1. What is Multimedia?
Multimedia is the area concerned with the computer-controlled integration of
text, graphics, drawings, images, video, animation, audio, and any other media where
every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally.
2. Explain the characteristics of each multimedia type.
a.) Text - is the most common multimedia element. It expresses the information that
developer is trying to get over to their viewers. It is also good idea to grab the
viewers’ attention if ever the picture does not load.
b.) Audio - most of the time, audio files are deployed using plug-in media players. There
are a few audio formats include RealAudio, MIDI, Wave, WMA, and MP3. The
developer will compress the format to reduce the length or duration of time. One can
stream the audio before the file is downloaded.
c.) Video - are seen concerning multimedia elements in the most common place which is
the web. Flash, MPEG, AVI, WMV, and QuickTime are a few digital video formats.
It can increase the speed of the playback when streaming digital videos. To hold on to
the viewers’ attention, developers use videos.
d.) Image - an image catches the viewers’ attention more quickly than text. Almost every
multimedia application holds images. The most common images are JPEGS and
PNGs. And also, Photoshop and Paint.NET creates high tech visual effects which are
common with images.
e.) Animation - draws in the younger crowd. The most common tool for creating these
animations is Adobe Flash. It is the most creative and fun multimedia element.
3. Give at least three (3) application software (either commercial, open source or freeware)
and explain their history and versions released, functionalities and features for the
following:
a) Text Manipulation –
1. Microsoft Word – is one of the most popular and most widely used word processing
applications in the market. Microsoft Word has more than 90% of the word processing
market and more than 450 million users. Microsoft Corporation first released this
program to the market in 1989. Microsoft Word is a part of the Microsoft Office suite of
programs, which include Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Publisher. Word can be used to
format text and build layout documents.

FUNCTIONALITIES:
The main purpose of Word is to create text documents that can be saved electronically, printed
on paper or saved as PDF files.
- Composition and Editing
Microsoft Word allows users to type words, sentences and paragraphs. It allows you to edit your
words after typing them. For example, you can correct spelling, grammar, change words, delete
or add words.
- Formatting and Saving
Microsoft Word have many features that you can use to format your text like boldface type,
italics, underlining, headers and footers, bullets and numbering. The program will also allow you
to save your document electronically to the computer's hard drive.
- Printing
Microsoft Word can also print your document. With Word, you can select printing options, such
as selecting how many copies of the document you want to print or whatever document you want
to be print.
FEATURES:
- Working with Text and Styles
Microsoft Word is designed primarily for text-based documents. These can be business reports,
student papers, informal notes from a call or a lecture, or letters to friends and relatives.
In Microsoft Word, you type text and see roughly how it will appear on someone else's computer
screen or on paper. You can change the font, color, size and other style settings for text using
Word's built-in options. To style multiple sections of text the same way, such as to consistently
style headings in a certain way, you can create styles that group multiple formatting options into
one setting.
- Saving and Printing
After creating a document in Microsoft Word, you usually want to save it for later access, send
to someone, print it out, or any combination of these uses. With Word, you can save a document
in a variety of formats for compatibility with other software. You can save the document locally
on your computer or, if you're using a recent version, to a Microsoft-supported cloud system so
you and others can access it remotely. You can also print documents using most modern printers,
adjusting settings such as whether to print in color or black and white, whether to print on both
sides of the paper and what size and shape of paper you want to use.
- Word and Compatibility
Microsoft Word has been designed for years to maximize compatibility between versions.
Typically, versions of Microsoft Word can open files created in previous versions of the software
and save files in formats usable by earlier versions. You can also save files in formats such as

