FILM FESTIVALS IN
INDONESIA
E
very year in Indonesia, film festivals are held in
many parts of the nation. These film festivals
range from school level to the ones with interna-
tional outreach. Each festival has their characters and
themes. Some festivals focus on short films, documen-
taries, feature length films, or mixture of all of them.
Indonesian government, through Ministry of Educa-
tion and Culture, annually holds national film festivals
and awards that give appreciation towards selected fea-
ture length films, documentaries and short films. They
are Festival Film Indonesia (FFI), held since 1955, and
Apresiasi Film Indonesia (AFI, Indonesian Film Apprecia-
tion), held since 2012.
Since its inception, FFI is established as a bench-
mark to measure development and aesthetic value of
Indonesian film in a year. Meanwhile, AFI gives re-
wards to Indonesian films with strong cultural values,
local wisdom, and content that supports the nation’s
character development. AFI is different from FFI in its
awarding system, whereby AFI does not give award on
purely technical aspect of a film, but it gives awards to
film communities, film education institutions, local gov-
ernments with strong support on film establishment,
media with good coverage on Indonesian film, and
other stakeholders that provide great assistance to the
development of Indonesian film in general.
In 1999, Shanty Harmayn and Natacha Devillers
established Jakarta International Film Festival (JIFFest).
At that time, Indonesia did not have an international
film festival, unlike its neighboring countries: Singapore
with Singapore International Film Festival which, at
3
that time, had been running for 12 years, Thailand with
Bangkok International Film Festival launched in Septem-
ber 1998, and Philippines with Cinemanila launched in
July 1999.
Held every year, JIFFest caught the attention of
Asian and international film industries very quickly.
However, since 2011, JIFFest was no longer held due to
the lack of funding support.
At the moment, Indonesia has several international
film festivals held every year. In Indonesian Pavilion
Cinema this year, we would like to invite filmmakers
and film industry members to submit their films to two
of our international film festivals. First is Jogja-NET-
PAC Asian Film Festival in Yogyakarta, founded by the
world’s renowned director Garin Nugroho in 2006. The
other festival is Minikino International Film Festival in
Denpasar Bali, organized by Edo Wulia and one of the
world’s leading artists in video art, Tintin Wulia.

MINIKINO FILM WEEK
International Short Film Festival
ABOUT MINIKINO
Minikino is a short film organization, focusing its
activities on building network at local, national, regional
and international level. In 2002, Minikino became the
first organization in Indonesia to declare its focus on
short films.
Organizing the All Year Round Short Film Festival;
Minikino Monthly Screening and Discussion has since
provided filmmakers with an opportunity to make an
impact to a wider audience. Minikino also works with
film festivals both in and out of Indonesia by designing
special programs of international or Indonesian short
films, providing their audience with an opportunity to
see and discuss about films they might never get to see
otherwise.
At the same time, Minikino believes that culture
can only exist and develop with exchange, not isolation.
Through Minikino’s monthly screening and discussion,
Minikino promotes exchange and networking amongst
filmmakers and the audience. A short film, like a poem
or short story, is a self-contained work with its own
