Course Description

This is an introductory course on the mechanics of particles, rigid bodies, and fluids;
waves; and heat and thermodynamics using the methods and concepts of algebra, geometry,
trigonometry, graphical analysis, and basic calculus.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Gain an overview of the nature of Physics specifically in Newtonian mechanics,

fluid mechanics, waves & optics, gravity and thermodynamics;
2. Solve, using experimental and theoretical approaches, multiconcept, rich-context
problems involving Newtonian mechanics, fluid mechanics, waves & optics,
gravity and thermodynamics;

Introduction

The phenomena of Nature have been found to obey certain physical laws; one of the primary
goals of physics research is to discover those laws. It has been known for several centuries that the
laws of physics are appropriately expressed in the language of mathematics, so physics and
mathematics have enjoyed a close connection for quite a long time. (This is an introduction to
science leading to the definition of physics, its history, branches, prominent thinkers in physics, etc.

3. The world’s largest cut diamond is the First Star of Africa. Its volume is 1.84 cubic inches. What
is its volume in cubic meters? In milliliters?

4. A particle moves along the x axis. Its position varies with time according to the expression x = -
4t + 2t2 where x is in meters and t is in seconds. The position–time graph for this motion is shown
below.

a) Determine the displacement of the particle in the time interval t=1s to t=3s.

b) Calculate the average velocity during that time interval.

c) Find the instantaneous velocity of the particle at t = 2 s.

5. A stone is thrown downward with an initial velocity of 1.68 m/s and it reaches the ground in
just 0.95s.

a) How high is the stone before it was thrown?

b) What is its final velocity upon hitting the ground?

6. A bullet is fired from a gun mounted at an angle of 35°. If the muzzle velocity is 420 m/s,
determine a) the maximum height reached, b) the time of flight, and c) range when the bullet
strikes the ground at the same level.

7. A child is sitting 1.20 m from the center of a merry-go round, which moves with a speed of 1.10
m/s. Calculate the centripetal acceleration of the child.

8. A 1.5 kg hanging plant is supported by two ropes, one rope is horizontal and the other makes an
angle of 60° with the horizontal. What is the tension present on each rope?

9. What force is needed to accelerate a sled (mass =60 kg) at 1.5 m/s2 on horizontal frictionless
ice?
10. A 10.0-kg box is pulled along a horizontal surface by a force of 40.0 N applied at a 30.0° angle
above horizontal. We assume a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.30. Calculate the acceleration

11. A 75.0-kg firefighter climbs a flight of stairs 28.0 m high. How much work does he do?

12. How long will it take a 2750-W motor to lift a 385-kg piano to a sixth-story window 16.0 m
above?

13. What is the magnitude of the momentum of a 28-g sparrow flying with a speed of 7.8 m/s2?

14. Consider a 6-kg fish that swims toward and swallows a 2-kg fish that is at rest. If the larger
fish swims at 1 m/s, what is its velocity immediately after lunch?

15. A 64-kg person riding a bike puts all her weight on each pedal when climbing a hill. The pedals
rotate in a circle of radius 15 cm. (a) What is the maximum torque she exerts? (b) How could she
exert more torque?

16. Calculate the force of Earth’s gravity on a spacecraft 2.50 Earth radii above the Earth’s surface
if its mass is 2350 kg.

17. What is the intensity of a sound at the pain level of 120 dB? Compare it to that of a whisper at
20 dB.

18. A geologist finds that a Moon rock whose mass is 9.28 kg has an apparent mass of 6.18 kg
when submerged in water. Using buoyancy and Archimedes’ Principle, what is the density of the
rock?

19. Super Invar™, an alloy of iron and nickel, is a strong material with a very low coefficient of
thermal expansion (0.20 x10–6 C°). A 1.8-m-long tabletop made of this alloy is used for sensitive
laser measurements where extremely high tolerances are required. How much will this alloy table
expand along its length if the temperature increases 6.0 C°? Compare to tabletops made of steel.

20. What is the specific heat of a metal substance if 135 kJ of heat is needed to raise 4.1 kg of the
metal from 18.0°C to 37.2°C?
DEFINITION OF TERMS

This section contains terms that are relevant in your own understanding of the course. Definition
may be conceptual (i.e. taken from books, dictionary, etc) and presented verbatim if the term, as
used has the same definition as written in the cited source/s. Define a minimum of 20 words.

For example:

Temperature refers to the average or mean kinetic energy of particles in a body.