Rich Text Format, which is used by a variety of competing products. Many other word
processing programs can open files created in Microsoft Word. If you take advantage of newer
features in a document, you may not be able to fully rely on them when you open the document
in another program, including an earlier version of Word.
- Cloud and Local Support
Microsoft Word offers a local version of the software that you can access on your computer and
a version you can access through your web browser. In the past, Word was only available as a
program you install locally on your computer.
With either version of Word in Office 365 or Microsoft Office 2016, you can save files locally or
to a Microsoft-hosted cloud system where they can be accessed from any location.
- Built-in Collaboration
Modern versions of Microsoft Word allow multiple people to edit the same document. This is an
improvement on previous editions and some competing products, which require people to edit
documents one at a time and email or otherwise share changed versions for review and further
editing. In older versions of Word, collaboration tools are limited.
2. WordPerfect - is a word processing application from Corel Corp. WordPerfect was

popular in the early 1990s. It is best for writing simple essays and articles. Though it isn't used as
much today, WordPerfect is compatible with Microsoft Word, meaning that you can open and
edit WordPerfect files in the Word program, then save them as WordPerfect files
again. WordPerfect also can be used for formatting and laying out documents.

WordPerfect uses the file extension .wpd. The program was recognized for three major
characteristics:

The streaming code architecture parallels the formatting features of HTML and cascading style
sheets. The documents are created in the same way as HTML pages are written. The text is
interspersed by codes that handle data until a closing tag is encountered. Tags can be nested, and
a few data structures within the stream are also treated as objects. The data and formatting codes
of a WordPerfect document appear as a single continuous stream.
The reveal-code editing screen can be toggled open and closed at the bottom of the main editing
screen. Texts are presented interspersed with codes, while objects are represented by named
tokens.
WordPerfect with DOS was well known for its "Alt" keystroke facility, which was expanded by
adding macro libraries. This allowed any sequence of keystrokes to be recorded, edited and
saved. The macros were capable of making decisions, examining system data, chaining and
operating recursively until a stop condition was encountered.

3. Lotus Word Pro - if you are using Lotus Notes or Lotus 1-2-3--common in corporate
environments--Lotus Word Pro is an ideal program for word processing needs. This
program works in concert with Lotus applications to allow us to create and distribute
formatted text documents. It is produced and distributed by IBM Corp. Lotus Word Pro is
also compatible with Microsoft Word and ideal for writing reports, memos and proposals.

Known issues
 IBM states that Smartsuite and therefore Word Pro will not install and work on 64-
bit Microsoft Windows operating systems, this is only half true, the use of 16-bit installer
code means that the installer and some auxiliary programs supplied with the Lotus/IBM
Smartsuite will not install or run. However the bulk of the Smartsuite is actually 32-bit code
and will install and work on 64-bit systems if you get hold of a relatively recent IBM
branded version which uses a 32-bit installer.

FUNCTIONALITIES:
Lotus Notes is used with a variety of local and collaborative server applications, including email,
calendars, personal information managers (PIM) and the Web.
FEATURES:
The Word Pro desktop consists in context-sensitive menus. This means that commands change as
the user works on different types of documents. For instance, if the “Create” command is used to
make a table, the menu bar shows a Table menu for working with tables. A “Modeless Bar” is
available for doing tasks like inserting index entries, checking the spelling, or merging a
document. The bar consists of the same components that make up a dialog box: text boxes,
command buttons, and text boxes.
Several other features make the program an efficient word processor. Moving text can be done
more directly than cutting and pasting. Word Pro provides a special hand “icon” for performing
this. There is a SmartFill module that allows for speeding up data entry in documents and tables.
It automatically fills in routine information like times, dates, or sequential numbers. The Fast
Format function quickly duplicates a format as the user selects text with the format he wants to
use.

1. iMOVIE - iMovie is a video editing software application sold by Apple Inc. for the
Mac and iOS (iPhone, iPad, and iPad Mini). It was originally released in 1999. Starting in
2003, iMovie is included free with all new Mac computers. iMovie imports video footage
to the Mac. From there, iMovie allows the user to edit photo and video clips. Users can
add titles, themes, music, and effects. iMovie allows the average person to create
professional quality videos at home or work.

