At an award ceremony held during Burr and Burton Academy’s most recent meeting of the Manchester, Vermont
school’s Board of Trustees, SALF recognized the school and sponsors, it’s faculty, students and the local SALF
Instructors for the accomplishment of training each and every student at Burr and Burton Acadeny in SALF basic life
supporting first aid programs during the 06-07 school year.

SALF President/Founder Carol Spizzirri along with Vermont Electric Company President and CEO John Donleavy
presented awards to Headmaster Charles Scranton, Dean of Students Anthony Cirelli, Cadet Coordinator Cara
Donleavy, Instructors Greg Malinowski, Mike Cromis and Morgan Ax as well as Reg Trayah and Timothy Oliver of the
Vermont State Police who also assisted with the training. VELCO’s Donleavy is strong SALF advocate and led the
effort to bring SALF to Vermont. “Students are frequently bystanders at emergency scenes and, given Vermont’s rural
nature, when trained they can help sustain life until professional help arrives. “These students can serve as a critical
pre-EMS ‘medical care bridge’ in time of an emergency,” explained John Donleavy, who Cara Donleavy, daughter of
the VELCO President and a junior at Burr and Burton, served as the SALF Junior Cadet Coordinator, taking an active
role in scheduling of the training classes, collecting the data and working with the EMS instructors to make sure that all
the students had the opportunity to be trained.

SALF President Carol Spizzirri added “The SALF Cadet program here at Burr and Burton Academy is the first of it’s
kind for SALF, and will become a national model for future SALF branches around the country. I commend VELCO for
their strong support, and John (Donleavy) and Headmaster Scranton for their vision and leadership in making this
program a reality, and a great success!” said Spizzirri.

“We take pride in the many opportunities we provide for the exercise of leadership skills and the growth of
self-confidence said Headmaster Scranton. We saw our students get involved, and assume responsibility for their own
education, contributing positively to their school. This training parallels our school’s mission and the feedback from
parents and faculty has all been very positive. We are excited that all the students were able to participate in this
important initiative and we have included it in the curriculum for next year so that all future students of Burr and
Burton, will receive SALF training.” Scranton said.
VELCO and SALF are now working with the Vermont State Department of Health to ensure all of the state’s high
schools are aware of this important training opportunity.
