PS2 Goals

1. Engage students in lessons

2. Improve classroom management

SMART

Specific:

1. Since the 30-2 class is split with calculus I am finding it challenging to engage the
students in the lesson. I want the students to be more a part of the lesson. The
students can listen to me and take notes but I could keep their interest more if they had
to engage with the content more.
2. I want to have a greater teacher presence in the classroom (especially for the older
students, grade 12s). I don’t like to be strict or yell so I want to find some better
classroom management strategies that will allow me to have greater control over the
classroom while creating an environment of mutual respect. I want my students to
respect me while I’m teaching but more importantly I want them to respect their
classmates to learn.
Measurable:
1. Throughout my practicum I would really like to learn from my TAs about engaging
students in math lessons. Especially the 30-2 classroom set up. I was to learn all the
names by week two or at least get my students name tags so I can try to engage each
student instead of having one or two students answering all the questions.
2. I would like to learn a new classroom management strategy each week and reflect on
how they work in the classroom and for the different grades.
Achievable:
1. I am going to accomplish this goal by first learning the students' names so I can involve
them in the lesson. I will also accomplish this by having my students show me that they
are participating in the lesson throughout my practicum. I will learn names by talking
with students or name tags.
2. I will accomplish this goal by communicating with my TAs about what classroom
management strategies work and seek advice and ideas from them.
Relevant:
1. Since this is my first time working with older students, I am having a difficult time
engaging them creatively. I want my students to take as much as they can from my
lessons and by having them engaged and participating in the lessons I can see their
growth and their involvement.
2. I want my students to have a positive learning environment and if I can learn better
classroom management strategies I can make sure my students are on task and that
each student is able to learn with minimal distractions and feel comfortable growing as
learners. I want a classroom positive environment based off mutual respect and to get
this I need to learn better classroom management strategies while getting to know my
students.
Time Bound
 Both of these goals are going to be with me for my entire teaching career. I will always
be looking for new and better ways to engage my students and since every class is
different this may look different each year. I will always be learning better classroom
management because again, I will have new students each year and this will change
each year. I will bring what I learn into each year and strengthen it as I progress in my
career.
