Use of Raking Tubes

If it is not possible to anchor into the facade, raking tubes can be used to support a
maximum of 3 lifts. The frequency of the raking tubes should be at least the frequency of the
facade anchors they are replacing.

The raking tubes should

be external to the scaffold,
tied to the scaffold at the
level of the second lift.

Raking Tube: length should

not exceed 6.0m.
The scaffold should be butted
against the facade at the level
of the second lift.
The raking tube should be
at an angle no greater than
2 vertical to 1 horizontal.

The base of the raking tube

should be tied to the base The base of the raking tube
of the scaffold. should be well-founded with a
Baseplate on a Soleboard.
If it is not possible to butt the scaffold at the required level,
the raking tube (or a tube connected to the raking tube) Detail:
should be driven at least 1.25m into the ground. A cross-
tube at approx. 45° to the horizontal should also be driven
1.25m into the ground and connected to the raking tube.

Alternatively, kentledge
can be used.

Introduction

General

The following data sheets are for use with the SPRINT 75 framed facade access scaffold. It is intended that
these sheets (pages 2000 to 2021) will complement the existing datasheets. The rules for use generally
remain the same though some additional rules apply and the notes should be checked carefully when using
the load data on these sheets.

The Safe Working Loads are derived from a 3-D computer model using a finite element stuctural package.
The structures are analysed using a second order (p-delta) elastic analysis and the members checked to the
code requirements of EC3. All the requirements of prEN 12811 “Scaffolds - Performance requirements and
general design” have been adhered to. Allowances for sway inclinations between frames, sway inclinations
between jacks and frames, and bow (out of straightness) imperfections of frames has been accounted for in
the model in accordance with EC3 and prEN 12811.

The model is based on the SPRINT 3m bay.

Factors

Load factor : γf = 1.5 for all loading (dead load, live load, wind load, etc.)

Material factor : γm = 1.1 for all materials.

Materials
Frame verticals : S235 fy = 320N/mm2
Jacks : (Boulton Universal Jack) S275 fy = 374N/mm2

Loads

Windload : Two wind load cases are considered.

1. A “MAXIMUM” wind load case where a dynamic wind pressure of 600N/m2 is applied at
the base of the structure, increasing linearly to 770N/ m2 at 24m height.
2. A “WORKING” wind load case where 200N/ m2 is applied to the whole of the structure.

It should be stressed that the maximum windload applied is 770N/m2. Where the
allowable topload permits higher structures to be built it must be verified by the
designer that the maximum windload to the proposed structure is less than 770N/m2.

Alternatively the following guidelines may be applied for higher windloads;

• For windload above 770N/m2 and below 920 N/m2 the baylength should be reduced
to 2.5m maximum.
• For windload above 920N/m2 and below 1100N/m2 the baylength should be reduced
to 2.0m maximum.
• If the baylength cannot be reduced then the anchor pattern should be doubled to
account for windload upto 1100N/m2 maximum.

In addition the value of Cs(perp) =1.00 has been taken for the end bays to account for higher
local windloads.

Imposed load : Load class 3 (2kN/ m2) is applied to one working level only at the most onerous level. (This
includes 100% loading at the worst level and 50% loading at the adjacent level. The load is
applied to both the main deck and the hop-up brackets (if present)).

Combinations : Both the “In Service” and “Out of Service” conditions have been analysed to determine the
worst condition. The combinations are taken from prEN12811 and are as follows;
In Service : Self weight
100% Class 3 load at most unfavourable deck level
50% Class 3 load at adjacent deck level
Working wind load
Out of Service : Self weight
35% Class 3 load at most unfavourable deck level
Maximum wind load

Parameters used

The model used was three dimensional and incorporated the following parameters;

Horizontal Stiffness: A linear stiffness of 0.025kN/mm (perpendicular)

A linear stiffness of 0.20kN/mm (parallel)

Imperfections: Frame inclination (parallel) = 0.0050

Frame inclination (perpendicular) = 0.0025
Jack inclination = 0.023
Bow imperfection = L/200

Code check: To EC3:Part 1.1 based on second order elastic analysis.

The resistance of the cross sections (in accordance with EC3:Part 1.1) is based on the
plastic resistance.

How to use

General

The data sheets give allowable safe working loads that may be applied to a SPRINT structure for various
situations depending on the tie pattern, wind load conditions and the presence of hop-up brackets.
The load data is expressed as an allowable “Topload” and an allowable “Leg load”.
The “topload” is the SWL applied to a 24m structure ,already containing one working lift of 2kN/m2.
The “leg load” is the load in the base leg of the structure resulting from the “topload”, the self weight of the
24m structure and the imposed load from one working lift of 2kN/m2 to the 24m structure.
The figures make due allowance for the different load distribution from inside leg to outside leg and shows the
ratio of load distribution for each type of structure.

External and Internal Legs

Internal legs are defined as the legs nearest to the facade and the externals are the legs away from the
facade.
The calculations have been made to determine the maximum “Topload” that can be applied to a 24m high
structure. The “Topload” has been applied in a ratio applicable for the self weight of each type of structure.

