C.2 Motive Question:
 Before we proceed to our new
lesson, kindly read these
questions.
 Motive questions:
 How does the exchange of oxygen
and carbon dioxide happens?
 Why is it important to study the
respiratory system?
 These questions will be answered
later on after the discussion.
C.3 Presentation of the new
lesson
 Our topic today is all about
respiratory system.
 What is respiratory system? Kindly
read the definition.

 Respiratory System – is
responsible for bringing oxygen
inside the body through inhalation
and throwing out carbon dioxide of
the body through exhalation.

 It is simple act of breathing, but it

is important to the whole
functioning of the body.

 We are breathing all the time

because our body cells need
oxygen and throwing out carbon
dioxide because too much carbon
dioxide is toxic to our body.

 Do you understand?
 Yes teacher
 Is there any question?
 None
 There are different parts of
respiratory system.

 Kindly read the number 1.

1. Nose – is the primary organ of
smell.
a. Nostrils – external openings
of the nose, the main
conducting airway.
b. Cilia – specialized tiny hair.

 Respiratory system starts from the

nose. The gas enters and leaves
the body through the nose.

 The nostrils are like an open gate

of the nose.
 Inside of the nose, there are
specialized tiny hair called cilia.
What do you think is the function of
cilia?
 The cilia traps the dirt in the air.
 Very good, those specialized tiny
hair filters the air that we breathe
in.

 Do you understand?
 Yes teacher

 After the air entering the nose, it

goes through the nasal cavity.

 What is nasal cavity?

2. Nasal cavity – two narrow canals.
It is where the air is filtered,
moistened and warmed.
 Nasal cavity are two narrow canals
behind our nose, in the middle of
the face.

 Nasal cavity moistened, warmed

and filtered the air by the help of
cilia because cilia were extended
from the nostrils into the trachea

 Do you understand?
 Yes teacher
 Is there any question?
 None
 After the air gets filtered, warmed
and moistened, it passes through
the pharynx.

 What is pharynx?
3. Pharynx – is the passage for both
food and air, extending from the
back of the nasal cavity and mouth
of the esophagus.
 From the mouth, the food passes
through the pharynx, into the
esophagus and the air from the
nasal cavity into the larynx.

 Do you understand?
 Yes teacher
 After the air passes through the
pharynx, it goes to the larynx.

 What is larynx?
4. Larynx – is the voice box. Inside
the larynx, vocal cords are found
where voice is produced because
of the vibrations of the ligaments
inside the larynx.

 Kindly hold your neck.

(The students were holding their neck)

 Everybody says “ahmmmm”

 ahmmm
 What did you feel when you were
holding your neck while saying
“ahmmm”?
 There is vibration teacher.
 Very good, those vibrations are
from the larynx or voice box that
produces sounds.

 Do you understand?
 Yes teacher
 Since the pharynx is the passage
of both food and air, why do you
think that the food doesn’t go to
the larynx?
 Because of the epiglottis.
 Very good, what is an epiglottis?
 It is a flap tissue, it prevents the
food from passing through the
larynx.
 Very good, when we swallow, the
epiglottis automatically close the
larynx to prevent the food from
passing through the larynx.

 Do you understand?
 Yes teacher
 Is there any question?
 None
 Let’s proceed to the next part of
respiratory system which is the
trachea.

 What is trachea?
5. Trachea – it is the windpipe of the
respiratory system.
 After air passes through the larynx,
it goes through the windpipe called
trachea, then down through the air
tubes called bronchi.

 What is bronchi?
6. Bronchi (bronchus) – also called
Y-tube, it conducts air into the
lungs.
 Bronchi has two branches which is
the left bronchus and right
bronchus that were connected into
the left lung and right lung.

 Since bronchi were connected into

the lungs, the bronchi conducts air
into the lungs.

 Do you understand?

 What are lungs?  Yes teacher

 Lungs are the two spongy saclike 7. Lungs – are the main organs of
organ that occupies the chest the respiratory system.
cavity.

 The right lung is divided into 3

lobes while 2 lobes in the left lung.

 Why do you think that the right

lung is bigger than the left lung?

 Very good, since our heart is filled

at the left part of our chest, there is  To give space for the heart
a space for the heart.

 Do you understand?

 Inside the lungs, there are small

tubes that were connected to the  Yes teacher
bronchi and they called
bronchioles.

 What is bronchioles?
8. Bronchioles – small airway that
were connected to alveoli.
 How do they look like?

 At the end of the bronchioles, there

 They look like branches of tree.
are alveoli.

 What are alveoli?

9. Alveoli – are the tiny sacs in the

 How do they look like? lungs. The site of gas exchange.
 Very good! There are about 300  They look like grapes.
million alveoli in our lungs. The
alveoli are covered with capillaries
and this is where the oxygen and
carbon dioxide exchange.

 Oxygen in the air sacs moves and

absorbed by the blood, and carbon
dioxide moves out of the blood and
absorbed by the air sacs.

 Do you understand?

 Is there any question?

 Yes teacher
 The respiration was like in our
activity earlier, when the first  None
member passed the question to
the next member until it reaches
the last member and he/she run
into the board to write the answer.
The question becomes an answer.

 In respiration, the nose is the one

which receives the oxygen first and
it is passed to the other parts until
it reaches the alveoli that
exchange into carbon dioxide.

 Do you understand?

 Is there any question?

 Yes teacher
 There is a muscle that helps us in
breathing and it is called the  None
diaphragm.

 Kindly read the definition.

10. Diaphragm – it is a large dome

shaped muscle. It constructs

an important role in our breathing.

 As we breathe, we inhale and

exhale. What do you mean by
inhale?

 Very good, how about exhale?  When the oxygen gets inside the
body.

 Very good, what do you think will  When the carbon dioxide gets off

are inhaling?

 Very good, how about when we

exhale?  Our lungs get expanded.

 Very good. Give yourselves good

job clap.  Our lungs get smaller.
 This is a lung model that
represents what happen to the  (Good job clap)
lungs when we are breathing.

 What are the parts of respiratory

system that were presented in the
lung model?

 Very good, another?

 trachea
 Very good, what else?
 bronchi

 lungs
 Very good, give yourselves nice

process of inhalation.

 When the diaphragm gets relax

upward, the lungs get smaller and
this is the process of exhalation.

 Do you understand?

 Is there any question?

the process of respiration and how  None

model.

Materials:
Y-tube straw, jar, balloons, masking tape,
clay.

Procedures:
1. On the end of each tube, place a
balloon that will serve as the lungs.
You can use masking tape.
2. Then, insert the Y-tube straw in the
hole at the bottom of the jar.
Sealed it with clay.
3. Use a piece of thin rubber sheet to
cover the mouth of the jar to serve
as the diaphragm.

NOTE: Read and follow the procedure.