Movie Maker was officially discontinued on January 10, 2017 and it is replaced by Video
Editor (formerly Microsoft Story Remix) which is built in with Microsoft Photos in Windows 10.
VERSION RELEASED:
The first release of Windows Movie Maker was included with Windows Me on September 14,
2000.
Version 1.1 was included in Windows XP a year later, and included support for creating DV
AVI and WMV 8 files. Version 2.0 was released as a free update in November 2002, and added
a number of new features. Version 2.1, a minor update, is included in Windows XP Service Pack
2. The Movie Maker in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 had more transitions and

3. Final Cut Pro - is a series of non-linear video editing software programs first
developed by Macromedia Inc. and later Apple Inc. The most recent version, Final Cut Pro X

2. Adobe Lightroom - (officially Adobe Photoshop Lightroom) is a family of image
organization and image manipulation software developed by Adobe
Systems for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and tvOS (Apple TV). It allows importing/saving,

When you’re working on a photo in the Develop module all the adjustments are laid out
logically, so you can efficiently move through a lot of adjustments on one image.
4. Easily transfer adjustment settings from one image to another
If you’ve spent some time adjusting one image and the next image is similar you can transfer the
settings from the original image with a single click! Just click the “Previous” button in the
Develop module and it’s done. This one feature alone allows you to cruise through groups of
images effortlessly. You can also copy settings to multiple images at once for extra power.
5. Non-destructive editing protects your originals
You never have to worry that you’re damaging the original file. When you make adjustments to
an image Lightroom basically creates a set of instructions. They’re stored in the catalog file, and
show how the image should be saved on export. These instructions can be automatically
embedded in DNG files. With RAW, JPEG and TIFF images an XMP sidecar file can be created
that stores those instructions right beside the original image.
Long story short, Lightroom protects your original files. You can edit fearlessly, knowing you
can always go back to a perfect quality original.
6. Powerful RAW file editor
Lightroom is a fantastic RAW file editor. The RAW format is the highest quality setting on most
dSLR cameras, and with Lightroom you can really take advantage of that.
When shooting in the RAW format it’s easy to correct exposure and white balance in
Lightroom. When shooting in the JPEG format, exposure and white balance can be difficult to
adjust, especially without loss of quality.
Because of the high quality of RAW files, you’re also able to perform adjustments like
conversion to black and white, adding custom colour toning effects, and fine tuning brightness
and contrast with little resulting loss of quality.
7. Easy to crop images
With Lightroom’s Crop tool it’s super easy to creatively crop photos to any aspect
ratio. Straightening your photos is also a snap with the straighten tool. You can click and drag
along any vertical or horizontal line and your image will automatically be rotated and cropped.
It seems like such a simple thing, but you’ll find that you use the straighten tool a LOT.

6.) Debian - also known as Debian GNU/Linux, is a Linux distribution composed of free
and open-source software, developed by the community-supported Debian Project, which
was established by Ian Murdock on August 16, 1993. The first version, Debian 0.01, was
released on September 15, 1993,[6] and the first stable version, 1.1, was released on June
17, 1996.[7] The Debian Stable branch is the most popular edition for personal
computers and servers, and is the basis for many other distributions.

7.) Mandriva - Mandriva was first made public by a French software
company MandrakeSoft. Its first release was based on Red Hat Linux 5.1 and was
released in July 1998. Mandriva Linux was originated by Gaël Duval, and intended to

8.) Sabayon/Gentoo - is a Gentoo-based Italian Linux distribution created by Fabio

Erculiani and the Sabayon development team. Sabayon follows the "out of the box"
philosophy, aiming to give the user a wide number of applications ready to use and a self-
configured operating system.
Sabayon Linux features a rolling release cycle, its own software repository and a package
management system called Entropy. Sabayon is available in both x86 and AMD64 distributions
and there is support for ARMv7 in development for the BeagleBone.
It is named after an Italian dessert, zabaione, which is made from eggs. Sabayon's logo is an
impression of a chicken foot.

of Vector Linux.
