 Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer
Today, computers are used in every field and have made our day to day tasks very easy. They
have become a part of our life. Without computers our life would be none. But use of computers
have some advantages and disadvantages.

List of advantages of computer

 It enhances communication and availability of information
Networking, especially with full access to the web, allows ways of communication that would
simply be possible before it was developed, instant messaging can now allow user to talk in real
time and send files to other people wherever they are in the world. Also it allows access to
huge amount of useful information, including traditional reference materials and timely facts,
such as news and current events.

 It allows for more convenient resource sharing

This benefit is very important particularly for large companies that really need to produce huge
numbers of useful resources to be shared with all the people. Since the technology involves
computer- based work, it is assured that the resources they wanted to get across would be
completely shared by connecting to a computer network which their audience is also using.

 It makes the file sharing easier

Computer networking allows easier accessibility for people to share their file, which greatly
helps them with saving more time and effort. Since they could do file sharing more accordingly
and effectively.

 It is highly flexible
This technology is known to be very flexible as it gives users the opportunity to explore
everything about essential things, such as software without affecting their functionality. Plus,
People will have the accessibility to all information they need to get and share.

 A great educational tool

Computers can be used as a great educational tool. Students can have access to all sorts of
information on the internet. Some great websites like Wikipedia, khan’s academy, code
academy, byte-notes provides free resources for students and professionals.

 A great storage tool

A huge number of data can be stored and saved in minutes by the help of computers. Many
organizations are using computers for keeping record of customers, banks are using computers
for maintaining accounts and managing financial transactions of computers while schools,
colleges and universities are using computers for keeping record of the students result.

 A source of entertainment
Nowadays in this modern world, computers are a big source of entertainment for People.
People can watch movies, news or listen to music at any time and at any place.
One big advantage of computers in field of entertainment is that on televisions people have to
wait to watch a specific program or news. They can skip any news and are unable to watch a
specific TV program or news at any time. But by the help of computers people can watch any
news or program of their choice at any time via internet.

 It increases cost efficiency

With computer networking, you can use a lot of software products available on the market
which can just be stored or installed in your system or server, and can then be used by various
workstations.

List of Disadvantages of computer

 It lacks independence
Computers involves a process that is operated using computers, so people will be relying more
of computer work, instead of exerting an effort for their tasks at hand. Aside from this they will
be dependent on the main file server which means if it breaks down, the system would become
useless making users idle.

 Possesses security difficulties

Because there would be a huge number of people who would be using a computer network to
get and share some of their files and resources, a certain user’s security would be always at risk.
There might even be illegal activities that would occur which we need to be careful and be
aware of.

 Unemployment
Different tasks are performed automatically by using computers. It reduces the need of people
and increases unemployment in the society.

 Wastage of time and energy

Many people use computers without positive purpose. They play games and chat for long
period of time. It causes wastage of time and energy. Young generation is now spending more
time on social media like Facebook, Twitter etc. or texting their friends all night which is bad for
their studies and for health. And it also has adverse effects on social life.
  Computer crimes
People use computer for negative activities. They hack the credit card numbers of people and
misuse them. Dacoits hack security system of banks for purpose of robbery.
And also they steal important data from big organizations.

 Privacy violation
The computers are used to store personal data of the people. The privacy of person can be
violated if the personal and confidential records are not protected properly.

 Health risks
The improper and prolonged use of computers can results in injuries or disorders hands, wrists,
elbows, eyes, necks and back. The users can avoid health risks by using the computer in proper
positions. They must also take regular breaks while using the computer for longer period of
time. It is recommended to take a couple of minute’s break of 30 minutes of computer usage.

 Impact on environment
The computer manufacturing processes and computer waste are polluting the environment.
The wasted part of computer can release dangerous toxic materials. Green computer is a
method to reduce the electricity consumed and environmental waste generated when using a
computer. It includes recycling and regulating manufacturing processes. The used computers
must be donated or disposed of properly.
