QUESTION 1: CONSTRUCTION DETAIL AT HEAD OF FRAME

Using a scale 1: 10 draw a vertical section through the top of a casement window
frame built into a 280mm cavity wall. The window opening is supported by TWO
precast pre-stressed concrete lintels with brick force on the FIRST layer of bricks then
at every alternative FORTH layer. The walls are plastered on both sides. The drawing
must include the head and top rail of the frame with part of the glass in position, the
lintels, the brick force and the plaster.

Show SIX layers of bricks above the lintels and FOUR layers of bricks below the lintels.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Wall thickness : 280mm

External lintel : 164mm x 75mm

Internal lintel: 100mm x 75mm

Head of frame : 100mm x 75mm

Top rail : 50mm x 44mm

Plaster : 19mm

QUESTION 2: ROOF WITH PARAPET GUTTER

A church needs to be provided with a fibre cement tiled roof with a parapet gutter. The
roof is supported with a wall plate on the one side and it is supported at the ridge by
means of a laminated ridge beam which runs over the entire length of the room.
Decking boards are fixed on top of the rafters. Bituminous sheet material is laid on top
of the decking boards.
Knotty pine ceiling is fixed to the underside of the rafters. The roof is covered with fibre
cement tiles.

2.1 Using a scale 1 : 10 draw a vertical section though the parapet gutter and the
surrounding detail at the foot of the roof. The drawing must include the detail
of the gutter, the decking boards, the bituminous sheeting, the ceiling, the wall
plate, the wall up to the coping and the roof up to the first THREE battens.

2.2 Using a scale 1 : 10 draw a vertical section through the ridge of the roof. The
drawing must include the construction detail up to TWO battens at the ridge.

Show the ridge beam, the covering with the ridge tiles, the rafters with bolts,
the decking boards, the bituminous sheeting and the ceiling.

QUESTION 3: BRICK WORK

Use a scale of 1 : 10 to draw the TWO alternative plan layers of TWO free standing
piers built in the following bonds:

QUESTION 4: CAVITY AND SOLID WALLS

Using a scale 1 : 10 draw the following vertical sections:

Both superstructures must be provided with a face brick plinth between the plaster and
the natural ground level. The drawing must emphasise on the constructional difference
between the cavity construction and the solid wall construction. The drawing must
include the damp proof layers, foundations, foundation walls, floors, hard core, the face
brick plinths and natural ground levels.

Show EIGHT course of brick work above the floor level.

QUESTION 5: REINFORCE CONCRETE SLAB AND BEAM

The first floor of a building must be provided with a reinforce concrete slab which is
supported at the external walls by means of an end beam (L- shape beam). The beam
carries 220 mm onto the brick wall. Using a scale of 1 : 10 draw a vertical cross section
through the end beam, the concrete slab and the wall.

Show FIVE courses of brickwork above the slab and FIVE courses of brickwork below
the beam.

SPECIFICATIONS

External wall: 220 mm

Slab: 100 mm

End beam: 300 mm deep (measured from the top of the slab) and
220 mm wide

End beam reinforcement: THREE 20 mm diameter tensile bars, TWO 16 mm


diameter compression bars with 8 mm diameter stirrups at
300 mm centres

Slab reinforcement: 12 mm diameter main bars at 200 mm centres with


alternate bars crank up into the top of the slab over the
beam, 6 mm diameter distribution bars at 150 mm centres

Concrete cover: 25 mm

Floor finish: 20 mm cement finish

Plaster: 19 mm to both sides.

QUESTION 6: SHELVING

THREE chipboard shelves must be fixed against a wall. Using a scale 1 : 10 draw a
vertical section through the shelves and the wall to show the method of fixing of the
shelves against the wall.

SPECIFICATIONS

Shelves: 350 mm wide, 22 mm thick and 2 000 mm long

Shelve spacing: 400 mm apart

Bottom shelf: 900 mm from floor
