Effects of Consistent Exercise

Dr.I-Mon Lee said ¨Strong evidence shows that physical inactivity increases the risk of

many adverse health conditions, including major non-communicable diseases such as coronary

heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and breast and colon cancers, and shortens life expectancy¨(The

Effect). Sports encourages regular physical exercise and healthy habits reducing the risk of these

diseases. A active participation in sports helps the participant physically, mentally, and

academically benefits leading into a better quality of life.

Physical activity for all ages has plenty of short term benefits. As stated in the following

quote from The effects of a 2-year physical education program (SPARK) on physical activity and

fitness in elementary school students. Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids, ¨The health

benefits of resistance training in children are similar to those of adults and include: improved

strength, power, muscular endurance, bone density, tendon-bone interface strength, improved

motor performance...¨(Effects of a). Many of the benefits reduce plenty of injuries ranging from

breaking bones and even to shin splints. Consistent physical activity also has plenty of long term

benefits that help through a lifetime.

Studies have shown that playing sports through adolescence consistently helps the body

for many years to come. The American Public Health Association found that forth and fifth

grade students exposed to regular exercise for a hour a day continued to be more fit than the

control group that did not. In addition to that the AJH said, ¨The results of this study add

scientific evidence to the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and

Treatment of High Blood Pressure1 recommendations that nonpharmacologic therapies (ie,

weight loss, increased physical activity) be used as an initial approach to treating patients with

high normal BP and essential hypertension¨(The Independent). With blood pressure reduced

from exercise, the participant has a lower risk of heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, and

dementia.

The benefits of Sports include more than physical health, exercise can help a person's

mental health. Steven J. Petruzzello said that, ¨exercise offers therapeutic benefits for reducing

anxiety without the dangers or costs of drug therapy or psychotherapy...¨ (A Meta-Analysis).

Anxiety can can cause headaches, insomnia, and can create panic attacks. The effects of anxiety

can put a life on hold. With moderate, consistent exercise the amount of anxiety will be reduces

preventing the effects of anxiety.

Edward McAuley said, ¨Additionally, the roles played by physical fitness, body

composition, self-efficacy, and exercise participation as possible contributors to changes in

physical self-worth were examined. Significant improvements in self-esteem at all levels were

discovered with global esteem, physical self-worth, and perceptions of physical condition and

attractive body increasing¨ (Exercise). Another article stated ¨ Students that participate in

extracurricular activities also showed positive changes in students self confidence, teacher

perception, and greater confidence, and then developed positive school related adult attachments.

Extracurricular activities increases a students connection to school, raises their self esteem, and

positive social natures¨(Positive). This shows that exercise reduces anxiety and improves self

esteem making the participant feel better about there self and worry less.

Exercise has wonderful effects on academics, extremely reducing dropout rates and

encouraging a higher education. One study found ¨The athletic programs reduce the dropout rate

by 40 %¨(Positive). In the same article it was said ¨ In sports, they show discipline in drills,

practices, and routines. They have a responsibility to perform those tasks correctly, whether it is

basketball or football, plays, dance routines, or signals in baseball. When students perform these

things correctly they are rewarded for their good behavior and they take pride in their

accomplishments¨ (Positive). This means that sports fill a student with drive and pride that carry

over into their schoolwork, bettering their performance in the classroom.

With the higher level performance in class it is bound to carry the participant farther in

life. ¨It was revealed that students who participate in extracurricular activities are three times

more likely to have a grade point average of a 3.0 or higher. This is higher than students who did

not participate in extracurricular activities. This is regardless of their previous background or

achievement¨(Positive). Students of all backgrounds, social status, ethnicities, and body types

that participate in extracurricular activities such as sports have a increases chance of success in

high school. According to SVSU´s website students must have a 2.0 GPA or higher to apply for

a undergrad program. High school students that participate in sports have a great opportunity of

pursuing a higher education.

Sports provide a safe setting that help their athletes improve their physical health, mental

health, and support their academic achievements. Going through drills, bonding with peers, and

engaging in physical exercise consistently is widely healthful. Dr.I-Mon Lee said ¨Strong

evidence shows that physical inactivity increases the risk of many adverse health conditions,

including major non-communicable diseases such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and

breast and colon cancers, and shortens life expectancy¨(Effect).
