
playing Wisconsin in Madi-
son on Nov. 29 for Paul Bun-
yan’s Axe.
“It’s huge for us, and real-
ly it’s big for this state, the
state of Minnesota,” quar-
terback Mitch Leidner, who
had 212 total yards and
threw for four touchdowns,
said of Saturday’s win. “We
had really good support out
there today and a great
crowd. It was really cool to
see, and I’m just happy for
my teammates and coaches
and fans.”
Facing what was a virtual
elimination game in the Big
Ten West Division race, the
Gophers made a statement
by scoring 51 points, their
most in the series since a
55-7 win in 1949.
The Gophers and
Hawkeyes entered the game
with identical 6-2 records,
including 3-1 records in the
conference for a second-
place tie with Wisconsin.
Nebraska was 4-1.

UND took another right

State beat North Dakota
24-12 in front of a dazed
5,932 fans at the Alerus Cen-
ter.
UND lost its third
straight game to drop to 3-7
overall and 1-5 in Big Sky
Conference play.
“When you lose to a win-
less team, it never feels
good,” UND senior running

son at home against North-
ern Arizona and on the
road at Northern Colorado.
True freshman Keaton
Studsrud started at quar-
terback for the second
straight week after injuries
to sophomores Joe Moll-
berg and Ryan Bartels.
Studsrud finished 12-for-
33 passing for 115 yards and
a touchdown. He also threw
two first-half interceptions,
which helped the Wildcats
build a 17-3 halftime lead.
