Project Overview

Sponsored by the Satilla REMC Foundation

Project summary – give an overview of the project. (50 words)
This year, the Atkinson County Middle School opened on the campus of
Atkinson County High School. Both schools share a media center. Books and
videos are needed in the collection to meet the needs of middle school
students who have different reading abilities, interests, and courses than
high school students.

Value of project – Explain how the project adds value to the educational
process. (100 words)

Purchasing more books for the media center collection will increase the
amount of reading material that is available to the middle school students for
class assignments and pleasure reading. In addition to fiction books, non-
fiction books will be purchased that will supplement the curriculum in areas
such as science, social studies, and math. The purchase of more
educational videos will increase the amount of instructional materials that
can be used to teach middle school students the required Georgia
Performance Standards. Introducing new books and videos to the media
center will also keep the collection current.

Recipients - What portion of the student population will be affected by the

project? In what ways will the project affect the student body? (100 words)

This project is expected to affect every middle school student. The materials
that are purchased will be varied in grade level and subject matter so that all
students at the middle school should have access to books on their reading
level and within their areas of interest and need. The videos to be purchased
will be chosen to address various subject areas at each grade level. As a
result of this project, all students in the middle school should feel confident
that the media center has the materials that they need right there on the
shelves.

Goals – What are the goals and objectives for the students? What do you
plan to achieve with the project? (100 words)

By adding more materials that are appropriate for middle school students, I
expect to see an increase in the number of middle school students who visit
the media center to check out books and conduct research. Middle school
students will experience more satisfaction in the media center when they
have access to materials within their reading abilities and areas of interest.
Middle school students’ academic achievement will improve as a result of
more time spent reading books from the media center and more effective
instruction that is supplemented with high quality videos.

Instructional Experiences - How will current instructional experiences be

enhanced by the project? (100 words)

Because teachers will be asked to suggest materials for purchase, students

will be able to check out books related to topics covered in class. Students
may read to gain additional information about a subject, or books may be
read as an assignment given by a teacher. If more books are added to the
collection, students will have a greater selection of books to read to meet
their reading goals. If students read books that are interesting and relevant,
they will most likely have positive reading experiences and read more in the
future.

Sponsored by the Satilla REMC Foundation

Benefits – What is the immediate and/or ongoing benefit this will provide
students? (100 words)

The books and videos will provide an immediate benefit to students once the
materials are received and added to the media center collection. The new
books will be made available for students to check out and read, and the
videos will be available for teachers to check out and use during instruction.
The materials that are purchased with this grant will be housed in the media
center and maintained as long as they are in good condition. Many classes
of students should be able to enjoy the benefits of this project in the years
ahead.
