 Aim
 To join a force of small scale fisheries, who can
not achieve any substantial (large) result alone.
 In order to improve the economic and social
condition on the members, by carrying out one
or more business activities.

 Although the fundamental principles of co-
operatives regarding their organisation and
functions are the same for any type of co-
operatives.
 The range of activities and kinds of
undertaking in fisheries they cover one or
more of the following
 Ownership and operation of fishing vessels.

 Provision of credit for fisherman and
encouragement of thrift (Economy).
 Marketing of fish.
 Warehousing and cold storage for fishes and
their products.
 Transport of fish their product to market and
processing plants.
 Fish processing.

 Supply of fishing materials like nets, accessory
parts nets and fishing craft.
 Maintenance and repair of fishing crafts and
equipments.
 Manufacturing of fishing material suck as nets,
accessory parts, and fishing craft materials.
 Technical service such as seaworthy information.

 Insurance of fishing vessels and equipments.
 Control of fishery rights such EEZ.
 Insurance of fisherman.

 Fishermen’s co-operative should meet the needs of
fishermen.
 To eliminate the monopolistic dominated by traders
and middlemen prevailing in the fisheries economy.
 It also look after by giving advancing fishermen’s
working capital before fishing seasons started.
 Supplying fishing gear and other requisites.
 Hence the cooperative must dealing multipurpose
activities for the betterment of fishermen.

 Government also involved in the betterment of
economic and social welfare of fishermen.
 Members of fishermen’s cooperatives should have
common interests.
 The initiatives should come from the fishermen
themselves, although government support is necessary.
 Obious need for the understanding and support of the
members, to overcome the opposition from merchants
and middlemen with strong economic cooperation.

 Some government assistance are necessary,
particularly in the initial stages, and special
attention is required to educate fishermen in
principles of cooperation.
 Cooperatives should be viable as business
organisations and require efficient management.
 Although cooperative are not profit making
organisation in the sense of commercial
companies.

 Hence, cooperatives have to survive competition with
commercial companies, merchants and middlemen.
 For this there is a need for adequate amount of capital
and sufficient scale of business operation.
 In order to obtain necessary scale for business
operation, merger of small scale cooperatives and
formation of federations on regional and national level
should be considered for improving of fishermen’s
economy.