The ratios used are as follows;

INTERNAL EXTERNAL INTERNAL EXTERNAL

STRUCTURE TYPE LEG LOAD LEG LOAD LEG LOAD LEG LOAD
MAIN DECKS STEEL MAIN DECKS ALU / PLY
Without hop - ups 36% 64% 31% 69%
340 hop - ups every lift 49% 51% 49% 51%
750 cantilever bracket one lift only 36% 64% 36% 64%

The designer should check the ratio of internal to external load for the structure in question and use the
allowable loads given for that situation.

Face bracing (base level) 14.2 0.5 0 0.07
Standard face brace 8 5.5 0 0.43
5.83 5.88 Total = 11.71 kN

Example Calculation 1.

A SPRINT structure is required to the following specification;

Height = 44m
Maximum windload at 44m = 770N/m2
Facing condition = Unsheeted
Facade porosity = Closed
No walkthrough frame is required
One working level only
340 hop - ups to the inside leg only at every level.

Try ;
3m bay structure
alu/ply decks to main frame
steel decks to hop - ups

Note: In this case only one working level is specified (as used in the load tables) therefore only the allowable
topload needs to be investigated.

Height above 24m = 44 - 24 = 20m

Topload above 24m (from Table D above) = 20/24 x 5.83 = 4.9kN to internal leg
= 22/24 x 5.88 = 4.9kN to external leg

© SGB 2003.DOC
SPRINT 75
Date: June ‘99 Page n°:2006

How to use

The load data available gives the following options for this structure;

Page No. Anchor Pattern Topload Topload

internal leg external leg
2010 4m alternative staggered (with full 27kN 27kN
perimeter tied) anchor pattern.
2012 6m alternative staggered (with bottom tied 24kN 25kN
at 2m) anchor pattern.
2014 12m alternative staggered anchor pattern. 5kN 5kN

The 12m alternative staggered anchor pattern gives an allowable topload closest to , yet still greater than the
calculated topload for each leg and is therefore the most efficient anchor pattern.

Example Calculation 2.

A SPRINT structure is required to the following specification;

Height = 30m
Maximum windload at 30m = 770N/m2
Facing condition = Unsheeted
Facade porosity = 60% open
Walkthrough frame is required
Two working levels @ 2kN/m2
Without hop-up brackets

Try ;
3m bay structure
steel decks to main frame

Note: In this case two working levels are specified (different to the load tables which specify one working
level) therefore the additional imposed load should be added to the topload and the topload ratio calculated.

Height above 24m = 30 - 24 = 6m

Topload above 24m (from Table A above) = 6/24 x 3.88 = 1.0kN to internal leg
= 6/24 x 7.09 = 1.8kN to external leg

Topload from additional imposed load = 2 x 0.75 x 3 x 50% = 4.5kN to internal leg
= 4.5kN to external leg

Therefore total toploads are given as follows;

1.0 + 4.5 = 5.5kN to internal leg (45%)
1.8 + 4.5 = 6.3kN to external leg (55%)

© SGB 2003.DOC
SPRINT 75
Date: June ‘99 Page n°:2007

How to use

For this structure the topload ratio (int : ext) is 45% to 55%. Interpolating between the ratios given in the load
data gives the following options for this structure;

Page No. Anchor Pattern Topload Topload

internal leg external leg
2017 4m alternative staggered (with full 5kN 6.5kN
perimeter tied) anchor pattern.
2019 6m alternative staggered (with bottom tied 5kN 6.5kN
at 2m) anchor pattern.
2021 12m alternative staggered anchor pattern. 0kN 0kN

The 6m alternative staggered anchor pattern gives an allowable topload closest to , yet still greater than the
calculated topload for each leg and is therefore the most efficient anchor pattern.

V-Ties : Description
In the absence of ties being fully connected to both standards V-ties are required to give lateral (sideways)
support to the SPRINT structure.This allows all other ties on the structure to be connected to the inside
standard only.

A minimum of two v-ties per ten bays are required for every lift containing ties. For netted structures an
additional rule is required where the top row of ties requires three v-ties per ten bays.
So for example, a 12 bay structure will require (12/10 x 2 = 2.4) 3 v-ties for every lift containing ties.
If netted it will require (12/10 x 3 =3.6) 4 v-ties in the top row of ties.

The terms used to describe the tie forces given in the data sheets are further clarified as follows:

fixing for "max anchor

The v - ties are present to give sideways restraint to the structure. It is possible that this restraint may be
provided by another means , for example a scaffold corner return. In this case an engineering judgement should
be made to check that the scaffold corner return will provide an equivalent restraint to the v - tie. The v - ties
may then be replaced by the scaffold corner return, as shown below;

- If all ties are connected to both standards then v - ties are not required.
- If ties are connected to the inside standard only then two v - ties must be placed in every tied lift per every ten
bays.
- The screw jack used is the boulton universal jack at maximum extension of 489mm.
- Face bracing must be placed at a minimum of one in every five bays.
- Additionally for netted structures:
- The top lift must contain a minimum of three v - ties per every ten bays. -
The jacks should be braced in the direction of the face bracing for extensions greater tham 150mm.

- The intermediate ties must be staggered over alternate standards and equally distributed with a maximum
vertical spacing of 4m.
