Guidelines for Project Work - MBA Program

Please Note:
1) Project work is compulsory for MBA students.
2) The topic chosen for Project Work must be based on elective subjects; otherwise, the
proposal will be summarily rejected.
3) After selection of relevant topic, a proposal must be submitted to the university.
4) Proposal must be submitted in the prescribed Proforma. (see accompanying Proforma)
5) Students can start on Project Work only after the proposal has been accepted by the
University.
6) Bio data of the guide must be attached to the Project Work in the prescribed format. (See
accompanying Proforma)
7) A certificate of originality must be provided by the student in the prescribed format; this
must be attached to the project work. (See accompanying Proforma)
8) Students must make a payment of Rs 1000/- towards Project Work before uploading the
proposal.
How to Proceed with the Project Work
The Project Work should be taken up after clearing Module II. Students should register for Project
Work (which is a Module IV subject) after clearing Module II. Students must ensure that the
Proposal is accepted before appearing for the last exam of Module III. (See the chart below)
Once the Proposal is accepted, students can take up work on preparation of Project Report and
ensure submission of the same to the University before appearing for the subjects of Module IV.
This is to ensure that there is no delay in result declaration and subsequent issue of certificates.
Guidelines for completing Project Work
Introduction
The Project Work provides an ideal opportunity to students in integrating all the concepts
assimilated during the course of MBA program and applying these concepts and skills to a real
problem at work.
Objectives
The main objectives of Project Work are as follows:
i. To provide an opportunity to draw together and integrate the knowledge gained and the
skills developed from the MBA Program.
ii. To provide an opportunity for independent study and to develop an ability to organize work
within a given situation with a view to achieve a specific goal.
iii. To develop skills in business strategy, operations or in similar integrated activities
appropriate and relevant to an organization and individual development needs and goals.
iv. To develop intellectual reasoning and justification necessary for decision-making.

PROJECT PROPOSAL (also called as SYNOPSIS)


Proposal Formulation
Proposal of the project should be prepared in consultation with the guide. The proposal must be sent
in the Proforma provided in University website and the soft copy should be uploaded to ICFAI
University.
Choice of topic
Any of the following may be used as topic/basis for your Project Work:
 A practice/process at your workplace that is significant for your work.
 A problem that is faced at workplace and your suggested solution(s).
 Any strategy/technique/technology that you have observed at your/any workplace or
marketplace.
 An area of interest that you have studied.
 An area that is covered in any of the elective subjects.
Contents of the Proposal (See accompanying Proforma)
The Proposal of the proposed Project should essentially have the outline or brief description of
following:
i) Introduction, brief background and Rationale of the topic chosen for the project.
ii) Statement of the problem.
iii) Objectives. (expected and/or measurable)
iv) Methodology.
Each of the above can be discussed in 4-5 sentences to bring out the central idea of the project.
Additionally, proposal must also include a brief description of expected findings of the study. Any
other relevant detail which will help better appreciation and understanding of the project proposal
may also be added to the proposal.
Proposals incomplete in any respect will not be accepted. Acceptance/rejection of proposal will be
communicated to the student within 15 days of receipt of proposal. Modifications regarding rejected
proposals will be suggested wherever necessary, which need to be taken into consideration by the
student before re-submitting the proposal.
Students can commence work on their Project Report only after the proposal is approved by the
university and the same is communicated to them.
The Project Report
Project Report can be successfully completed using the following 5 steps:

Step 1: Locating and Defining Issues or Problems

In the first step, students should locate and define an issue/problem, keeping in mind the purpose
of the study, the relevant background information and decision-making involved to find a
solution. This can involve
1. Developing a case around the workplace issues covering single
organization/multifunctional area problem.
2. Inter-organizational study aimed at inter-organizational comparison/validation of theory/
survey of management practices.
3. Comparison of practices/innovations in relation to different companies/corporates
belonging to the same industry/genre.
Students are advised to take the guidance of Project Guide to finalize the topic.
Who can be the Guide for the Project Work?
Senior Executives, managers, entrepreneurs or teachers with relevant experience and
qualifications in the area of specialization of the chosen topic or allied fields.
Step 2: Designing the Project Report
In this step, the student should focus on overall approach to be used for solving the identified
problem. The approach must detail the procedures necessary for obtaining the required
information, determine possible answers to the relevant questions/issues, and provide the
information needed for decision making.
Step 3: Collecting Data
This step revolves around obtaining the information that is necessary to solve the issue or
problem identified. The required data may be collected through website search/referencing from
print media/field study/interviews/personal observations/questionnaires.
Step 4: Interpreting Data/observations noted in Step 3
This step focuses on examining the data and coming up with a conclusion that solves the
problem.
Step 5: Report Findings
The final step is to present the problem, the data, findings and conclusions in a suitable format.
Methodology
Methodology used in the project may comprise of some or all of the following:
 Nature and source of data/information to be collected.
 Sample and sampling technique.
 Rationale of chosen organization and the sample.
 Tools and Techniques to be used for data collection - details of the tools/questionnaire
to be used and its relevance with the objectives of the project.
 Method/s to be used for data collection.
 Data handling and analysis- organization and analysis of data.
 Statistical tools to be used for analysis.
 Relevance of statistical tools with the objectives of the project.
Project Report Formulation
The Report may be prepared using 15,000-20,000 words (excluding appendices and exhibits). It
should be typed in MS Word, Times New Roman 12 point font. Overall size of the report should be
around 1 MB.
The Project Report must have the following:
 Cover Page – must have the name and enrolment no. of the student and the name of the guide,
along with the title of the Project.
 Detailed table of contents with page nos.
 All pages of the Project Report must be numbered as reflected in the table of contents.
 Bio-data of the guide. (See accompanying Proforma)
 Certificate of originality- duly signed by the student and the guide with dates. (See
accompanying Proforma)
 Introduction to the Project and Review of Literature.
 Rationale.
 Statement of problem.
 Objectives of the Project.
 Scope of the study.
 Nature and Source of data/information.
 Sample and Sampling method with rationale.
 Details of the tools.
 The Questionnaire and other methods used and their purpose.
 Reliability and Validity of the tools used.
 Administration of tools and techniques.
 Data collection.
 Data Handling, Statistical tools used for Data Analysis.
 Data Interpretation and Findings.
 Recommendations.
 Summary and Conclusion.
 Limitations of the Project.
 Direction for further study, if any.
 Reference/Bibliography .
 Annexures /Appendices. (Questionnaire used etc.)
Submission of Project Report
Only soft copy of the project report is to be uploaded to the University website. No further
communication will be provided to the student regarding acceptance of the Project Report. If the
Project Report is found incomplete in any aspect, the same will be communicated to the student.
Upon receipt of such communication, the student is required to make changes accordingly and
reload the Report.
