What is plastic –

A material that contains one or more organic polymers of large molecular weight, solid in its finished state
and at some state while manufacturing or processing into finished articles, can be shaped by its flow.

What is plastic roads-

The PlasticRoad is a road made of recycled plastic. It is prefabricated and features a hollow space
that can be used for various purposes. These are found to perform better compared to those constructed
with conventional bitumen.

Concept-

Ever thought why does roads have huge cracks or holes formed after maybe six months of its creation?
Its because of India’s heavy monsoon seasons.

This is where plastic roads come into play

The basic idea behind this whole process is that if can use the water repellant property of plastics the
roads can last up to six or seven years.

Materials-

1.AGGREGATE::

(a) 10 mm of filler material

(b) filler is stone dust & lime

2.BITUMEN::

(a) 60/70, 80/100 grade bitumen.

3.WASTE PLASTIC::

(a) plastic waste in shredded form(pvc is not used)

Construction process-

Field trials-

There are two type of field trials

Dry process-

1. The aggregate is heated to 170°C in the Mini hot Mix Plant .

2. the shredded plastic waste is added in equal proportion.

3. The mixture is transferred to the road and the road is laid.

Wet process-
1. Waste plastics by direct mixing with hot bitumen at 160°C.
2. Mechanical stirrer is needed
3. Addition of stabilizers and proper cooling.
4. Since the wet process require a lot of investment and bigger plants
5. Not commonly used..

Comparison-

ADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC ROADS

Better resistance towards rain water and water stagnation

Reduction in pores in aggregate, thus less cracks for water to seep in.

Cost of construction of roads decreased by Rs5000 per km

Ultimate advantage is that disposal of plastic waste will not be a problem

BENEFITES OF WASTE PLASTIC ROAD

ENVIRONMENT BENEFITS

MSWM ( Municipal Solid Waste Management )

Employment Generation

Farming community

National economy

DISADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC ROAD

1. Cleaning process -: Toxics present in the co-mingled plastic waste would start leaching.

2. During the road laying process -: In the presence of chlorine will definitely release noxious HCL gas.
3. After the road laying -: It is opined that first rain will trigger leaching. As the plastics will merely form a
sticky layer , (mechanical abrasion). The components of the road, once it has been laid, are not inert.

CASE STUDY::AHMED KHAN - A plastic sack manufacturer,Ahmed khan realized that plastic waste was a
great problem.His company manufactured polyblend which when used with bitumen enhanced its
properties. He along with RV college of eng. Bangalore laid 40kms of water repelling road in Bangalore.
